I deforked my OTA, sold the mount on Astromart last week and will never buy another fork mount again. I'll be buying a Paramount ME mount by the end of the year.
Over the course of a few years I'll eventually move to a PlaneWave or Alluna Optics Ritchey-Chretien telescope. At the moment I can't just jump up and spend $25,000 or more on a telescope. That will have to wait.......and it may or may never happen. Either way is okay I suppose.
Wish I could just find a hobby that isn't expensive.
It is a service provided by Dr. Clay Sherrod in Arkansas. Basically he cleans the gears, re-lubes them, adjusts backlash, cleans optics, collimates the optics, etc. Cost varies depending on the size. Typically a few hundred dollars.
Dobsonians are cheap, and high quality reflectors, but due to the construction of the mount, they are difficult to use to track objects. I personally prefer the German Equilateral mount, but to each his own.
The 12" was my first telescope...well first "serious" telescope. Sold in 98 :( but bought a nice 10" and had it super charged by Clay Sherrod a few years ago.
