@iceill3425 heck yea holyfield is in shape! He wants that heavyweight titleshot shit the heavyweight division is weak right now why wont one of the klitschko bros give him a title shot? Scrared hell yea they are to scared to fight a real heavyweight
Who the hell is that ring announcer? Its like a great feeling you have watching Evander win the title and all is great til....maaan.here comes this mfer opening his trap again.damn. and ray Leonard wasn't any better I'm tryin to tell ya people.
Douglas could`ve got back up from that knockdown, He quit, I don`t want to hear it.. Tyson knocked him down with an uppercut three times harder than that shot Holyfield hit him with and he got back up..
@Goldenchild795 douglas is one of the fighters in boxing history who had potential, but just one goal. His goal was to become heavyweight champion but not to remain champ. Riddick bowe did the same after gaining the title, he lost his motivation to keep fit, to train hard, to become great. It's a pity but I guess that's the difference between a guy who won a belt and a fighter with the heart of champion. Evander is the second one no doubt about it
In Tokio, Tyson was totally out of tune the only thing he cared about being banging Japanese girls. He was even knocked down by his sparring partner before the fight withDouglas, so that didn't herald anything good. That doesn't mean he wasn't in his prime at that time, he was, but he became too self-indulging and overconfident, like a spoiled 10-year old who gets everything he wants, but in the end he got heavily spanked and I have to say that it served him well. Nevertheless he was the BEST!
It's amazing how fast pro boxers are. Douglas (stupidly) threw that right uppercut, leaving him open for a fraction of a second, and it was all that was needed to knock him flat on his back.
can any one tell me why tyson didnt have a rematch with douglas with the unified heavy weight title at stake surley that would of bin a stipulation of the contracts for the fight ????.
Someone who has a little knowledge abot boxing if see which was Douglas weight on Tyson fight and what weight had on this fight, is easy to understand that this day it was payday for Douglas. He is more fat here and untraining. But evev if he had the same weghit who had on Tyson fight and even if he did the same hard train for Tyson fight, he hadn't no chance against Holyfield, because Evander was serious proffesional, with tiger heart inside him.
@kangluke1992 How the fuck did tyson lose to both these guys??!!
Answer: Because tyson abandoned the damato style techniques in 1988 when he fired rooney.he never had any other trainer who knew about damato techniques. As Bob arum said, tyson was as good as the program that he followed.Once that program was over(training 10 hrs a day,7 days a week, best sparring partners money can buy, defensive first posture, jabbing, move the head always, combination punching, etc) he became a one punch head hunter
@fadethetrade no it just happens to be that a bit b4 the fight busters mom died so he had no fear of Tyson he dedicated the fight to her and kicked his ass now stop telling people bull shit
What a shameful display by Douglas and IMO he's been the worst HW ever. No heart, no pride or dignity in this fight. He was like:"I beat Tyson, so who cares what happens next". Sad, being the HW champion back then was a big deal and he handled it like it was nothing, but so was he...
I agree that Douglas was in this fight to receive a big payday... he wasn't motivated to battle and push for a victory. The first shot that hurt was his signal to call it a night. The right hand was a good shot and I'm sure it hurt. It may have even hurt him worse than anything Tyson hit him with because, quite frankly, he wasn't in as good as shape. The worse shape you're in the more punches will hurt. He shook off Tyson's punches because of his conditioning.
I always say, if there was a half way decent referee in the ring when Tyson fought Douglas then Douglas would have been counted out in round 8 and that pathetic fluke of a boxer would never have been heavyweight champion!!!
@ares3030 douglas would have got up at 9 whoever the ref was. he got up at 9 by CHOICE. if the ref had counted faster, he still woulda been up by 9. tyson got the same count.
@ChrisKutz Boxers who decide to wait for a count to get up usually dont wait on their back one second before being counted out to do it, they usually wait on one knee if they really had a CHOICE. Now you maybe your right and he could have beat the count anyway but it's impossible to know for sure and considering the fact that he has been knocked out 5 other times in his career and the fact that he had a couple of extra seconds to clear his head i have a hard time believing he beats the count.
@BruceinFalkirk Being awake and having your legs are two different things, most fighters who wait out a count, don't wait until the count of 8 or 9 to get up. Furthermore, most fighters that are waiting for an 8 count don't do it laying on their side as Douglas did, they do it on their knees or feet. He was in obvious trouble and barely got up, He needed that long count! You may think that explaination is "utter shite" but i think he might have benefitted from that long count.
@ares3030 - The count was the same length for both Tyson and Douglas. Douglas was clearly listening to the count and you're more than 20 years too late.
Don King tried to overturn the result using the argument you made and was laughed out of town by the public.
@BruceinFalkirk The Ref is the ultimate authority in the ring so i wouldnt have the fight overturned even if i could, i'm simply stating my opinion that the ref botched his job and possibly cost Tyson the fight. You are correct that Tyson recieved a long count, but he should have won the fight in the 8th so that it didn't come to that. Don King may have been dismissed as you dismissed the points i made, but whats popular isn't always the truth and the truth isn't always popular.
@ares3030 - Afraid not. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the referee's count. Octavio Meyran was an experienced referee and knew what he was doing.
Mike Tyson lost the fight because he had his head punched in for several rounds and round 8 had the only significant punch he landed in it.
@BruceinFalkirk Afriad so. The count was a long count, and simply repeating yourself will add nothing new to this discussion. Douglas did nothing wrong and did win the fight in the end, but if the referee had done his job properly, he might not have had the oportunity to knock Tyson out. At this point lets just agree to disagree.
@ares3030 - One other thing. Douglas fancied the job against Tyson and always thought he could beat him - he was in the peak of condition for that match.
On this particular night, he was woefully out of shape, ironically, the kind of shape Mike Tyson expected Douglas to show up in, in Tokyo.
@BruceinFalkirk That i agree with, had tyson trained properly and took Douglas seriouly, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was the right combination of a motivated, inshape Douglas against an out of shape tyson not taking him serious, that set the scene for an upset. I still think Douglas had a little help from the Ref but he does deserve credit for a fantastic performance.
@ares3030 - one other thing, it is possible that Douglas had Tyson's number anyway. Douglas could have faced Tyson in 1987 as he was beating Tony Tucker in their fight and then, inexplicably, stopped fighting. If he hadn't, maybe the course of heavyweight history would have been changed, stranger things have happened.
Also, did you know that, when the fight was stopped, one judged had Tyson ahead and another had him dead level. The third judge had Douglas a mile in front.
how much exactly did they pay that fluke artist busta dougless to fight holyfield, busta is a disgrace he would of spent whateva that was paid to him on fried chicken
It is beyond me how no one ever mentions the fact that when tyson knocked douglas down in the 8th round that he was actually down for 14seconds robbing tyson of victory but for some reason this is never taled about.
I love the way Douglas looks for blood (eyes not even glazed from the knockdown, mind you), then just lays there waiting for his paycheck. He could have <obviously> easily gotten up.
No jealousy here, it's pretty clear that Douglas was not motivated or interested in remaining champion. This was the big payday that he'd been looking for his whole career. ----------------- Did Holyfield hurt Douglas with that shot? Sure did. And the knockdown was legitimate. But he took harder shots from Tyson and got up, then finished the job. He was checking his face for blood. He was clearly coherent and very aware of what was going on. He CHOSE to stay on the canvas.
@tylersfs He knew he had no chance against Holyfield. It was extremely one sided. Remember this was Holyfield on his absolute peak. Seen how fast and sharp he was? Offcourse Douglas wasn't in shape but don't take away all the credit from Holyfield. He beat up a very good fighter here, with ease.
@bcibibcibcpCB but this holyfield wouldnt beat the classic tyson of 1988.Ironically,it was the smarter and more rounded in the midsection holyfield(or more juiced up) that had tysons number.88 tyson would take this holy out in 7 rounds.
Instead of working the body behind the jab, Douglas thought he could counter and head hunt the MUCH faster Evander Holyfield. Looks like Tyson didn't take Douglas seriously and then Douglas turned around and pulled the same mistake!
tbh when tyson fought douglas he was not in his prime,so if he was to beat douglas tyson holyfield would never have been when tyson was at his best.the day rooney left tyson's corner was the day he deteriorated.
@willvfr -Tyson was definitely in Prime. He had went thru tons of fighters before he got to Buster & won them all. The only reason Douglas won is because Tyson underestimated him, cause douglas was a nobody. Tyson also didn't really even train for the fight. and Douglas only won because of this. Tyson treated this match as a cake walk and didn't take it seriously. Douglas on the other hand trained hard & gave it all he got. Douglas however is a nobody. He got lucky.
@xWarningAlert Douglas wasn't just lucky : Tyson wasn't fit for the fight versus Frank Bruno and he won. And Douglas was brave for this fight (not like Holyfield) : So many fighters loose vs Tyson before 1st round because they was scared ! In the beginning of 1st round James show us he was here to win and not survive.
Finally for many Tyson fans, 11 february 90 was : James "Bastard" Douglas VS "I'm down" Mike Tyson. lol
@regismo You're right. Tyson WASN'T in the best of shape for Bruno. As a result he got hit more than he should. Lucky for Tyson that night Bruno shot craps with Mike and took his chances in a slug out. Wrong move against Mike. Douglas didn't play that game. He boxed Tyson and tied him up in close or shot uppercuts in close. Douglas was the best he would ever be that night, but had Mike been at HIS best Douglas would not have beaten him. I give Douglas credit for stepping up, but Mike blew it
If Tyson would have beat Douglas then Holyfield vs Tyson would have happened when they were both in their prime. Its funny how fate works, or shall I say how fate DOES NOT work.
Holyfield is the FUCKING Man , one of the best boxers ever , throws combos and has an Iron chin , he's nearly 50 and I still wouldn't bet against him..had a oner on him to beat Tyson , 2K thanks very much.
@jeryd2003 It's weird what a death close to a fighter can do. Michael Spinks lost hius wife close to the Qawi fight and was one of the performences of his career and Lamon Brewster fought like a man possessed against Wlad Klitchko after loosing his Father. Losing his mother really sparked Douglas on to do a great thing.
@mootle661 thanks for the insight: on the other side of the coin don't you think that some fighters come along at the right time. what i meen by that is once a fighter has taken a beating the next boxer to fight him is fighting only half the fighter (holyfield fighting douglas) lewis fighting a washed up tyson. i cant remember right now other fights but after taken a beaten the very next fight the other fighter fought the same boxer but a shell of himself.
@jeryd2003 Yeah it takes a pretty special fighter to comeback the same after truly brutal fights and keep on winning. The only two that spring to mind right now are Ali and Holyfield.
Tyson wasnt in jail yet. He was scheduled to fight Holyfield right before he got convicted. he had about five fights between the douglas loss and his stint in the pen.
Yeah! everytime I've seen them do that on the tape over the last 19 years part of me thinks it was heartless, for all they knew Douglas could have been seriously hurt.
Look at this sloppy loser. Out on the cavas, stretched out on his back,...even his nipples are hard. Clearly not the same conditioned, crisp punching, momma dedicatin tyson killer that fought in Tokyo.
The commentator was correct, Douglas was guarnteed $24M before the fight, so he lacke dmotivation. Maybe the promoters should have said $24M for the WINNER of the fight, this would have inspired Douglas!
Douglas had boxed at this weight and heavier before. However, he's obviously not as fit as the Tyson fight here. Holyfield just blew away what was put in front of him - all he could do.
Douglas had all the attributes to beat everyone, his footwork in the tyson fight was amazing so was his jab..what a waste of talent..he coudlve taken holyfield if he only believed in himself.
@ Fairtrade I wont have debate with you, but your comments all over youtubeconcerning Mike Tyson being the best boxer in 86-88, is absurd,, the only thing we can talk about are facts of the fights Holyfield and tyson engaged in over their carreer, and holyfield comes out on top. He is like a very few who lost wars and returned fight again, Did Mike tyson ever win a war in the ring.. Your a punk with a little knowledge who thinks you know lot.. Just my thoughts buddy.
Who are you to say what an in-ring 'war' is. Id consider 12 rounds of boxing with two men killing each other a war. prime tyson went the distance and had great fights with green, smith, tillis, tucker, went 10 rounds with ribalta who showed great heart, non of these fighters were afraid of tyson, but they were still beaten. tyson had great stamina in his prime which some people neglect and base his stamina on post-prime fights, 1985 was tysons best year under cus, 86 and 87 were great too.
12 rounds of boxing is a war, however when you fight the best boxers possible given at any time, you step in a new area of fighting. Of course Tyson had great fights, but just like the Buster fight proved, when the going gets tough and really tough he didnt have the extra that Evander had, I believe Evander to be greatest fighter of our era, you dont have to agree or like it.
Tyson-Douglas merely proved that an unfit Tyson could be beaten by a highly motivated Douglas. Douglas had been TKOd by a peak Tony Tucker who Tyson widely outpointed.
Mike Tyson 86-92 is the best heavweight of the last 25 years in my view. Tyson essentially beat himself by not training properly. Tyson proved he could do 12 hard rounds in fights v Ruddock whom Holyfield avoided. A peak Tyson beats Holyfield+ Lewis in my view. Bowe had Holyfields number beating him 2/3 the third win by KO.
I dont believe you for one minute Evander avoided Ruddock, Look sometimes the better physical speciman of a man isnt always the best fighter, Mike tyson was insanely good, but his style was perfect for Evander and thats how fights are won, on styles. Ali seen as the best fighter by most, but its hard to look at his fights against Norton and say he won 2 outta 3, Norton won the trilogy, but who do we remember?? That third bowe fight, so close to bowe been K.O;d. Merry christmas dude.
I think Holyfield got Tyson at the right time i.e after he had spent three years in prison+ his conditioning had been permanetly eroded. I honestly thought if they had fought between 1988-1992 Tyson would have beaten Holyfeld. Holyfield as champion 1990-92 did not impress me at all, he was floored by Bert Cooper+ taken the distance + cut by ex champions Holmes+ Foreman. I knew a good big young fighter like Bowe would beat him+ so it proved.
Let's be fair to Holyfield. Given how he fought against Moorer and Bowe the third time, Holyfield looked like he had no chance against Tyson. Tyson had four warm-up fights since getting out of prison before the first Holyfield bout, so it's not like he fought fresh out prison.
I'll agree with you about Holyfield against Holmes. That was less than spectacular. But you're wrong about the Foreman fight. IF you watch it,
right at the final bell to end holyfield v holmes - larry turns to his corner and pukes all over the place , like he was holding it in till the bell ended the 12th - then blaaahhhh !
And I don't know if it's still here on Youtube, but Holyfield beat up Foreman. Watch it if it is. The fight wasn't close despite the judges mindboggling scores. It's pretty obvious there was some sympathy points for Foreman (and I say this as a huge Foreman fan). But Holyfield, IMO easily dominated that bout against Foreman 11 rounds to 1. Maybe 10-2. I can't see how someone could, in good faith, score it any more for Foreman.
I agree, Evander was my hero at that time. No-one moves from cruiser, ducks no-one (Ruddock LOL, thats the first I've heard he ducked Ruddock) and beats almost everyone that was available. Tyson avoided Lewis and ducked Foreman as his trainers said 'it would'nt be a good fight for Mike.' Holyfield had it all, stamina, guts, underrated power, speed and a huge heart. Tyson had many talents, but he did not have all of the things Holyfield had. Simple as that!!
Green, Smith, Tillis, Tucker and Ribalata are all bums! Tyson looked better than he was and he never learned how to deal with punishment coming back his way. Whenever he was hit with great frequency and could'nt hurt his opponents, he lost. That is not the sign of a great fighter. Whenever he had to dig deep, I mean really deep like the legends before him had to, he lost everytime. He threw great combos, moved and had power, but never had the little bit extra that makes him a legend in my book.
If tyson had only a fraction of the warrior spirit and heart of Evander Holyfield - he would have been champion forever .
Tyson had a streak of dog in him - when the fighters didnt fall over he got confused and angry - took cheap shots , and if his power failed him he had no plan B to fall back on .
That's one hell of a way to describe Tyson!! Different to the normal things I hear. You're bang on too, he fell to pieces when things did'nt go his way and if he had the warrior spirit of Evander he would have reigned for a long, long time. With Tyson there was never a plan B and when he had to he could never dig deep to win.
wow, he beats tyson in a very "wow" fashion, then he looses to holyfield, in wat the 3rd?? wat a joke, he didnt even try to get up.... yea i really believe buster had mommy hel[ing him out in that tyson fight, cause in this one he does not look anything near as how he looked in the tyson fight....
douglas was a joke and tyson should be embarrassed to lose to this guy.Douglas even had the style that gave holyfield trouble from everyone else with this douglas style.even holmes ith the jab almost drew with holyfierld.Douglas was a tomato can who caught tyson on a 30% day.
why should he be embarrased you wouldnt stand 2 rounds with douglas mike tyson is one of the gr8est boxers of all time if he looses why should he be embarrased?
because tyson lost 9 rounds out of 10 to a prepared, focused tomato can .Tyson was asleep in tokyo and asleep in training for douglas when greg Page knocked tyson down twice in sparring. He should be embarrassed about that too.
A true champion doesn't have a 30% day. Douglas took his chance and he won outboxing him on the day. Holyfield did the same with Douglas. Neither Douglas nor Tyson lived up to their potential. Tyson is more known for his personal life than being a champion. That says it all.
Holyfield had the best record against past, present and future world champions of any heavyweight in history... and most would be surprised at how far ahead he is from everyone in that department..
he has fought more title holders than any man in history and his record is the best...
Holyfield and his spunky record aint shit compared to Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali Rocky Marciano or even Vitali Klitschko who has an outstanding record worthy of being regarded as a legend 39wins 38kos 2 losses by stoppage due to injury never been outboxed as a pro, ppl call VK boring but man Holyfield is worse this is prob his most entertaining fight but usally its hit n hold all night fuck him he got banged Ruiz and Toney lol
yeah im stupid and ive never seen a boxing match in my life im sorry holyfield is amazing everytime someone mentions most entertaining or greatest heavyweight of all time holyfields name always the first to pop up how naive of me lol
your the only fag cunt wot u bring your gay lover leatherneck in the equation to try n bolster ur opinion bitch lmao wot a pair of queer mother fuckers
douglas could of got up but he doesnt have any heart and just took the money then blew up to 400 pounds. thats a shame to cause he was a decent fighter but never took it seriously.
Do you guys realize the only fighter with some championship qualities holy ever fought who was in HIS prime fighting period was Bowe and Lewis and he was basically dominated by Both!! Holy was an overrated fighter with ali type vicerol heaart.
Yeah, holy had hepititas.Against dokes ,he had poison oak, against chokin bert cooper,he has gout. What holyfield had was steroid use and lots of it.Braxton wrote a big article on holys use of steroids and Ive benn tellling everyone sanders told my cousin that holy juiced starting in 87 and they also applied cream on him in the first braxton fight.Holys problems, his inconsistancieslosing to subpars and looking amazing in other fights and his HEART PROBLEMS all attributed to steroids!!!
He was a fucking fraud and only a cruiser weight by nature and he should be investigated.Fuck holyfield .Tyson in his best ability would kill this fraud if he didnt take anything and tyson never took steroids,he didnt need to at 19 ,he weighed 216 lbs,at 25 he still weighed 216. Holyfiled at 19 weighed 170 lbs and at 25 still only weighed 188 lbs. That should be his natural weight,no heavier and an admitted junk food addict doesnt gain 30 lbs in 2 yrs and still maintain his 29 inch waist.
And tyson only needed to get a little busier against douglas and even out of shape mentally and physically, tyson should still have beaten douglas. These guys don't impress me at all. also Bowe was overrated in my mind.
Do you think the Holyfield that showed up against Douglas could go toe to toe with a prime Roy Jones Jr. Or would Roy Jones knock him out in a toe to toe slugfest?
Trust me, he is! I'll explain in two comments due to character count restrictions.
Firstly I'll accept that Lennox Lewis is greater than Holyfield, but Holyfield is still top-10. The Bowe who beat Holyfield in their first fight would've given any top-10 heavyweight serious difficulties, and when he lost in their third fight he had Hepatitis. When he lost against Michael Moorer he was visibly not his usual self, due to shoulder injuries and a suspected heart condition.
Hepatitis, shoulder, heart condition are irrelelvant. A boxer can only fight whoever steps through the ropes. If a fighter is not physically healthy that's part of it and nobody's problem but his own.
And if I could run faster I could beat Usain Bolt.
Other than those losses (and he avenged the loss to Moorer with a knockout), he beat everyone put in front of him 'till 1999, and how old was he then? 37?
And as for him beating what you called "a washed up Tyson", Tyson became "washed up" immediately after he lost to Holyfield twice did he? EVERYONE thought that Holyfield would be KILLED in the ring against Tyson. Holyfield was 34 in '96, and he whupped Tyson with a boxing masterclass.
As for the 10 losses on his record, 7 came post '99.
So hang on a moment, you're arguing that Tyson was washed up (and you're using that as an excuse for his loss to Douglas and Holyfield) yet you're saying that Hepatitis, a heart condition & shoulder injuries isn't a valid excuse for Holyfield's poor performance in a limited number of fights? You're showing blatant favouritism. Tyson could've "absolutely destroyed Holyfield" in 1996 if he was ever so good as you seem to think he was. He was 30 fighting a 34 year old. Holyfield is 'the real deal'
Tyson was weak mentally and was done by age 24. I don't think we can say Holyfield is a great fighter because he beat Tyson.
What I said was at their best Holyfield would have been destroyed by Tyson.
The Unfortunate thing about boxing is that great fighters are sporadic and they never catch each other in their prines. One is always on the way up and the other on the way down.
Once he left damato camp, his stamina dropped considerably and his herky/jerky slip and s;ide for 12 rounds style was over when he fought bruno in 1989.
Youre right about his mentality,it caused him to throw the one punch at a time style after firing rooney and not having to listen to rooney tell him in training that "you wont beat everyone with head hunting with one punchat a time. You have to do it with jabbing in and combinations to body and head and always be moving the head".He was too mentally unstable to follow those rules.
I was told by a journalist one time that it was very difficult for tyosn to ,maintain that technique of slipping in, sliding in,jabbing, double left hooks, body shots and combination punching 3 ,4 punch combos at a time.all this technique was required to beat guys like douglas where this style would make douglas dance to tysons music instead of vise versa and this style would force holyfield into uncompromising positions because tysons accurate combinations in close would force holy into a war.
watching this fight, even though holy ko'd douglas,I don't see anything in holy trhat would be able to handle a tyson from the 1988 year.Holy here appears to have a 30 inch waist.Tysons body shots would have to have an effect on this holyfield anatomy.
Holyfield was a tough, wiley veteren but I think Tyson in his prime would have walked through him. Tyson had trouble with bigger taller guys, Holyfield was just not big enough and would not have been able to keep Tyson off him.
I agree with the holy asssesment.Watching evander on queer street against another tyson clone but nothing like tyson,Cooper, had holy OUT on his feet and tyson finished EVERYONE in that state.Holy wasn't made of iron,he wasnt superman,he was made of flesh and blood and could be KO'd,watch what bowe did in the third fight.Holy needed to use head butting and puching tactics to beat a ghost of a tyson. But holy didnt have those smarts in the late 80s and early 90;s
Evander was on queer street against Cooper (who had a decent punch), but Holyfield has been in with some big punchers over the course of his career, and has outlasted them. The biggest difference between '88 Tyson and '96 Tyson was that, in his prime, Tyson had a more patient style and better conditioning, so I'd imagine him going 12 rounds against Holyfield & Lewis. Holyfield took the best of Tyson's body shots in their first fight, and made Tyson back up, despite being the smaller man.
Thats the usual statements coming from alot of people. They don't realize tyson wasnt able to land his punches on douglas and holy(except the 8th round ,douglas) and holy got caught with a right 3 seconds in the first round.
When they nullified tysons ability to land the one sloppy bomb, they dominated him.All this idiot needed to do against douglas and holy was to throw combinations as he did in 86-88.Get busy, busy, busy with combinations to the body and head.
tyson is a vegan now and animal rights activist.

It's amazing how fast pro boxers are. Douglas (stupidly) threw that right uppercut, leaving him open for a fraction of a second, and it was all that was needed to knock him flat on his back.

Sad, being the HW champion back then was a big deal and he handled it like it was nothing, but so was he...
chifuli1974 1 year ago
by the way, who is even the current boxing champion??? lol, boxing is such a has been sport since tyson's era
delli2011 1 year ago
I agree that Douglas was in this fight to receive a big payday... he wasn't motivated to battle and push for a victory. The first shot that hurt was his signal to call it a night. The right hand was a good shot and I'm sure it hurt. It may have even hurt him worse than anything Tyson hit him with because, quite frankly, he wasn't in as good as shape. The worse shape you're in the more punches will hurt. He shook off Tyson's punches because of his conditioning.
eugenemcgirt 1 year ago
Douglas could have been a better boxer than that, too bad he wasted hisself...
Ubergood 1 year ago
I always say, if there was a half way decent referee in the ring when Tyson fought Douglas then Douglas would have been counted out in round 8 and that pathetic fluke of a boxer would never have been heavyweight champion!!!
ares3030 1 year ago 3
@ares3030 douglas would have got up at 9 whoever the ref was. he got up at 9 by CHOICE. if the ref had counted faster, he still woulda been up by 9. tyson got the same count.
ChrisKutz 1 year ago
@ChrisKutz Boxers who decide to wait for a count to get up usually dont wait on their back one second before being counted out to do it, they usually wait on one knee if they really had a CHOICE. Now you maybe your right and he could have beat the count anyway but it's impossible to know for sure and considering the fact that he has been knocked out 5 other times in his career and the fact that he had a couple of extra seconds to clear his head i have a hard time believing he beats the count.
ares3030 1 year ago
@ares3030 - Utter shite. Douglas punched Tyson's head in throughout the fight and was awake and listening to the count when he was on the canvas.
Douglas deserved to win on the night.
BruceinFalkirk 3 weeks ago
@BruceinFalkirk Being awake and having your legs are two different things, most fighters who wait out a count, don't wait until the count of 8 or 9 to get up. Furthermore, most fighters that are waiting for an 8 count don't do it laying on their side as Douglas did, they do it on their knees or feet. He was in obvious trouble and barely got up, He needed that long count! You may think that explaination is "utter shite" but i think he might have benefitted from that long count.
ares3030 3 weeks ago
@ares3030 - The count was the same length for both Tyson and Douglas. Douglas was clearly listening to the count and you're more than 20 years too late.
Don King tried to overturn the result using the argument you made and was laughed out of town by the public.
BruceinFalkirk 2 weeks ago
@BruceinFalkirk The Ref is the ultimate authority in the ring so i wouldnt have the fight overturned even if i could, i'm simply stating my opinion that the ref botched his job and possibly cost Tyson the fight. You are correct that Tyson recieved a long count, but he should have won the fight in the 8th so that it didn't come to that. Don King may have been dismissed as you dismissed the points i made, but whats popular isn't always the truth and the truth isn't always popular.
ares3030 2 weeks ago
@ares3030 - Afraid not. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the referee's count. Octavio Meyran was an experienced referee and knew what he was doing.
Mike Tyson lost the fight because he had his head punched in for several rounds and round 8 had the only significant punch he landed in it.
BruceinFalkirk 2 weeks ago
@BruceinFalkirk Afriad so. The count was a long count, and simply repeating yourself will add nothing new to this discussion. Douglas did nothing wrong and did win the fight in the end, but if the referee had done his job properly, he might not have had the oportunity to knock Tyson out. At this point lets just agree to disagree.
ares3030 2 weeks ago
@ares3030 - One other thing. Douglas fancied the job against Tyson and always thought he could beat him - he was in the peak of condition for that match.
On this particular night, he was woefully out of shape, ironically, the kind of shape Mike Tyson expected Douglas to show up in, in Tokyo.
BruceinFalkirk 2 weeks ago
@BruceinFalkirk That i agree with, had tyson trained properly and took Douglas seriouly, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was the right combination of a motivated, inshape Douglas against an out of shape tyson not taking him serious, that set the scene for an upset. I still think Douglas had a little help from the Ref but he does deserve credit for a fantastic performance.
ares3030 2 weeks ago
@ares3030 - one other thing, it is possible that Douglas had Tyson's number anyway. Douglas could have faced Tyson in 1987 as he was beating Tony Tucker in their fight and then, inexplicably, stopped fighting. If he hadn't, maybe the course of heavyweight history would have been changed, stranger things have happened.
Also, did you know that, when the fight was stopped, one judged had Tyson ahead and another had him dead level. The third judge had Douglas a mile in front.

I love the way Douglas looks for blood (eyes not even glazed from the knockdown, mind you), then just lays there waiting for his paycheck. He could have <obviously> easily gotten up.
tylersfs 1 year ago
@tylersfs do u suggest that Holyfield didn't hurt Douglas? hahahaha then u are just jealous
szymusiek1980 1 year ago
No jealousy here, it's pretty clear that Douglas was not motivated or interested in remaining champion. This was the big payday that he'd been looking for his whole career. ----------------- Did Holyfield hurt Douglas with that shot? Sure did. And the knockdown was legitimate. But he took harder shots from Tyson and got up, then finished the job. He was checking his face for blood. He was clearly coherent and very aware of what was going on. He CHOSE to stay on the canvas.
tylersfs 1 year ago
@tylersfs He knew he had no chance against Holyfield. It was extremely one sided. Remember this was Holyfield on his absolute peak. Seen how fast and sharp he was? Offcourse Douglas wasn't in shape but don't take away all the credit from Holyfield. He beat up a very good fighter here, with ease.
bcibibcibcpCB 1 year ago
@bcibibcibcpCB but this holyfield wouldnt beat the classic tyson of 1988.Ironically,it was the smarter and more rounded in the midsection holyfield(or more juiced up) that had tysons number.88 tyson would take this holy out in 7 rounds.
fadethetrade 1 year ago
@fadethetrade I agree about the juiced up bit. Holyfield circa 1996 was a gorilla.

tbh when tyson fought douglas he was not in his prime,so if he was to beat douglas tyson holyfield would never have been when tyson was at his best.the day rooney left tyson's corner was the day he deteriorated.
willvfr 1 year ago
@willvfr -Tyson was definitely in Prime. He had went thru tons of fighters before he got to Buster & won them all. The only reason Douglas won is because Tyson underestimated him, cause douglas was a nobody. Tyson also didn't really even train for the fight. and Douglas only won because of this. Tyson treated this match as a cake walk and didn't take it seriously. Douglas on the other hand trained hard & gave it all he got. Douglas however is a nobody. He got lucky.

@xWarningAlert Thats true...and Douglas was also fighting for his mother who had just passed away.He had alot of heart because of that.
MrRustyGuns 1 year ago
@xWarningAlert not lucky.... buster ko tyson??? lucky is split decision. but this is straight ass whoopin buster did to tyson.
deonvan 1 year ago
@xWarningAlert Douglas wasn't just lucky : Tyson wasn't fit for the fight versus Frank Bruno and he won. And Douglas was brave for this fight (not like Holyfield) : So many fighters loose vs Tyson before 1st round because they was scared ! In the beginning of 1st round James show us he was here to win and not survive.
Finally for many Tyson fans, 11 february 90 was : James "Bastard" Douglas VS "I'm down" Mike Tyson. lol
regismo 1 year ago
@regismo You're right. Tyson WASN'T in the best of shape for Bruno. As a result he got hit more than he should. Lucky for Tyson that night Bruno shot craps with Mike and took his chances in a slug out. Wrong move against Mike. Douglas didn't play that game. He boxed Tyson and tied him up in close or shot uppercuts in close. Douglas was the best he would ever be that night, but had Mike been at HIS best Douglas would not have beaten him. I give Douglas credit for stepping up, but Mike blew it

@jeryd2003 It's weird what a death close to a fighter can do. Michael Spinks lost hius wife close to the Qawi fight and was one of the performences of his career and Lamon Brewster fought like a man possessed against Wlad Klitchko after loosing his Father. Losing his mother really sparked Douglas on to do a great thing.
mootle661 1 year ago
@mootle661 thanks for the insight: on the other side of the coin don't you think that some fighters come along at the right time. what i meen by that is once a fighter has taken a beating the next boxer to fight him is fighting only half the fighter (holyfield fighting douglas) lewis fighting a washed up tyson. i cant remember right now other fights but after taken a beaten the very next fight the other fighter fought the same boxer but a shell of himself.
jeryd2003 1 year ago
@jeryd2003 Yeah it takes a pretty special fighter to comeback the same after truly brutal fights and keep on winning. The only two that spring to mind right now are Ali and Holyfield.

Just my thoughts buddy.
mikeytheworm 2 years ago
i like this.. very true..
justinjury227 2 years ago
Who are you to say what an in-ring 'war' is. Id consider 12 rounds of boxing with two men killing each other a war. prime tyson went the distance and had great fights with green, smith, tillis, tucker, went 10 rounds with ribalta who showed great heart, non of these fighters were afraid of tyson, but they were still beaten. tyson had great stamina in his prime which some people neglect and base his stamina on post-prime fights, 1985 was tysons best year under cus, 86 and 87 were great too.
gregm20072007 2 years ago
12 rounds of boxing is a war, however when you fight the best boxers possible given at any time, you step in a new area of fighting. Of course Tyson had great fights, but just like the Buster fight proved, when the going gets tough and really tough he didnt have the extra that Evander had, I believe Evander to be greatest fighter of our era, you dont have to agree or like it.
mikeytheworm 2 years ago
07091102 2 years ago 3
I dont believe you for one minute Evander avoided Ruddock, Look sometimes the better physical speciman of a man isnt always the best fighter, Mike tyson was insanely good, but his style was perfect for Evander and thats how fights are won, on styles. Ali seen as the best fighter by most, but its hard to look at his fights against Norton and say he won 2 outta 3, Norton won the trilogy, but who do we remember?? That third bowe fight, so close to bowe been K.O;d. Merry christmas dude.
mikeytheworm 2 years ago
I think Holyfield got Tyson at the right time i.e after he had spent three years in prison+ his conditioning had been permanetly eroded. I honestly thought if they had fought between 1988-1992 Tyson would have beaten Holyfeld. Holyfield as champion 1990-92 did not impress me at all, he was floored by Bert Cooper+ taken the distance + cut by ex champions Holmes+ Foreman. I knew a good big young fighter like Bowe would beat him+ so it proved.
Merry Christmas to you too!
07091102 2 years ago
Let's be fair to Holyfield. Given how he fought against Moorer and Bowe the third time, Holyfield looked like he had no chance against Tyson. Tyson had four warm-up fights since getting out of prison before the first Holyfield bout, so it's not like he fought fresh out prison.
I'll agree with you about Holyfield against Holmes. That was less than spectacular. But you're wrong about the Foreman fight. IF you watch it,
rroma72 2 years ago
right at the final bell to end holyfield v holmes - larry turns to his corner and pukes all over the place , like he was holding it in till the bell ended the 12th - then blaaahhhh !

@chisacat
Yeah. Somebody posted a video of that. Now I just wish someone would post the entire fight.
rroma72 2 years ago
And I don't know if it's still here on Youtube, but Holyfield beat up Foreman. Watch it if it is. The fight wasn't close despite the judges mindboggling scores. It's pretty obvious there was some sympathy points for Foreman (and I say this as a huge Foreman fan). But Holyfield, IMO easily dominated that bout against Foreman 11 rounds to 1. Maybe 10-2. I can't see how someone could, in good faith, score it any more for Foreman.
rroma72 2 years ago
@07091102 tyson was a bully holyfield would bet tyson in eny stage of his career and he had heart problems so hes a much greater fighter than tyson
MrBRK1975 1 year ago
I agree, Evander was my hero at that time. No-one moves from cruiser, ducks no-one (Ruddock LOL, thats the first I've heard he ducked Ruddock) and beats almost everyone that was available. Tyson avoided Lewis and ducked Foreman as his trainers said 'it would'nt be a good fight for Mike.' Holyfield had it all, stamina, guts, underrated power, speed and a huge heart. Tyson had many talents, but he did not have all of the things Holyfield had. Simple as that!!
OscarDanDan76 2 years ago 2

how about lennox or marvin hagler , also bowe defeated holyfield 2 of 3 which makes bowe the better boxer u dumbass
blackoil911 2 years ago
Green, Smith, Tillis, Tucker and Ribalata are all bums! Tyson looked better than he was and he never learned how to deal with punishment coming back his way. Whenever he was hit with great frequency and could'nt hurt his opponents, he lost. That is not the sign of a great fighter. Whenever he had to dig deep, I mean really deep like the legends before him had to, he lost everytime. He threw great combos, moved and had power, but never had the little bit extra that makes him a legend in my book.
OscarDanDan76 2 years ago
If tyson had only a fraction of the warrior spirit and heart of Evander Holyfield - he would have been champion forever .
Tyson had a streak of dog in him - when the fighters didnt fall over he got confused and angry - took cheap shots , and if his power failed him he had no plan B to fall back on .
chisacat 2 years ago
That's one hell of a way to describe Tyson!! Different to the normal things I hear. You're bang on too, he fell to pieces when things did'nt go his way and if he had the warrior spirit of Evander he would have reigned for a long, long time. With Tyson there was never a plan B and when he had to he could never dig deep to win.

why should he be embarrased you wouldnt stand 2 rounds with douglas mike tyson is one of the gr8est boxers of all time if he looses why should he be embarrased?

because tyson lost 9 rounds out of 10 to a prepared, focused tomato can .Tyson was asleep in tokyo and asleep in training for douglas when greg Page knocked tyson down twice in sparring. He should be embarrassed about that too.
fadethetrade 2 years ago
A true champion doesn't have a 30% day. Douglas took his chance and he won outboxing him on the day. Holyfield did the same with Douglas. Neither Douglas nor Tyson lived up to their potential. Tyson is more known for his personal life than being a champion. That says it all.

What? Holyfield is a top-10 all time heavyweight,!Roy Jones would get KO'd within the first couple of rounds.
HarryTheTalkingDude 2 years ago
Holyfield is no way top 10. He was 42-10-2. All he did was beat a washed up Tyson. Lewis, a real champ schooled him twice.
Midnightrambler3760 2 years ago
Trust me, he is! I'll explain in two comments due to character count restrictions.
Firstly I'll accept that Lennox Lewis is greater than Holyfield, but Holyfield is still top-10. The Bowe who beat Holyfield in their first fight would've given any top-10 heavyweight serious difficulties, and when he lost in their third fight he had Hepatitis. When he lost against Michael Moorer he was visibly not his usual self, due to shoulder injuries and a suspected heart condition.

Trust me he isn't even close.

Tyson was washed up before Douglas. It just took Douglas to expose him. Tyson in his prime would have absolutely destroyed Holyfield.
Lewis beat the snot out of him twice, was quite comical actually.

You have to do it with jabbing in and combinations to body and head and always be moving the head".He was too mentally unstable to follow those rules.

he was surrounded by Don King's crew telling him he's "the man" and I guess he believed it.
Don King also told him he was a black fighter dancing for white masters who he couldn't trust. So he goes to Don King who robs him blind.
Unfortunately most boxers are not well educated and they are easy prey for rip off artists.

Holyfield took the best of Tyson's body shots in their first fight, and made Tyson back up, despite being the smaller man.

tyson landed 2 body shots in that entire fight, one was from the bolo combo in the 5th.THATS IT!!!!!!
