  • in a survival situation you would have taken the safety guard of and dried out the flint with a piece of clothing and it would have worked

  • pull off the dumb guard on the flint wheel and it will be much easier to turn and will dry faster. it is the first thing i do will all my lighters (also makes lighting with you index-finger easier which keeps more of you hand away from the flame and you can get the light down & under your tinder better) they dry pretty quick (better than matches), but if you are stuck in the rain quick won't cut it, so KEEP it dry if you NEED fire. a lighter will give a few hundred lights v. box matches like 20?

  • This video tells people EXACTLY why they should be carrying a firesteel with them, not somecrappy lighter or matches!!! The firesteel will work when wet, and sends of 3000 degrees hot sparks!

  • The weakest part of any match is the striker. ProTool industries (the maker of the Woodsman's Pal) makes a water resistant strker called the Stryk All. I submerged the striker for 30 minutes, I retrieved it, blew the water off the striker and all matches that I tested on the striker worked. The Bic's have to have the moisture blown off the flint before they will light. good vid.

  • the lighters flint was wet let it dry

  • u should have put 1 of each inside

  • wastle of matches

  • haha you're wet

  • Thank u for wasting 8:38 minutes of my life. Wht was the point of this video??!!!

  • @Jdogg754

Why did you watch the whole video? To see how water proof matches/lighters are.

  • When I go out, I put my matches, or lighter in a zip lock bag.

  • also water proof matches you need to give it time to dry

  • try a zippo

  • the orange lighter didtnt light bc the flint was wet. give it a few min to dry and itll be fine

  • awesome vid

  • A fire steel is a good thing to own imo the water proof matches seemed like a good investment because you wait a little while it dries out and works just fine.

I use to be a smoker if you drop a bic into some water blow the water out. Flint, plastic and metal dont hold water so you are pretty safe with it.

And taking off the lighter safety's off.......cutlerylover has a tut on how to do it, i dont mind em that much but meh.

  • for the lighters, try taking the safety's off.

  • To check if the lighter work or not, just press down the lever and smell it. If you smell gas, then it's good meaning the gas has not been mixed with water. Then all you need is a spark.

  • dipping matches in wax works great.

  • Very interesting!! Great test!! Great video. thanks

  • If you get a bic wet remove the child proof band from the striker wheel, dry the striker wheel good and the lighter will light.

  • Nice! Realy nice to see! :D

  • FireSteel?

  • Great Ally!

    Very useful test!

  • The kighter didnt light because the flint is wet, when it is whet it goes like hard chalk, and does not spark, if you leave it in the sun with the flame guard off it will work, or even dab the flint down a bit, (but dont lose it)

  • Tryed the lighter this morning and it worked just fine. Camping you would have time to wait. In a survial situation maybe not

  • You can also make waterproof matches, just dip an entire match in wax. You can dip just the tip, but the water will wick its way up the wood, and still get wet. So its better to just dip the entire thing in wax.

    Yumm roast beef and cheddar!

  • Carry both in a watertight container!!! That way you'll always be able to light... and then have a iron/flint back-up.

  • Done and done. This more along the lines of do they work/what is the average joe gonna take camping?

  • you should invest in a Blastmatch sweetheart, they are great.

  • anything coleman makes is going to suck

  • great vid, but these demos are more reason to learn a few ways of making fire without matches or lighters (friction fire)just in case, you never know...

  • I hear ya. But what is the average joe gonna take...matches and/or a bic lighter.

  • true, if your talking about the average Joe, I think most woudl prefer a lighter...and in this case it IS better IF you have time for it to dry in the event it gets wet, lol...the best bet is a eletric waterproof lighter, no flint to wear out...

  • I have always heard that if you play with matches you will wet the bed....true?

  • not true! Played with matches yesterday and woke up this morning and the bed was still dry.

  • LOL

  • cool, i have less strouds book too, they are a rip-off, my friend got some, and we tested them, they should at least include a water-proof striker!

  • So true. I plan on doing several videos based on stuff I read in his book.

  • I think part of me is a pyro...I was just so intrigued with this entire video. xD

So, I'm guessing the waterproof matches are pointless since the regular ones still light after drying? I guess they could be useful if you need to light something right away after being dropped in water. Lol

  • The matches work as they claim but what they don't tell you is the striker has to be dry. not pointless if you have a dry striker.

  • Comment removed

  • easy there Tiger!

  • If you want to waterproof matches well, coat them in wax. Candle wax. and when you need to use them, scrape the way off of the match head with your fingernail

  • I have read that you can do that. I have never tried it. But the striker is the most important part. It gets wet you are in TROUBLE!

  • Strike anywhere matches

  • with the bci you hace to strike the flint until it starts to spark then it will work

  • the spark wheel was really gummy and was really hard to turn. but I will try it again when I get home.

  • With my experience a bic worked most times after air drying for a bit.

  • The one on worked. The other did sit in the bucket for about 15 min. The spark wheel was really gummy. I'll try it when I get home.

  • Great video Ally and great idea thanks do much for the info ill make sure to buy water proof ones then.Could you do a video on other fire methods(flint &striker, magnesium bar, zippo, ect.)even know im fairly sure of some.

  • I can try. I have some of those methods at home. I want to be careful of fire until we move. The porch is not big enough for much more than a table top and I REALLY don't want to try and start a fire at the park.

  • Great experiment! Learned alot from it. Keep up the vids!

  • Thanks!

  • cool comparison Ally!

  • Thanks!
