A+ I was so lucky to have been exposed to the likes of Belly as a preteen and teenager. Only 5 years later was the popular music such crap. Love love love Belly!
Belly had quite the "big break," actually... Tanya was already well-known for being in Throwing Muses and The Breeders, and they had a huge radio hit with "Feed The Tree" and a hit first record. Their second record just didn't resonate with people for some reason. But I mean, look at the size of that crowd jumping up and down to them.
WOW. They're AWESOME!!!! I'm 16 and just found them.... Why is it that some talented amazing bands don't get their "Big break"?!?! It REALLY gets me because the female singer's doing more than just stand there with a friggin tambourine and miniskirt and knows what she's doing!! Sometimes I feel like female musicians need to do everything 2x as good as guys to get noticed for the right reasons. Bullcrap. I'm definitely a fan of this sound. Glad I found them!!
Belly recorded 2 studio albums, "Star" and "King" before they broke up. Tanya Donelly went on do solo work and Gail joined L7. The Gorman brothers went on to do artistic work in other media.
Around '93-'94, Belly were Alternative/College radio darlings and poised to become huge, and for some reason it just didn't happen, and they broke up in 1996, I think. Shame. Their two albums still sound great to me and not dated at all. I listen to them often.
I've had a crush on Tanya Donelly for more than 20 years ever since I first heard her voice with the Throwing Muses. I kick myself for never seeing Belly in concert.
I remember I got so much flack from my friends at college for liking this band. Of course, all they knew was Gepetto and I believe that was their only hit single. I may be wrong. But I played them this song off Star and they were impressed. Great song and maybe the best on that album.
i saw these in a clash of the bands and a band called forskin and crack busters and logic clock played non of them are about any more, the days of the small garage bands
I was a big fan of this band in the early ninties. The Star album was a masterpiece in my opinion, and they were fantastic live. I believe they even hosted an episode of 120 minutes on Mtv among many other appearances. I loved belly's covers of Jimmy Hendrix and Tom Jones. I was a little sad when the band disappeared from the music scene. As a guitar player myself, I was also very impressed by Tom Gorman (check Verbal Assault for more Gorman). Star is the record I always wanted to make!
Amen to every word you said. I just this minuteleft a comment on another Belly video about how great a guitar player Gorman is cause I hadn't seen any other comments to that effect. He was a huge influence on my guitar playing. They just had great tunes.
Oh... incredible song, i really love belly. It's a sadness that have been separated ... Tanya is really a lesbian? I'm very confused, many say that if, as many say they do not
I've often wondered why more people don't like Belly (no one that I know, knows about them). In a way that's good because I feel like they're "my band." If there's a God above may they reunite!
I also saw Belly live years ago when they were on tour with Catherine Wheel. Belly came out with two fantastic albums, and then they disappeared. What happened to them?
From what I understand, they simply stopped playing together, although Tanya Donelly has persued a solo career with various other musicians. I'd like to think that one day they will tour once again, but I've been told by certain sources that the likelihood of this is slim. We do however have our memories of them, and that will have to suffice for now. I just adore the music that they made together. Furthermore, I have yet to hear anything like it since I first saw them when I was 21.
Great vid..look at that crowd. Cant imagine that many Belly fans in one place. I didnt know anyone else who appreciated them back in 94, but then I never made it to a live show either. Damn
@theSTAR70 yup, they're both totally straight, even though Tanya was my first lesbian crush when i was 13 and she's still not bad, even when i'm 32. what i wouldn't have gave for her to be a dyke when i was young hehe
Wow !

Belly was a band like no other. I love these tunes that start mellow, and just suddenly explode. Like Seal My Fate. Just amazing.

MarcosLogiotatos: Thank you for the fast and detailed response.
You won't find many musicians like Tanya Donelly anymore. Nowadays, too many musicians lip sync, don't play instruments, and don't write music.
