He actually is wearing at the time of this live performance, a shirt which is typically Indian (kurta), which says "sita ram" in (Hinduism) sanskrit. That means stevens has been a dabbler with one or other faith. His present identity is pretty recent and it has nothing to do with his talent & what he did in 70's 80's 90's. And there is no guarantee that he should stick to this present identity.
