  • The shift linkage controls the detent that is attached to the shift drum that moves the shift forks that moves the slider gears which are splined on to the countershaft and mainshaft that in turn engage or disengage the freewheeling gears and the fixed gears. That is how a constant mesh transmission works.

  • i have honda 70 cc how can i drive it at 100 cc?

  • how do i adjust the rev on my honda c50? it has a high rev in neutral

  • thanks for posting the vid i have a spare gearbox i found at the dump but wasnt sure what i was looking at i have a much better understanding now thank you

  • This video is absolutely amazing. I have had a Z50A, XR70, XR200 and XR500 (not all 3 speeds obviously) and I have never really known for sure what kind of magic was happening in there. Thank you for putting the time into explaining these awesome transmissions! (Even if it was 3 years ago!)

  • what are your qualifications sir!? Also you were pretty clumsy in this vid...

  • Hello,

I have a 1997 Honda Z50R. It has the three up three speed transmission. But just recently first get makes a really loud clicking sound. But only third gear. I'm just curious as to what that is and am wondering if you would happen to have any idea to what it is? I'm assuming a tooth is broken or damaged? I was also wondering how much you think just the replacement part would cost?

If you could help me that would be great. Thank you very much!!

  • Don`t move the camera! I can`t see

  • Don`t the Ican see!

  • i love bikes, but my 5th gear just dropped out of my bottom!

  • sorry if this right place to ask.. I got problem with my Yamaha bike 4 strokes.. once i double stand ( rear tire lifted).. the type spin when on 1st gear...but when rear tires on ground..it suddenly stop...i need to press down shift gear to make sure it move before fully release it.. ( sorry for my poor english)

  • so i have a 110cc pit bike it has 4 speeds all down so when im in 4 which i all the way down i can shift down one more gear and b back in neutral without having to go all the way back up the gears so is my transmission am rotary shift?

  • Its weird a also have a Honda Dax but I need to pull the thingy to shift up and push to shift down, is this normal?

Sorry if it is a noobie question.

  • wow that was really cool. how come they work without synchros?

  • This is a good learning video.

  • i learnt 2 things from this.first thing, If i had a transmission like this i could rapidly change gears without clutching and do no damage to gears. secondly, the guy in this video is very clumsy.

  • when my motors in neutral and im rolling the wheel, it clicks as if its catching first gear just slightly. the wheel breaks through the catch but it cant be good. I cant figure out the source...

  • I just purchased a 2004 CRF 50 that is stuck in what seems to be Neutral. The bike runs fine ,but will not go into any gear. What do you think the prob is???? any help would be appreciated !!!

  • Very nice video. i used this to explain to my gf how a tranny works. very thankful

  • the vid is informative but i want to punch u in the fucking face. get to the point a little faster

  • lol, you need to learn from barney if your attention span is that small

  • well if barney got to the fuckin point a little quicker than this guy id be happy.

  • what point were you looking for? this was well explained from the shift detent to the shift pawl to the dogs and fork and the drum and linkage. he was thorough and explained it well for the video being 8 minutes long.

  • very helpful the alex man videos but do you know to set the timing and cam timing on a baja sc150 gy6 scooter because i need to know how to set the cam and the valve timing i have no idea how to i got it before but forgot how to get it back to it. so can you please help me by responding back to this post thanks alot.

  • well think the guy that invented the gearbox just think how he thought :o he must been a hell of a smart ass :D

  • By now you must have probably found yourself a nice admission into an Engineering program in a University. It's kids like you that the Big 3 should be looking out for to someday hopefully bring the American car industry back to its feet again. Unless you opt for the aerospace industry. Keep up your good fortune and stay off of drugs! :)

  • Nice video. How the gears move to engage the dogs on alternating shafts is really hard to visualize just by looking at the shaft assembly diagrams. Thanks for showing this in action!

  • ok i took apart the bottom end, didn't split it but jus took off the clutch and all to get to the shifting lever and star and came across the what you called "detent arm", the spring loaded arm with the wheel, was snaped in half. i have been trying to look for the part everywhere online and cant find a thing, if you have a part number and probably an estimate on how much it will cost i would be greatly thankfull.

  • ok i have a honda z50rp idk if this video pertains to but heres whats going wrong, i think my bike is stuck in 3 gear because when i press down on it, it stops and clicks jus like in the video but when i try to put it in 2, 1, or even neutral its not shifting. its like its not catching and shifting down.

oh and dont you have to be in neutral to even start it?

  • The basic principle is the same. Check that the detent arm (spring loaded lever with the wheel that rides the star) is in place and not cranked. You might have really worn shift pins also but not likely. Yes you can start in gear but since the kickstart goes through the transmission, it will move. It will only move while you are kicking though, once it starts, the centrifugal clutch will keep it from moving.

  • @tshaulis, fuck you.

  • Just like the engines of the 60's except back then, the shift drum was one piece. The shift forks used to wear out pretty often. When you split the cases you had to lift the ratchet away from the drum to allow the cases to come apart.

  • Drum is still one piece, on the drum in this video, and the current Honda 50's.

  • But you showed the part that keeps the ratchet arm in place as a bolt on. It used to be part of the drum and not removable. I broke one learning...

  • Oh, interesting. I guess I don't know about bikes that old. Thanks for letting me know.

  • very very helpfull i like it i am learning something new now how the trans works on these things....so are the 110cc the same gears as these?

  • so what everybody knows

i am from greece and i am servicing my moped and always changing crankshaft becayse i destroy them at the street race its too many cc

  • tru

  • Totally awesome.
