  • Winfrey did not turn on Frey until people began to criticize her.

  • This woman is full of shit and is despicable liar just like the so called author she published. Oprah was right in taking this phony rip off to task. People bought the book thinking it was non fiction when it was pure fiction.

  • I don't understand why there has been so much made of this Frey and his book. Is it REALLY that big of a deal that he embellished on a few things? So what! It didn't affect the main story of the book and the message he was trying to convey.

  • @Moscato51 Yes it does. A memoir is non-fiction, not semi-non-fiction. No buts, no if's.

  • @blognewb a memoir means that the narrator is speaking from a first person limited view. Meaning that the narrator/writer can only tell you what they were thinking and what happened to them. There is no other side to the story...that sort of lends itself to fiction. I think the real problem here is readers not being able to take what they read with a grain of salt.

  • I think Oprah was angry that she was completely hoodwinked by James and his book that when she found out that not everything in it was true, she was infuriated and wanted blood

Oprah probably thought how could an intelligent, successful woman as her be so completely fooled and put a man and his book on national television and sing his praises only to be told it wasn't all true. It probably embarassed the hell out of her and she wanted James back on her show to exact revenge and rip him a new one

  • @JDubs878 Bitch showed her claws, her true self. She lives in a bubble and everybody around her live to feed her(cash cows) ego 24/7 so she have no touch with reality and even thinks she is capable to be a "teacher", LOL.

  • This speaker is the author, Joyce Carol Oates, NOT Nan Talese. The video a total voice over.

  • @Zebonka Last time I checked, Oprah wasn't the one who fabricated a book. I'm not a huge fan of Oprah, but if you think she's dumb and this publisher bitch isn't, you're just as stupid.

  • South Park (Towlie, Gary and Mingie episode) is a (no joke) PERFECT portrayal of exactly what happened and why and who did what to whome... It's funny (comedic), but the great thing about South Park, despite all the twistedness, it really is pretty much how this whole thing went done...It might have been a parody of this incident, but it's scary how LITTLE exaggeration was actually used.

  • Shame on Nan Talese. She has no integrity. She publishes a pack of lies and rather than apologize or hold her author accountable, she sits there making lame excuses and complains about a black woman's manners (implying that blacks are uncivilized savages). It's not the media's job to have manners you freaking idiot Nan Talese, it's there job to hold publishing hacks like you accountable for your gross incompetence and I'm glad that's what happened.

  • @zaxaphoned publishers are part of the media you tool

  • Still can stay I'm the one who set the mics, lights, truss, even the pipe n drape in the back, podium too. I've never cared a damn bout oprah though, lol

  • 2:29 sanctimoniousness ... is that a word?

  • Oprah's a dumb bitch.

  • Oprah is the biggest liar of them all.

  • Talese is a publisher, she published a book without doing her job of verifying it. Talese knew that if this book was made into a memoir it would sell more, she got greedy. Talese is just as guilty. Yes Oprah should have done more research on her part - but seriously she was taking the word of a well-known publishing house. Talese is the one who deceived the people and she needs to hold her self accountable for her own actions. It makes me question the other books she was the editor of now.

  • Nan Talese just admit you were betrayed by James Frey. At least Oprah had the courage & integrity to admit she was betrayed & had the intelligence to hold the author accountable by publicly spanking him & Nan on TV for an hour. Nan Talese is too much of a coward to admit she published lies and so instead defends a liar.

  • no publicity is bad publicity, its funny how even though the guy lied all of this media coverage just helped the sales of the book!!

  • This woman doesn't get it. What a cynic.

  • James Frey should have apologised to Oprah on one condition, that she apologises to America for all the fads and pseudo-scientific bollocks she's been promoting for years.

  • James Frey did what everyone else in the business of selling books does. You cannot tell me that an author with a bestselling memoir did not misconstrue a fact or description here or there to make it more appealing to readers. Frey just got caught and the only reason Oprah held that show was to make herself look good...

  • Comment removed

  • Oprah apologized to James Frey last week. as well she should

  • Oprah deserves a pulitzer prize for her confronting Frey & Nan Talese & verbally obliterating them. Not many broadcasters have the courage, brains or intergity to take full responsibiliy, admit & apologize for a mistake, & then hold liars accountable for misleader their viewership. And Oprah did it face to face, eye to eye, on live unedited TV. It doesn't get anymore honorable than that. Nan Talese is disgusting & needs to apologize for publishing a partly fictional book as a memoir.

  • Um... in case you haven't noticed, the media world went all to shit LONG ago. Every day we wake up, we are served a heaping helping of skewed facts and bullshit from people like Oprah Winfrey.

AND.. in case you really haven't noticed, the publishing world went down the toilet AGES ago. Crappy, dumbed-down, quick-read, airport-ready junk is now deemed "literature."

Today's books are FULL of cliched tripe. There's no sense attacking Frey. That's like attacking one mosquito to combat malaria...

  • I wouldnt say that Oprah attacked them. She just wanted a complete summary of why Frey fabricated some parts of his book to get social and literary recognition. It was upon her acceptance that his book was able to even have its own podium. I think she has done more for this book, even with being a critic of it and stating her opinion about the book whether it had been for or against, than the publishing company itself has done

  • A memoir is part of a genre known as creative non-fiction; where"little-white-lies"are almost inevitable when you're trying to recreate a scene that may have happened months/years/decades ago. But what frey did was to completely recreate episodes in his life to suite the story's purpose,to make himself appear as hewanted-not good. But how many people-including oprah-have told a flub about an event in their life to make theirself look different.Only diff for Frey is he had it published.

  • What James Frey did was unethical and him & Nan Talese deserved that spanking on live TV. If he wanted to include fiction he should have called it a novel based on a true story. A memoir implies that's how he remembers his experience & he has no memory of spending weeks in jail. Please don't lower the standards of publishing to defend sociopaths. His lies were unimportant but they are dishonest nonetheless. If he's a talented then it's all the more disgusting that he felt the need to lie.

  • Show me a non fiction book without lies and bias and I will show you a naive person. He exaggerated but did not deserve Oprahs self righteous bull. The book was great and an enjoyable read. He did lie and I am not condoning this but Oprah was full of shit. She lies all the time.

  • I thought it was brilliant the way Oprah dragged Frey & Nan back on live TV, confronted them face to face & beat the living crap out of them. It was the most brilliant public flogging in media history & liars deserve to be confronted. An absolute MASSACRE. Does Nan feel her & Frey are above being humiliated on daytime TV? It happens on Judge Judy all the time. And if Nan really doesn't know the difference between a memoir & a lie, she's a moron.

  • No, you're the moron...A memoir isn't 100% truth. Never has been. You telling me that that 900-pp. Clinton memoir didn't contain a single "variation of the facts", which is exactly how the president would describe it. And Oprah LIED to them to make this show happen.

  • Why is there no video of when Oprah confronted Frey?

  • I was just thinking that! I was looking for it all over the net and nothing. You think she's getting rid of all of them throghout the intarnets? O_O

  • thats what i was thinkin.

    she is insanely powerful

  • EXACTLY! It's insane! What Oprah did to James Frey was despicable. It was self-important. I watched it. And Oprah had all these daily exaggerators like Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd flaying him on air -- super-sanctimonious. Oh, and Rich and Dowd had books out competing with Frey's. And Oprah's fans are sycophantical morons. Just look at the way they wet themselves when she comes on stage. Fucking Pavlov's Cunts. Sorry, but they are. I only like Oprah for going after pedophiles.

  • What's wrong with being self-important & sanctimonious? Someone has to maintain what's left of our moral & ethical standards. You think it's okay for people to make money off of lies and flood honest people out of the market? I don't want to live in your world.

  • UM...wtf does being self-important & sanctimonious have to do with being moral and ethical? Sorry, that's a square peg in a round hole if I ever saw one. You must be one of those failed writers who writes only "truth". But badly. Hence failed. James Frey is a great writer regardless of the factual validity of his material. That's why he floods others out of the market. Memoirs aren't all truth. Oprah is a hypocritical phony. Period. She just didn't like being criticized in the papers.

  • thank you

  • yeah what gives ? is there anyway to see it ? I cant believe its not on youtube..

  • The South Park spook on this is fuckin hilarious.

  • oprah is a deceiving self-righteous narcissist who manipulates the masses. She doesn't really care about anyone but herself. When she realized she was made to look incompetent she freaked. She IS incompetent. Oprah winfrey is not Jesus Christ no matter how hard she is trying to make you think that.

  • She earns $385 million a year dominating the most competitive and improvisational field there is for a quarter century & has become the planet's most influential woman in the process. I wish I could be that incompetent. It's Nan Talese who can't admit incompetence as she still can't admit she published lies. Oprah admitted she was wrong, took 100% responsibility & demanded the truth & confront Nan & Frey face to face on live TV.

  • It was a lie nan talese in common letters. Lets face it, you were a dumb bitch. If you had apologised to the public as Oprah did, your self respect and the puclic respect would still be in tact. Even to this day, you are saying it is not a lie. Well i will be looking to see who the publisher is from now on before i buy that number 1 best seller, or any book for that matter. My respect for Oprah is still in tact a million times over!!

  • Nan Talese you're just jealous because Oprah had the courage, integrity, intellect & respect for her audience to confront a liar face to face on live TV & hold him & you accountable. Meanwhile you've been exposed as a corporate whore who spins like a bad politician & has no respect for truth & takes no responsibility for your failures.

  • I love it! James Frey thought he could lie to the soccer moms and get away with it, and Oprah grabbed him and his publisher by the ear, dragged them on live TV and beat the living crap out of both of them! You can fool some of the people some of the time, but if you fool us soccer moms, Oprah will kick your balls up to your eye balls.

  • I can't stand Oprah but I did gain a lot of respect her when she had the guts and smarts to confront both Frey and Nan Talese on live TV and hold them accountable. Oprah is wasting her talents as a talk show host, she'd make a great journalist. Talese is in way over her head as an editor; the woman's too incompetent to fact check, too dumb to differentiate fact and fiction, & is still in denial years later.

  • You must watch and enjoy FOX News.

  • If you google

"Clinton Deadline Looms for Recouping $11 Million Personal Loan"

You will see that if you vote Hillary. You are voting McCain.

  • How could Nan Talese be too dumb to realize she would be asked questions about the book when she went on the show? It's the job of the media to ask tough questions & it's the job of the publisher to fact check a book. And if James Frey is too much of a sissy to handle to a few tough questions on a ladies chat show, how does he expect us to believe he's the tough guy he describes in his books?

  • You also must watch FOX News.

  • Help end the war in Iraq, fix health care and increase the minimum wage. See my profile.

  • Call GOP contributor and war contractor General Electric Corporation at 800 386 1215 and tell the person, that you want the GE CEO to get Bush to end the war in Iraq and then Bush resign with Cheney and until that happens you will not buy any GE products and that you will tell your friends. Then call a local appliance store that sells GE products and tell the person you will not buy any GE products from their store until they can convince the GE CEO to convince George W Bush to end the war.

  • I don't understand what nan Talese is saying. That it's okay to lie to millions of people to make money? That the media has no right to ask tough questions and demand the truth? Talese is just trying to save face because she was exposed as a poor publisher. At least Oprah had the courage to admit she was wrong and to demand the truth face to face on live TV. I think the media & the publishing industry should be demanding higher standard for truth, not watering the standards down.

  • Geez the sun will always shine out of Oprah's arse to people like you eh vittykorn. Talese makes a very good point on Oprah's sickening 'holier than thou' disposition that airheads like yourself lap up.

Talese is well spoken and rational in a way that Oprah isn't. It would have been good if Oprah had have allowed reasonable discourse with her on the show, but, like Talese pointed out, all Oprah Winfrey cared about was protecting her image.

  • Talese isn't saying it's okay to lie, or that there shouldn't have been consequences for Frey's lack of veracity. I think she was alluding to the hypocrisy of Oprah claiming to care so much about truth and wanting to do a show on it but then ambushing her and Frey in a vitriolic, melodramatic and irrational manner.

And as for Talese being a poor publisher, yeah right. She's one of the most accomplished and successful out there who happened to believe an extremely convincing falsified memoir.

  • Nothing hypocritical, irrational, or vitriolic about Oprah asking tough questions. Do they think they are above being questioned? He just lied to millions of her viewers. Was Talese expecting to be served a cup of tea? Oprah had a responsibility to her audience, a concept Talese has no understanding of because she either has no respect for journalistic ethics or is too insecure to admit her mistakes. Oprah by contrast had the courage, integrity and intellect to rise to the occasion.

  • I disagree. Talese has no integrity. She wants to dance on the split of a hair about the definition of a memoir rather than have the honesty to admit she misclassified the book. Oprah's a straight shooter who can admit she made a mistake & had the courage to confront the people who lied to her on live TV. Talese is not rational, she's like a bad politician trying to rationalize her mistakes rather than taking responsibility for them. I can't respect her when she has no respect for the truth.

  • "Talese is just trying to save face because she was exposed as a poor publisher. At least Oprah had the courage to admit she was wrong and to demand the truth face to face on live TV."

Huh? The publisher was just doing her job. It was Oprah's endorsement, ya think she could have checked him out herself?

As for having the "courage" to admit she's wrong, one minute she's admitting her mistake, next minute she's blaming the entire publishing industry......gee real sincere.

  • well i guess this will only bothers you if oprah was/is your hero. listen, dont choose celebrities, people you know nothing about as your hero. your heroes should be you teacher, brother, sister friend, neighbor, TA.

  • "As for having the "courage" to admit she's wrong, one minute she's admitting her mistake, next minute she's blaming the entire publishing industry......gee real sincere."

Yeah but it takes even more courage to hold others accountable and confront them face to face. All Oprah did was ask tough questions in addition to taking personal responsibility and for that she deserves praise.

  • "Yeah but it takes even more courage to hold others accountable and confront them face to face. All Oprah did was ask tough questions in addition to taking personal responsibility and for that she deserves praise."

Tough questions - Yes ..... But she flat out blamed the publisher. Oprah is 100% responsible for endorsing that book to millions. She should have checked him out herself.

  • It's Nan's job to fact check the book, not the responsibility of a book club that wants to enjoy some afternoon reading. And Oprah did take 100% responsibility and admitted she was absolutely wrong. Nan on the other hand is still too intellectually dishonest and insecure to admit a mistake. She ends the video by saying it's not a lie. Oprah has moral, ethical, and intellectual integrity combined with the courage to look Frey & Nan in the eye on live TV and hold them accountable.

  • "It's Nan's job to fact check the book"

-This is not mandatory. Most publishers rely on the honesty of the Authors.

"Oprah did take 100% responsibility and admitted she was absolutely wrong."

-she admitted it was wrong for inferring on Larry King that it was ok for James to make alterations in the book. She didn't admit she was wrong for endorsing the book. She blamed that on the publisher.

  • I dont know... think he lied...she had the right to question him about it. Now, her methods were harsh but like Tyra said on her show, when you are a public figure and things go awry publically essentially reconciliation must be done publically.

  • Oprah: If I said G d Damn Rev. Wright's church and his people, even tho I would say something nice before and after this 'snippet', is it still right? DO YOU YOURSELF AGREE WITH REV. WRIGHT'S OBNOXIOUS AND OFFENSIVE DIALECT?

  • How REAL is Operah?

She should look at herself in the mirror and ask that.

Pretending to be 'the average women', but living in one of her many mansions with her butlers and fleet of cars, private jets.

I am yet to meet somebody who watches her show. I am however an Englishman living in Australia. Maybe its huge in the States.

Anyway. Its a great book. Fuck Oprah and her horse head!

  • i read the book it was a good STORY , but thats not the point. The point is that Oprah turned on the guy because she was afraid to loose her precious viewers, she didnt give a shit if the story was entirely true or not , what she cares more about are the opinions of the mindless drones that build her empire.

  • Frey lied to Oprah's viewers when he said his book was a memoir and she had every right to ask him tough questions. I wish more people in media would ask tough questions and hold liars accountable. Oprah deserves the pulitzer prize for demanding and getting the truth for her audience. Nan Talese deserved her grilling too because she did not do anything to verify the book's authenticity.

  • Yeah, why don't you give her the Nobel prize for physics while you're at it because, hey, she's Oprah.

Pullitzer is for WRITING. Did Oprah write? No.

  • Who cares if it's real or not, only those that made the mistake of sympathizing for James. So, I guess your tears were fake when you read his book. Oh, and by the way, it is real, it happens everyday. His book is very true.

  • This book was brilliantly written and a story that has inspired so many people. Frey never claimed he was writing the dictionary, he was trying to spread a message of hope and redemption in which he did so brilliantly. Oprah is not a journalist, she is a greedy woman who eats up attention, she should be ashamed in acting the way she did.

  • i will agree with you on the oprah comment. i think she's fake too. but his story being fabricated makes a mockery out of those who DID in fact experience things like that. whereas his experiences weren't entirely real. he didn't JUST stretch the truth, he MADE crap up. i agree with you on the message he spread. but he could of easily had done that by not labeling it a memoir. for that, he's a phony who wanted to make money and gain notoriety not much diff. than oprah.

  • james frey's book A Million Little Pieces" is a falsified account of some guys life. he lied flat out //// this lady is a moron... oprah did the right thing

  • i totally agree. he didn't claim it was a DICTIONARY MATERIAL... then it shouldn't of been in the AUTOBIOGRAPHY section of EVERY book store in america

  • I recently finished both of James Frey's books. Eventhough some of his experiences, in the book, may have been embellished, I appreciate everything he had to say. No one has the right to bash him for his work or his past life, especially Oprah. If one has a problem with the way the book is written, he/she doesn't have to spend their time reading it. The whole experience of writing both book has to have been somewhat theraputic for James, and I am really proud of him.

  • true that. also a book isn't about whether its true or not, a book isn't purpose to be true or false unless it's educational.

  • PSAV did a GREAT JOB there putting together the mics, the gobo lights, etc.......

    -arestus

  • Thank you Nan for coming forward and saying this. I haven't read James book but I can't be the only one who sees that Oprah is a disgustingly self serving and elitist hypocrite of the highest form.

  • Oprah WAS a sancitomonious bitch on the show with James Frey. She did everything Nan said in this video. She berated him and publicly humiliated him to satisfy her own ego and save face. It's a freaking book!!1

  • Oprah was just being a good journalist. I don't think asking a few tough questions of someone who lied to her viewers makes her a bitch. Male hosts like Tim Russert & Chris Mathews do it all the time.

  • Exactly Blackmangopit! I am reading this book at the moment and a friend clued me in to the so-called contraversy. It's a great book, well written and from the heart. I value the story itself and not the fact whether it's 'true' or not - as you said IT's JUST A BOOK!!!!

  • We have been controlled by the elite. The elite control the banking system, radio, tv,gov, and churches. They have taken our ability to question authority. We are more materialistic because of them. Why would they do this? -> They work for evil forces not wanting us to evolve spiritually. We will not take any material thing when we die, not even our skin color. Knowledge is power.

  • I can't belive Oprah did this. Most of his story was true, he only fabericated parts of it, he said in an interveiw, "My mistake is writing about the person I created in my mind to help me cope, and not the person who went through the experience." He has some of these experiances and Oprah's treatment is shameful.

  • SABOTAGE! Both Frey and Oprah are guilty. Oprah puts B/S artists on her show all the time! Winfrey was the talk show host that made a star of the Rich Dad/Poor Dad book - which was a fraudulent business book promoting multi-level marketing schemes. She does this all the time people!

  • WATCH AMER0

  • "its simply business".its simply fuckin bullshit, oprah winfrey is self righteous and for those poor poor people who think she did it because of her fans, she did it for ratings children.she did it for money.you think she cares?she cares about how big her wallet is.she verbally assaulted and tricked him while her fans defend her.its disgusting and she should be removed from TV for it

  • I see nothing wrong with Oprah asking a man who intentionally lied to her fans some tough questions. Oprah was just being a good journalist.

  • Oprah is fuck pig help Obama ass

  • Yes, Oprah is sexist....no surprise. She is one of the high priestesses of Feminism. But as long as she makes the big bucks by it, she will continue.

  • I agree with hkkorly

  • She is right Oprah should have stuck by her original opinion of the book... in the end it was a good book. but I guess she has to protect her image...and if so, how can we trust everything she says since she most likely says things people want to hear image...how do we know when she herself lies?

  • Oprah was correct to change her opinion in response to the outrage of her fans. Her fans are who made her famous, and if they felt betrayed by Frey and Talese, then it's great that Oprah dragged them back on her show for a full confession. I'm glad Oprah proved more loyal to her soccer mom fans than to the literary establishment.

  • I disagree with you. I believe she only did it to protect herself. I dont believe she shouldnt have dont it, asking them to come on the show. But by changing the way she views the book, is wrong. It shows she would go to any lengths to make the millions she does. Shes liked the books when everyone did, and now that everyone is saying its false so is she. Thats what she does. Who cares about her damn fans. She should believe what she believes. Not what everyone else does.

  • But Frey lied to Oprah and her fans. Oprah may not have been mad, but if her fans were mad, I'm glad Oprah had enough respect for her fans to demand an apology.

  • "He lied"

So the hell what? If Frey's book inspired some people, passed some people's time, or made his readers think, then who the hell cares if he told a completely harmless lie? Did he hurt anyone?

  • Creating a culture where truth is not valued does unmeasurable damage to the world, to democracy, to history and to knowledge of every kind. If we don't have truth, we don't have anything. It's great that Oprah disciplined both Frey and Nan Talese on live TV because it sent the message that the truth is one of our most cherished values.

  • I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you but most of what people believe to 'know' as history is not 'factual' it is distorted, fabricated, elaborated, and interpreted.

  • And that's because we live in a world that tolerates lies and fabrications. That's why what Oprah did was so great. Her fans demanded the truth and Oprah was brave enough to invite both Frey and his publisher on live TV and confront them with the tough questions.

  • And research this also:

"Re: Publisher Nan Talese's Remarks on Oprah Winfrey[Rate This!]"

  • And another thing, research this:

"Publisher Nan Talese's Remarks on Oprah Winfrey"

This, if you actually want a right to a valid opinion, instead of turning this discussion into a cheap highschool slambook.

  • If we're gonna nit & pick...

    - Projecting a sanctomonious image of one's self is a lie;

    - And having one's producers trick & intimidate people in a strategic manner is both a lie & clearly manipulative.

Conclusion: None of this matches the image that the Oprah Winfrey and the people associated with it promote.

  • F*ck James Fry, he's a dirty lier that used Oprah to get rich. His ass got caught in a lie, and as all bad boys, he needed to be outed.

  • I AGREE>>>>>>

  • whatever he lied.

  • Oh my...she really has aged.

  • Know this one? Unsensured: Johnny Hallyday Mon Fils. Superclip........Spookstad....Comment?

  • People are still talking about this incident? XD...Geez. I thought there were more important things going on in life, but I guess not. XD

  • Yes Nan you are right"it is business". It was business when you took Frey on as a client & did false labelling of the book it was business when you did not resist Oprah's bookclub announcement it was business when you agreed to appear on the show as truth expert and yes it is business when Oprah flipped the script. By defending Frey, Oprah had put her rep on the line & it is in her business interest to maintain her good rep. Last checked Harpo was a registered business. Stop tripping Nan

  • Yeah, it was like disgraced Christian comedian Mike Warnke's book "The Satan Seller", the supposed true story of his days as a Satanic high priest (claims long since debunked).

  • The problem is that Frey's lies were used to provide false hope to people like your son, to say nothing of those who tried Frey's "method" to get clean and ultimately failed, or worse, died of an OD after getting back into drugs.

  • Actually, Frey claimed to "stand behind my book and my life" and only admitted to "altering small details"...it wasn't until after the smackdown that notes from the publisher and Frey himself were added to subsequent copies of AMLP.

  • If it was truthful, why did John Dolan of eXile and The Smoking Gun quickly confirm his criminal record to have been greatly exaggerated? And since the most common oral anisthetic (lithadone) is non-narcotic and non addictive, it casts serious doubts on his claim to have endured back-to-back root canals w/out local anisthesia or pain meds.

  • What CNN liberal are you talking about, Glenn Beck or Lou Dobbs? LOL

  • Yeah, really...an Amazon reviewer of AMLP says he had a friend who tried Frey's "method" to get clean, but fell back into his old habits after just 3 mos before ultimately dying of an OD.

  • It wasn't just "a few white lies"...Frey tried to say his criminal history was just a "small part" of AMLP, but since that was all The Smoking Gun looked into (even before Oprah jumped in), it doesn't bode well for the rest of the book.

  • Not to mention sections of it were supposedly plagarized from the memoirs of a REAL addict, Eddie Little (Steel Toes and its sequel, Another Day in Paradise)...perhaps the title refers to the "debt" owed to Little by Frey? LOL

  • Indeed...I understand Frey initially tried to sell AMLP as the fiction that it was, but found no takers, prolly b/c as a work of fiction, it really had nothing to offer readers.

  • Yep...he merely came close to hitting a power pole after being asked to pull out of the "no parking zone" his car was stopped in and served only a few hours in the slammer before being released on bail...also, the arresting officer recalled him being "polite and cooperative" during the booking process.

  • Come again? She started as host of a local Baltimore talk show which actually beat then-ratings king Donahue, so I dunno where your claim's coming from...

  • That's "burqua"...and considering she's still the highest-rated syndicated talk show host on the air, I think you'd have a hard time proving those claims about her audience.

  • Something tells me Sidney Blumenthal and Danny Williams would disagree...

  • Actually James Frey's the one that sold Oprah and her readers out. There's no excuse for completely fabricating huge portions of his memoir. He could have called it a novel based on a true story but instead he chose to lie to increase sales. Oprah respected her audience enough to demand they get both the truth & an apology.

  • Actually some of his lies weren't even exposed until Oprah confronted him. Oprah felt especially betrayed when she found out he lied about Lilly hanging herself. You could see Oprah trying to fight back the tears when he confessed to that.

  • Yep...in fact, I doublt Lilly was even real...Frey claimed she actually died by slashing her wrists, yet nothing matching this revised suicide method could be found.

  • I think it took great courage and integrity of Oprah to admit she was wrong to defend Frey and to confront both him & his publisher on live TV. Nan Talese defends Frey only because she's embarassed to admit she published fiction as a memoir. You can always count on Oprah to keep it real.

  • oprah was sticking up for his lies on larry king live, until her fans reacted badly. she confronted him simply to save her own image.

  • A word to the wise.....OPRAH WINFREY IS AS PHONY AS THEY COME!

  • I think it's wonderful that Oprah listened to her angry fans rather than some deluded literary snob like Nan Talese. Frey was not the criminal he claimed to be but a well-to-do frat boy. Oprah was brilliant and brave to hold him and his publisher accountable and demand they face her audience and be honest. It was Oprah's finest hour.

  • oprah was sticking up for his lies on larry king live, until her fans reacted badly. she confronted him simply to save her own image.

  • When a male broadcaster asks tough questions and demands truth we call them a great journalist, but when a woman does it she's a bitch. Oprah had every right to be a bitch. Frey and his useless publisher misrepresented a work of fiction as a memoir. Oprah showed enormous courage, integrity, and intelligence by apologizing to her readers and then demanding the truth on live TV. Few people in media show so much respect for their audience.

  • ON THE NEXT OPRAH..im a bitch

  • Nan Talese is a moron. A memoir is supposed to be how an author remembers a period in his life not some lame attempt to totally rewrite to look tough. What's the point of an editor if she's just going to mindlessly publish whatever far-fetched manuscript she's sent with no fact checking or critical thought. And when her incompetence is exposed she vicously attacks the readers.

  • Actually Frey and Talese are the media whores. Frey could have called his book a novel based on a true story but by calling it a memoir he lied to millions of vulnerable drug addicts just so he could line in his pockets. Nan Talese would rather viscously attack Oprah than admit she's an incompetent editor who has moral or intellectual integrity. At least Oprah was loyal to her fans and was brave enough to demand the truth for them. Wish more media would do the same.

  • Oprah is lame, and a concubine to her ratings... she doesn't care about whether or not she thought the book was helpful/uplifting, she just wants people to keep wathcing her show... what a media whore

  • Oprah had every right to be tough on Nan Talese and Frey. Nan please learn basic fact checking skills. Bravo to Oprah for being secure enough to admit she was wrong to defend Frey, and for being brave enough to confront him and Nan on live TV, and demanding accountability for her fans. Nan, you come across as an insecure pseudo-intellectual when you try to redefine what a memoir is rather than simply apologizing for misclassifying Frey's book.

  • Nan Talese has always been an apologist throughout her career/life. Her own husband, writer Gay Talese wrote a book called "Thy Neighbor's Wife", basically detailing his extramarital affairs and hook-ups with hookers under the guise of "documenting the sexual revolution": basically considered his booty-calls "research". And Nan made excuses for him when friends told her to dump him. The book "What Wild Ecstasy: The Rise and Fall of the Sexual Revolution" discusses the whole thing.

  • Nan Talese is just mad that Oprah sided with the soccer moms of America instead of literary elites like Talese and Frey. Talese is so embarassed by her incompetence as an editor that she'd rather attack Oprah than admit she was duped. And what kind of moron thinks she's gona go on Oprah in the middle of the scandal and not be asked about it?

  • Oprah had every right to go after him

and Co. as much as she did.

    She was lied to, purposely!

Especially when this was a book that was suppossed to be all about his "life". Not a made for tv version of it!

  • Asking tough questions of a man who lied to millions of drug dealers is disgusting? If James Frey is too much of a sissy to answer a few tough questions on a ladies talk show, then he shouldn't have portrayed himself as a badass criminal tough guy in the first place.

  • Yeah, really...and given how frequently he mentions his fictitious addict GF "Lilly" in AMLP, as John Dolan pointed out in his review, "you begin to suspect she didn't exist, and was added to the text to neutralize the lifelong homosexual panic in which this belated Norman Mailer finds himself."

  • Oprah was wrong. what she did was disgusting!

  • She sold him out, and stabbed him in the back. Truly vile.

  • Im reading as we speak that Oprah Winfrey is the higest paid TV host in the world lol. She earned between june 2006 and june 2007 260 million dollars.. Number 2 on the list is Jerry Seinfeld with only 60 million a year

  • boo the fuck hoo lady...

  • James Frey stabbed Oprah in the back by not telling her his book contained lies, and she had every right to grill him on TV. The media should always hold people accountable for telling lies to their audience.

  • Of course, she was SUPPORTIVE of Frey's lies until her fans wanted blood for embellishments. She LOVED and still loves his book, and called in to defend Frey on Larry King Live.

Kind of funny, about how those who love The Truth put so much stock in Lies.

  • I like this person, quite a lot.

Oprah is an appalling woman and should be launched off into the sun.

  • I suggest Oprah's photo on a can of KIWI shoe polish alongside the photo of Obama her favorite American Negro leftists democrat!

  • GOD why did you make us Black and why do people HATE us!! What did we do to deserve negative comments, HATRED and treatment!!

  • What planet are you from?

Watch Jackie Mason on U Tube on Oprah and American Negroes it's very funny

Jackie is our favorite comedian from America

P/S I don't hate anyone except Mosquitoes & Snakes & we have plenty here!

  • Don't love people you don't know; TV is the last place where you'd get to see someone for what they truly are. It just doesen't work that way.
