@davcr79 It is hardly "dumb" for someone with no exposure to Ireland to mispronounce a word like Laois. Regardless, Clinton Grybas was an absolute rising star of a commentator and tragically died very young. Your comments are unfortunate.
@thedublin16 You have an extremely narrow minded and melodramatic view of professional sport. You make it sound like the Empire in Star Wars.
Money and professionalism are not automatically bad, being paid allows the players to train full time, which makes the on-field aspects of the game even better, money results in better coverage, technology and investment in the game at grass roots level.
You don't see entrirely sure what you are angry about. The GAA owns no man. Let the players decide.
@thedublin16 "Service" is nothing more than a turn of phrase. No need to be pedantic about it.
Despite the professionalism at the highest level in the AFL. Australian Rules football continues to thrive at the semi-amateur (VFL, SANFL, WAFL, AFLQ) and amateur (VAFA) level. Don't buy 100 percent into what GAA blokes like Nickey Brennan and Christy Cooney say, they're just as interested in their meal ticket as they are in the future of the GAA.
irish guys ar de best in de afl ! ye sendin scouts over 2 snap up our young talent i was asked over 4 carlton trial :P cant give aweay my identity :P turned em down though GAA 4 LIFE !!!!!
i hope there will be more irish players in aussie rules footy. jim stynes was amazing and so is tadgh kenelly. colm begley might even kick 750 goals before he hits 30 years of age.
Fair play to you!great to see ye lads are getting on great over there in probably one of the best games in the world! bring on the aussie rules international cup in august in melbourne and ill see ye there!!
"LACE"..lol, it took me a few seconds there to figure out that he was on about Laois. O Hailpin sprinting after him..nothing strange about that, just the wrong sport. Change the ball or throw in a hurley and it'd be a lot better.
It's pronounced county "Leesh" if you want to read it phonetically... Not Lao as in "Chairman Mao"! Fair play to Begley, keeping the flag flying while Quigley is doing well centre field in the championship back home. C'mon Laois!
"County Laos"! Facepalm for the dumb commentator.

@thedublin16 Doesn't suddenly stop becoming a sport because you get paid.
No one owns these Irish youngsters, not even the GAA. If they want to pursue the opportunity in the AFL, good on them.

@JONOCALDWELL Do you expect the commentator to be fluent in Gaelic linguistics?
Regardless now, he is dead. R.I.P. Clinton Grybas. Died far, far, far, far, far too young.

why did brisbane let him go??
10faydom 2 years ago
Too many other half-back flankers competing for roles I guess.
It is a shame, he was a bit of a cult hero with some supporters.
He has left St Kilda now and is heading back to Laois for good. All the best Colm. You'll be missed.

Or you could actually pay your players for the services they provide, and keep them in your game. ;)
browndog1980 4 years ago
They don't have to be paid.very few of the footballers who get offers in australia actually go.but there are definitely a lot more now than before.
