I played this at the 2008 EIF. Brilliant game. I even got to fight the secret boss and level up enough to unlock the extra guitar. Please make this into a full game. the other music styles (western, spanish etc) should be done too, especially seeing as you liked Guitaroo Man. Keep up the good work, you deserve to have people play this.
I saw this at the SSoS event and thought it looked like it'd been built from bits of game carved from Guitaroo Man, Guitar Hero and a few generic JRPGs. I didn't really like it.
'course I didn't notice that it was for the Dare to be Digital event and had to be made to a strict timeframe, so I'm actually quite impressed.
with guitar neck on the left, strum down to walk forward, strum up to walk back (hold the strum bar in the positions!), and red and green tio turn left and right. yellow is the Action button, used to talk etc.
1. Unfortunatly at this time, you need a PS2 Controller with an Adapter that converts it to a USB connection. Otherwise the game won't work. You can technically use any USB Gamepad, but since you can't manually change the control settings, you may have a hard time playing it. We hope to fix this in the future
2. Without a controller plugged in the game crashes. Skillful programming eh? :/ We hope to fix this in the future too
Brilliant. It amazes me that you got away with a pitch that most Uni courses would have instantly failed you for blatant plagarism. Entered it into a competition which was set up to encourage young developers with ORIGINAL CONCEPTS to begin developing. I hope to god you get to market and Harmonix sue you. I also hope you enjoy the dirty money you took from teams with original concepts because if there is justice, none of you will ever get a job in the industry.
You stole the concept of Ephemental Fantasia(Konami RPG that fused Guitar Playing and RPG in 2001). Wholesale ripped off a gameplay system that has been patented(Litteraly) by Red Octane and Harmonix and then decided to use an art style that completley rips off the signature looks of Jhonen Vasquez, Tim Burton and Jamie Hewlett and won £2,500 for it?
Firstly, Ephemeral Fantasia had turn based combat and was for all purposes a fairly generic RPG with a musical minigame, nothing more. The idea we stole anything from it is laughable, heck I've never even played it.
Secondly, as has been said many times, the Japanese initially came up with the idea of Guitar Freaks (And Drum Mania, and even Band Mania) in 1998, so the gameplay system essentially belongs to Bemani along with DDR (Which, you may note, has also spawned gameplay-inspired games).
The strangest complaint here is the art style... Particularly the one about Jamie Hewlett whos artstyle (think Gorillaz for those who don't know) couldn't be further from ours :o Frankly it seems you're not that much of an art critic and were just looking for some baseless arguments to gripe at our game.
Also, an RPG with Rhythmic/Musical Combat? Hasn't been done. Unless there's some shareware/indie project going about. All games aren't 100% original: Take a look at any latest release or project and you'll see bits of past games in there - The best games take the best bits and combine them into something that works (God of War, for example, is identical to Devil May Cry in many, many ways). We took two complete different aspects of games and combined them.
Thats not the point. Sure, shoehorn musical combat in, your orginalility shines through. But you lifted a patented by US Law game system in. Read up on Sega Vs EA regarding Crazy Taxi/Simpsons Road Rage. EA lost badly. Its okay to refrence games. Timesplitters as an example homages the goldeneye concept but never resorts to outright theft. Your simply plagraising a globaly recognised game system.
Rhythm gaming started with Parapa the rapper and bemani took elements of that. Not as original as you thought. Also, The difference between guitar freaks and Guitar Hero is massive. Guitar freaks uses 3 buttons and a tilt mechanism and depends on timing to score notes. Guitar Hero uses 5 buttons and a whammy and scores on notes hit and multiplier. Very diffrent systems. You cant copyright notes falling down a screen. But you can Copyright the system used to play them.
If you have problems with this demo, how the hell do you sleep at night knowing that every 10 minutes another generic FPS/football/adventure game is released and makes MILLIONS of pounds in the real industry?
I can slep soundly because every FPS/Football/Adventure game thats decent is using its own settings, its own gameplay mechanics and own ideas and building off old ones instead of wholesale stealing. You can have multiple concepts from one idea ex. Football. You can be realistic(PES, FIFA), Arcade(Virtua Striker, Mario Strikers) or stat based(Football Manager). You can do diffrent games with a single concept.
Unlike yourself, I had the opportunity to play Ragnarawk multiple times. The similarity between them is the falling notes and nothing more. There are no ultrazap solos, bosses with demonic church organs or genie style deities in your guitar. To be quite frank this trailer does little to show the bits of the game that I enjoyed.
Furthermore you fail to realise the limitations of the competition. There was 9 weeks whereupon you had to create a game. Now if that was 90 weeks, I'm certain Voodoo Boogy could have greatly diverged the system from Guitar Hero. But being restricted to 9 weeks meant limiting on what could be developed. This was all to show what COULD be done.
But think of this another way - the purpose of the game from what I learnt of their marketing was to fill a void in the Guitar controller. It was aimed at those who knew how to play Guitar Hero and had the controller but had no other games to play, so having a similar system makes perfect sense, when you're aiming at guitar hero owners, don't reinvent the wheel.
Secondly in real life you'd get permission and pay royalties to guitar heroes authors for use of that system. So your whole argument of stealing ideas and bringing lawsuits into it doesn't work.
i played this in edinburgh well i played it like 5 times it was amazin i cant wait for a demo well done to the team for makin this a great game . G AKA petes little brother
Really enjoyed playing this at Protoplay dudes, it was one of the best games there in my opinion. You just gave over this sense of character, and style that the other teams seemed to miss out on.
The music during the battles was a keypoint, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Rift rawks too. :P
We're still discussing that, there's a few issues that'd come with trying to market this, and we'd probably have to remake a good chunk of it, but I'd at least like to see the idea availiable to the public :)
And thanks again for all the positive comments! :)
6 Teams get picked at Protoplay to do an additional pitch to some industry judges, from there 3 teams get picked to win the Dare Prizes (£2000+ for the team) and get nominated for a BAFTA (Well, BAVGA), of which one team will win.
Are you still planning on making it compatible without the Guitar? Because otherwise I don't think I'll ever be able to play it...

I did try out this game but I didn't like it at all.
First off the controls are not the type that most people will get used to without playing for hours upon end.
Secondly, it gets boring after the first time you actually use the guitar.
Thirdly this game is also very easy and can be beaten
by a 5 year old, all I did was continuously had random notes and I was finished in a second.
Sorry to say this but your attempt at making a game has utterly failed.
CraigTH 4 years ago
So that's why they've been nominated for a Bafta eh? Take a running jump into a wood chipper sausage mongler boy.
On an unrelated note, this game rocks bells! Grats guys and girls =)
joebeard 4 years ago
Actually a lot of people, young and old, picked the game up very quickly reguardless of wether they had even played Guitar Hero or any Rhythm game.
Like any sort of music game (Parappa, DDR, GH etc) some people get it, some people don't
As for the difficulty, due to time restraints we couldn't finish the harder difficulty notes on time.
