@deit08 You don't necessarily need a massive vertical to be a good high jumper. Biomechanically, the high jump is worlds apart from a standing, two footed vertical jump. Stefan Holm didn't need a big vertical, he jumped big heights because of his ability to convert outstanding run-up speed into lift, and his flop technique is as close as to perfection as you'll find. If you still don't believe me, search "Im Körper der Topathleten - Hochsprung Teil 2/5". Your proof is at 3:30 :)

@billhj2 Absolutely spot on billhj2. The high jump is basically a large 'step' into the air. Shorter athletes like Holm are velocity jumpers. I've seen gymnasts clear 8ft tumbling with a huge run up and finishing with a back summersault over the bar. However this would not qualify in the world of athletics as they are jumping with two feet. Standing vertical jumps bear no relevance to the high jump whatsoever. I cleared 2.15 when I competed and could not even slam dunk a basketball.
