Wd40 majior corrosive. I sprayed down my rem 1100 and put in dry box for storage. Came home a year later. Shot gun ruined. Pitted every metel surface. WD 40 pure garbage. !!!
@MrStarskypuss lol... yeah my friends from Hawaii use that trick for their worms, and it works! They also inflate the worms too! I am not sure if I would want my whole boat smelling like w-d though... could be like chumming... but end up with a bigger fish than you want!!! cough*** shark!
I've used WD-40 on plastics before and most of the time, it does seem to be okay, but for my Kayak, I wouldn't consider it. Clean it with Simple Green and then wipe it down with 303. It restores the lustre and provides protection from the sun.
Not sure how environmentally friendly this is. I'm no tree huger, but I'm all for clean, non-polluted lakes. Green Rhino advertises itself as the safe alternative--don't know, haven't tried it.
You may want to let your friend know before spraying his boat and axles down with WD-40 that it will desolve grease and oil. I clean tar off tools when I do a roof repairs, it will clean grease out of a set of bearings.
wd-40 actually does contain a lubricant which is why instructions recommend spraying tools before storage, even ski bindings. 303 is OK imho but I prefer the new product called ICE I think by turtle wax. It's a liquid that provides SPF and beads water. I wouldn't use it on my car unless its old and faded, but found it worked magic on my plastics. DON"T let it touch glass...(fish finder) ever. Worst hard to remove streaks. Yeah ice synthetic wax super cheap at walmart. Thumbs up yakntexas!
Sorry Ty, No fish oil in WD-40. Years ago, Yes! They changed the formula in the 80's. WD-40 is a corrosive. This is a penetrent for loosening corroded nuts and bolts. If you spray this on squeaky parts, yes it will stop the sqeak, temporarily, but it starts to react with the metal.... just a thought. Little research my may make your life a lot easier later.
I'm not sure wd40 is real good for covering your boats with considering your going to put them in the water and leave a nice oil trail where ever you go.
It's a water dispersant so isn't something you want to be introducing to a river system for example. I'm sure there are other products out there which would better suit your needs. A lanolin based product might be better or at least worth looking into.
@yakntexas Ty, the product is called 303 Aerospace Protectant, It works like "an SPF 40 for your stuff." It's great on everything - rubber, vinyl, fiberglass, gelcoat, plastics, carbon fiber, leather, pool and patio stuff, etc. For a complete list, check the manufacturer's website. I give my yak a seasonal treatment. This stuff is not oily or greasy, which will trap dirt and leave a nice slick behind as you paddle. The stuff is also good for the rubber gaskets in drysuits - Kokatat said so.
@yakntexas How does a kayaker who has his own show not know what 303 is?!? I'd think anyone who wants to take care of their boats would look into a specified product. Rather than use something his buddy grabbed by pure luck. 303 is a Charm
So I was thinking the other day, couldn't you just use armor all? It's got built in UV Protectant, oil, no foul scent and soaks right in same way it does on your cars dash!!! Should give your yaks perfect restore shine I did it to my canoe!!!
WD40 does attract fish. I know from experience. Spray it on spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. Soft plastics, too!
