  • stop hating on this guy. His style, ideas are fantastic. His twinkle motif works well with impressions and he admits to trying this idea and developing it. Great job man. You sound exactly like Fontana.

  • I know it's all subjective, but i think the only bad thing in this is the Twinkle Sminkle quote. It may well fit, but it's corny as hell. The rest is all very promising. Keep playing, relax and play what you mean, not what you think is clever, and you'll be great. Good luck.

  • I'm a fan man. good ideas nice twinkle riffs. Maybe try to side step a little more especially in Eb- section. just some variety. Especially liked that you used your head rather than range to sound interesting. Awesome job dude.

  • The best thing you can do is learn riffs in all 12 keys. Stuff that fits over 2/5/1's and 1/6/2/5's is a good place to start. Also, to learn jazz you have to listen to great players! If you're a bone player, guys like Frank Rosolino, Carl Fontana and Bill Watrous are definitely good for increasing your improvisational vocabulary.

  • nice work. i've been working out of bob mcchesney's book as well and it's an important asset that i think everytrombone player should have. i'm curious, what type of horn is that? and your tone is good too. nice job.

    The horn is an Edwards. The bell has a satin finish instead of the usual laquer finish. I had it custom made at the Edwards factory and have tried other models (Jiggs Whigham Kings, etc etc) and I love this horn a thousand times more. Highly recommend doing the same if you are serious about playing music.

    1)if that was the doodle tonging technique, then how can i learn it for playing jazz.

    2)i like ur cup mute it sounds warm

    3)i dig ur solo its definitley outside the box with an element of simplism. cool licks too.

  • 1)It is doodle tonguing. I would suggest buying Bob McChesney's book on Doodle Tonguing. Also, just listen to swinging eighth note lines and try to mimic it with your voice (i.e. Doo ooo doo ooo, doo duh la, etc.)

  • In my opinion, trombonists don't need to use doodle-tonguing - there are other ways to play fast on the trombone that sound more like you are playing a trombone, eg single or double tonguing!

  • You're absolutely right. JJ Johnson never learned to doodle tongue. I think my tonguing leans more towards a fast single tongue. With that said, the doodle book is good to practice your speed with whatever tonguing style you're using. Best advice is just to try stuff and see what works for you.
