@soupcanprotestor I don't want you to think I'm against your point of view - I just think that reviewing folk music in it's pure form would do more good. You can experiment when you "understand" the essence. Józef Sikorski, a Polish music theoretist from 19th century, said - "Biedacy! Biorą formuły myśląc, że ducha schwycili!" commenting composers who use folk melodies transcribtions from Oskar Kolberg's works without understand what folk music Poland is. Many modern neofolk bands do this.

@soupcanprotestor That's why I asked this question - because do we say ludowe, Volk, folk it doesn't really mean anything. Going this way we can argue do Metallica play folk music or not - modern and diffrent in all ways but still in the definition. But this is too abstract to think about such claim seriously.

Thanks to communist's cultural politics most of Poles are ashamed in some way of their musical heritage. We tend to "cover" the pure form with articical sweeteners to make it more edible.

@soupcanprotestor You may also want to check Wszystkie mazurki świata festival and Nowa Tradycja. They gather musicians both from the traditional and modern stream of Polish folk. It's hard to speak about music of country I was born in and remain objective :)

"it is a modern folk song" - what folk song is? Song of people from rural areas? Song played by nonprofessional musicians for enjoyment only? Song created by need of hearth rather than as a sophisticated act of hight art creation?

@soupcanprotestor Are plastic flowers flowers? They play folk as it's understand by "world music", not folk as it was performed by traditional musicians. Probably music like this was never played. If you want to listen bands that are really the continuation of Polish folk in it's pure form listen to Kapela Brodów, Janusz Prusinowski Trio, etc. The recordings of theirs sound as you would hear it live. I don't want to deny WVB music - it's just more mainstream and clean than pure folk.

Nigdy nie lubilam polskiej muzyki ludowej. Dopiero ten zespol uswiadomil mi w jakim bledzie bylam. Wspaniale graja.

Folk - folkloryzm - dwa różne pojęcia. WVB prezentuje muzykę jak najbardziej miejską - wychuchaną i oczyszczoną ze wszystkich naleciałości jakie rażą ucho wychowanego na studyjnych nagraniach mieszczucha. Co zostaje tutaj z ludowości? Melodie, nuty - ale ze ludowym pochodzeniem wiąże je tyle co techno z barokowym menuetem.

Co nie znaczy, że nie jest to fajna muzyka.

Bo prawdę mówiąc przyjemniej się tego słucha niż hałaśliwych wiejskich grajków.
