With the new Nvidia Drivers Update not only you have to add you card in cuda_supported_cards.txt but also go to Nvidia Settings ->Manage 3D settings-> (select)Adobe Premiere->Multi-Display/ Mixed-GPU acceleration and set it to Compatibility Performance Mode! Other wise Adode will let you choose GPU acceleration but will NOT USE GPU ACCELERATION! What I have noticed when I run with GPU acceleration it creates files smaller.
@ectobuilder They are windows Gadgets. If you have windows vista or 7 they are free to download. "all CPU meter" and "GPU observer" are the ones I am using.
@F1shard hey F1, nice vid. have u tried loading more FX on the clips, u will get much higher GPU utilization the more fx u cram. I got around 95% gpu use with 3xHD clips and 15fx (5 on each) with 4 text layers. try it, it will really get that gpu pumpin'
Thank you for the proper comparison. I have a question regarding getting a gtx 260 or gtx 460. I have read that getting a card with ddr5 memory is crucial and that cards with ddr3 memory, such as the gtx 260, should be avoided. It seems like render times were ride on par with each other in your comparison but I really need the 260 for my hackintosh, the 460 is not really an option if I know correctly. Can you comment on this at all?
@tylers8600 I think it really comes down to what processor your matching with the graphics card. I get no increase in performace using the gtx 460 with gddr5 over the gtx 260 OC with the gddr3 memory. Now with a better cpu than a Q6600 at 2.75 ghz it may change that, but I'm not sure until I try it. I'm currently in the market for a new motherboard and CPU. When I upgrade my cpu I will post another video comparing the 2 cards again.
Very interesting since I'm about to upgrade my system, thanks for sharing. However, H264 encoding set aside, what kind of playback improvements do you experience with these 3 setups? I would hope for greater differance when decoding/editing with premiere than in the encoding phase you have just showed us. Any comments?
@KormenEBest I do notice a decent increase in playback while editing. But this is really only when I use GPU accellerated effects, ie. color correction, garbage mattes basic 3d cropping and so on. So lots of effects that you can just stack on without need for rendering. It's awesome.
@F1shard That sounds great! Thanks for your answer. I have my new system on the way and after that I'll upgrade to CS5 to fully utilize my new system. I opted for an i7 950 and 12GB of ram along with the GTX 470 since it's now officially supported by CS5.
@KormenEBest Very nice setup. I'm sure you'll love it. I'm also in the market for new Cpu, motherboard and ram. but I haven't decided what to get yet.
@pantiesfuck12 Ya it looks as though it would be a larger increase at first glance. That's mainly because times and percentages are deceptive, as minutes are in intervals of 60 and not 100. So you need to break things into seconds in order for it to make sense. The software only redering is 242 seconds, gpu is 156 seconds. thats a differance of 86 seconds. A savings of 1 min 26 seconds out of 4 min 2 seconds. In this format the 36% becomes more obvious.
@F1shard Also I'd like to point out that this 36% is only for rendering in H.264. When using other export options, especially AVI, I have found that up to 80% of my GPU is used and I get over 100% increase in render times. But I rarely use anything other than H.264 for exporting so it's never been beneficial for me.
@MrStevesays If you have a high end intel i7 I've read that you may see improvements with some rendering applications. But for the most part unless you are using a very high end PC, I just don't think its worth the extra money, but when it comes to gaming you will get better FPS with the 460 in most games.
I have a GT 220... moving to a asus gtx 460 1gb OC TOP directcu ( it's like a 560 ).... will give me any improvements?

Sweet...my gaming rig is now tax deductible! Im wondering if I'll see any benefits w/ SLI'd GTX460. Im running i7 w/ Intel SSD and 12GB of ram.

@V8toytruck I'm curious how SLI will perform. I'm currently running a GTX 570 and it's working great.

@F1shard SLI doesnt work =P

@V8toytruck Tax deductible? Loser. My rig is totally paid for by the government.

Well, Senor...Im sure it probably is, along with your food, healthcare, education. Good being an illegal isn't it?
V8toytruck 3 months ago
I doubt that the tax deductibility of your rig will make it any faster.

Have you texted GTX 460M mobile GPU?

Hey F1shard,
Which application were you using to capture the real-time RAM/CPU usage? And GPU usage?
