@KokomoRose Bruce was indeed later in The Beach Boys, and Terry Melcher did help write/produce some Beach Boys stuff in the 80's+. Indeed you are right, but Bruce & Terry were NOT The Beach Boys ;) Thank you for the comment though.
@topgeardel Yeah, they all "borrowed" from each other from what I have gathered from talking to Dean Torrence.
Just a note on why there is no Jan & Dean or Beach Boys in this top 10. It's because everyone knows who these are and I just want to let people see some other artists who were doing a simlar thing.
For the record, the Hot Rod Music trend of the early 60's exploded because of the Beach Boys hit Hot Rod tune "409" written by Brian Wilson and Gary Usher. These 10 songs are fantastic but they are undeniably influenced by the Beach Boys' Wilson/Usher tunes, not the other way around. In fact, Custom Machine is written by Brian Wilson, the original version is by The Beach Boys. My Buddy Seat is written by Wilson/Usher, and Gary Usher wrote Hot Rod High, Honda Bike, and School is a Gas.
@hotrodhigh63 Yea, I grew up listening to the BBs 'Little Deuce Coupe' album. What is amazing is that such a classic album just reached Gold Record status (sales) a few years back. How could that be? It had to be a popular album then, and has been reissued over the years. I would have thought it would at least gone Platinum after all these years.
@topgeardel The Little Deuce Coupe LP went Gold in 1966 (500,000 units sold) and Platinum (1 million sales) in '92. Sales of 7inch singles (45RPMs) were also popular through the sixties which don't count as album sales. Incidentally, Bruce Johnson of The Rip Chords would later join the Beach Boys, and The Fantastic Baggies' Steve Bari and PF Sloan sang harmonies for Jan and Dean. This stuff exists because of the BB & J&D. They were the big sellers in this genre. Nice list nonetheless!!!!
@hotrodhigh63 Really. I read a few years back that the album finally achieved 'Gold". I'm glad, it should have gone Platinum a long time ago..it's classic. I have a picture of Bruce Johnson with my wife after a concert in the 80s. He was a really nice guy. As far as 45s go, I think the only single of the BBs I ever bought was Sloop John B, but I bought everyone of their albums.
@hotrodhigh63 BTW..the irony is Bruce J. was with the BBs since the 60s. He took a brief time away, I think, and wrote a song called, "I Write the Songs". It ended up winning a Grammy. Barry Manilow sung it. It was huge. Too bad he didn't give it to the BBs. Mike Love would always make a sarcastic joke of it when he would introduce Bruce during a concert. Brian Wilson gave Jan & Dean a #1 seller, "Surf City"....lol....he should have given that to the BBs too.
I think this compilation sounds great, but instrumental surf rocks is more my style. Instrumental seems to have more depth and appeal for old and young, alike (i.e., me). Still, thanks for the exposure! I'll have to keep an eye out for some of these 45's
@dgordon86 I'd love to do a surf instrumentals top 10 also. There are so many great surf instrumentals. I'm glad that you enjoyed. I hope it's just a little bit different to the usual top 10 music lists!

MGMT - Time To Pretend (OFender Remix)

lol. There may have been NO Beach Boys and Jan and Dean songs on this..but who is kidding who.
Somebody was copying somebody. Either the BBs and J&D were stealing from all these lesser known groups, or the other way around.

@boyo1970 There is a reason Jan and dean and the BEACH BOYS dominated the charts. Not bad but J and D and the BB were much better.
ngnnick1967 1 year ago
@ngnnick1967 Indeed, I left out J&D and The Beach Boys as they are something totally seperate and deserve their own top 10!

I would really appriciate it.

@PandoraBox66 It can be found on Ronny & The Daytonas "Beach Land" album or the 3CD compilation "The Surf Set".

great selection of bands, but mostly not their best songs in my opinion. I'd like to see 11-20, because there are still a few killers missing here...
