A lot of his "alternative takes" seem to be completely different songs, just with the same or similar lyrics. It's funny how often he'd re-use unused lyrics, but never seems to have re-used music. I love Cover Me, but this is great. It's a shame he never came up with new lyrics for it and released it on a future album.
Does anybody know, does Bruce own the rights to these? Or did he just record them and never copyright them, referring to all of these unreleased songs.
@Palakto All I know is that he just recorded them i don't think he copyrighted any. Max said that he had like 60 or 70 outtakes from the Born In The U.S.A. album. So, there is a lot out there somewhere.
@BrunoLeBoss Dave Marsh says the released version is a demo Bruce recorded for Donna Summer in '82. He kept it for himself, then soured on it and for a long time considered it ineligible for the album, which meant its lyrics could be donated to newer songs. My theory is that Bruce later came up with the 7-note riff for the unreleased version and needed a 7-syllable phrase to go with it. The phrase "cover me" only has three, so he added "drop on down and." Later the original returned to favor.

Yes, Bruce copyrights all his stuff that he records. Once it's on tape, the management crew take them and copyright them.

I am in awe of this song. I have no doubt it would've gone Top 10 if he'd put it out in the '80s.

@Turtle152 It did reach the Top 10. But it was the final version called "Cover Me", not as good as this alternate version, unfortunately...
