@DarthMorius because originally vega was balrog, balrog was m. bison, & m. bison was vega. they deccided to switch up the names when it was ported to the US (mainly because having a big black boxer named micheal bison could've landed them in some hot water)

@DarthMorius Balrog is Vega's real name. He is called Balrog in the Japanese version. The boxer Balrog was really called M Bison in Japan. But they had to change the names around in the west in case Mike Tyson sued.

yep the reason they did that is because the M in

M.Bison meant Mike...which all together sounded like Mike Tyson. so to avoid getting sued the they switched the names around and now in the American version the M in M.Bison stands for Major.
