Capoeira can work as a martial art, and you can fight against anybody, the thing is that you are not going to do any ginga in a real fight! (plus it dependes on the technique you have too, because many groups are not so focus on the fight, others are more involved on the floreios-acrobatics, or show style.)
depends on how fast you learn and how much you practice... batizados are held once a year or twice a year... the colour of the cord shouldn't be what you're worrying about though, I've seen plenty of people who have a 1st cord and play like a graduate
as far as i'm aware CDO in london have two a year... a few other schools do as well, although it's unlikely you'll move up a cord every six months... the higher you get the longer it takes, but then you can also skip cords as well
