Nice footage bigredpondpoland. You can see two Sherman's I filmed last week in the video "Military and Flying Machines 2011 - On the Ground" on my youtube channel.
wasnt the sherman designed in the 30s? i think it was more of an infantry support weapon and wasnt designed to take on tigers etc. it was easily manufactured and reliable and could overwhelm the enemy by sheer numbers. we did have tank desroyers that could match up with german tanks but they came later in the war.,so for what the sherman did it did well, but to much was expected of it by some leaders and as usual the crews suffered, but the allies had to use the tools that were there at the time.
Sherman tanks were called "Ronson lighter" by its crews because they tended to explode and burn when hit and were very "reliable" at that, because they burned at first try
@foof811 the sherman was created to fast fire and run not for a face to face engage against an enemy tank. Some of them were lucky on surviving against the jagtigers
@Atemerus that still doesn't answer the reason why the armor on it was basically 4 squres of sheetmetal stacked. So the Sherman technically isnt a tank, but more along the lines of an armored car with a cannon.
@exceilence Those are reanctors the soviet union used the T 34 into the 70s and the isrealis used upgunned shermans into the 70s nobody uses them today.
@exceilence Only in reenactments like this. It was retired sometime in the 50's after the Korean Conflict. There are lots of them still around. I know of two relatively close sitting in front of National Guard Armories as 'yard ornaments'. The one in the video is a fairly early example with the 60 degree glacis plate and three piece transmission cover, but new enough that it has the applique armor on the sides of the hull over the ammo storage areas. Probably built sometime in '43.
Ale to kanadyjski Grizzly, nie Sherman :P Wiem, dla laika praktycznie żadna różnica, bo Grizzly był w sumie kopią M4A1, nie mniej troszkę się te czołgi różnią.

@Yagyu900 Shermans were named after a cigerate lighter by the Germans,im trying to think what the name was Crom something..Gas engines they woulod go up instantly if the gas tank was peirced..Pershing with the 90mm was the first real American tank.
@MokomaSusi Thats one of the drills you practise as Tanker...Nomacs suits wiil give you few seconds but im trying to remeber the command for exited a burning or possible expolsion thats after the Hallon has sucked the oxygen out of your lungs and you havent injected your self with ATROPEN....BAIL OUT!!!!!!! NO NO its !@@#$#*&&%)(* OUT!!!!
@spacecop67 The British called it the "Ronson," after the cigarette lighter with the slogan "Lights up the first time, every time!" Polish tankers referred to it as "The Burning Grave."
@ggeeiirr1100 M18's didnt need heavy armor. They were an ambush weapon that used high firepower and the sn speed to escape. Its speed was its greatest asset. With more armor, you compromise your speed.
....until the M10 tank destroyer came into the picture....the allied finally had something to deal with these beasts roaming around the battle fields of europe..
Untill late 1944 the allies had no real tiger killer, only tactics to take out a tiger or panther by sacrificing shermans to lure out german tanks and have a firefly take them out. Then te Comet arrived wich could take head on anything the germans had.
Over 40000 Sherman tanks produced by the end of the war!!!! You can't even compare that with the few thousand Tigers or Panthers the Germans were able to produce. The only tank that compares is the T-34 and it completely outclasses the Sherman in every category......Bloody F*cking Communist!!!

The standard gun of the T-34 far outclassed the standard gun of the Sherman. Indeed, the adapted American version sporting the High Velocity 76mm wasn't much better than the original but the Canadian (& British) Firefly was outfitted with a devastating High Velocity 17 Pounder gun that totally outclasses the T-35. The main armor of the T-34 revolutionized the entire hull design of tnaks thus outclassing the Sherman.
The major difference would be that Tanks represent CAVALRY and need to operate as thus. The Sherman was a slow piece of shit that American Tankers called Purple Heart boxes. The T-34 was fast and impartial to the land she traversed. The wider tracks of the T-34 let it blast through conditions in which the Sherman bogged down. The 35Mph of the T-35 topped the 25Mph of the Sherman and most import was the difference in engine. The Standard Sherman had a gasoline engine v.s the Deisel in the T-34.
track life was unmatch...UK and US fighter bombers hung around rail heads to slaughter the Rail Marching Panzers ... transmission was a decade ahead of anything in Europe with triple herring bone gears,,,they could really move fast to high speed in a smooth operation...Jumbo carried thicker armor than Tiger and Israeli Shermans ate T-54 and 55 alive..... nice 105 fit on the Sherman the T-34 turret squeezed a 85 mm tops...

"T-34 and it completely outclasses the Sherman in every category.."
Like in what?
Sherman had better optics for gunner
Shermans armed with "76 mm gun M1" was superior to soviet 76mm and 85mm guns.
Every Sherman had radio. T-34 did get radio for most tanks only in year 1944 when T-34/85 model come out.
Shermans were all around better quality than soviet T-34.
MokomaSusi 2 years ago
You raise a valid point I had not considered when you make refer to the Optics and the Radio in the Sherman Tank :p It's very true that EARLY Soviet Tanks had to rely on flag signaling and sighting down the barrel!!!! However, by the end of 1944 all Soviet T-34 were standardize with fairly decent gun sights and radios. The superiority of the T-34 over the Sherman comes down to the specs.

in Normandy no tank made it to shore during the charge.
Only after when the beaches have been conquered and the germans were pushed back.
Also they were already low on armor and had no major tanks formations during the first few days.
And wow if Sherman's can prevent 200 000 demoralized, fleeing soldiers with minimum if not non anti-tank eqiupment from getting a 1,5 "kill ratio"
