@NastiestOfAllParks Sometimes their poop does look white in color, but if you see something as thick as what's in the video, segmented, or with a round head, it's definitely not poop.
Looking again at this video I still can't believe how much trouble these things caused. They would just keep reproducing after treatment, in a matter of days. When I emptied the tank I found some swimming in the sand, too. Those could have been planaria, I'm not sure, but these /\ were definitely parasitic. They would slowly starve any fish that came in contact with the tank in a matter of months. Eventually they would leave the host fish, and the host fish would die a couple days later.
dude i had one in a ghost shrimp a long time ago. it wiggled itself out and i caught it with a net. i kept it alive in a cup of fresca just to show my parents. so far no deaths or anything but now i really want to buy some of those jungle tablets
If your fish are doing ok, the worms may not be parasitic. Some can live in the fish's gut for years without any damage. The jungle parasite tabs aren't very strong anyways
Your video is a good example of what fish keepers should look for to see their fish are infested with Camallanus Nematodes. The long string following the guppy is the mucus produced by the inflamed intestine of the infested fish. The real problem is the small red protrusion from the fish's anus. Those are female Camallanus Nematodes that are causing the irritation. Likely all the fish in the tank were infested and sooner or later would have died.
Makes me even surer. Planaria hides in your gravel, devouring the uneaten food yo put (in other words they help you with your overfeeding). Once you wiped them out, the uneaten food accumulated unseen and rotted, releasing ammonia, thus killing your fish. Just a theory
@blownable That is possible, but I didn't feed them very much to begin with, since their poop made my sand look dirty. I also siphoned every weekend because of the waste. The worms were living inside of the fish, and only came out once they were dead (the worms). They definitely had some negative effect on the fishes behavior.
man that looks bad! by the way what are the symptoms? do you know about a disease/parasite that makes your fish float, not eat, rarely move but yet still alive? Thanks if u do!
Symptoms are 'flashing', gasping for air, rapid breathing, losing color, not eating, and long stringy poop. Floating at the surface is a sign of fatigue. Some fish float at the surface when they are sleeping.
those lil fawkers fogged up the tank..over night...the filter would be to strong..so i leave the tank with no air or filter on..unless it gets reall dirty...
Yeah, thankfully they were just cheap guppies. I am happy they are gone because my sand would always be covered with green poop every week between siphonings.
It looks like A camallanus worm. I get this sometimes when I get new fish and the can get an infection with these worms. Sometimes it could be from to much dred-freez food or frozen foods, live foods or gravel not cleaned good. Hope this helps
I think I got it from that plant. Whatever it was, it doesn't matter now as I have emptied my tank. I decided it was the only option, because I tried 3 different meds in 3 weeks, but the worms were multiplying too fast.
Good choice. It sounds that your worms were breeding in your gravel and these meds dont always work but make things worse. Next or when ready to turn on tank again. Clean your holde tank and Remove and clean your gravel very good. Best way to clean and kill all your worms is by putting the gravel outdoos and let the sun kill the worms. Becareful with live plants most often they will introduce certain worms.
Thanks for the advice, next time I will bleach the plants before putting them in. And you are right I saw hundreds of tiny white worms swimming around once I started removing the sand. It is currently drying in the sun, along with all my other ornaments. Thanks for you concern and hopefully I will rebuild the tank soon.
Don't worry, I use a very diluted solution. 1 part bleach to about 20 parts water. Then I soak it in clean water with a de-chlorinating solution. I've done this with my ornaments several times, and none of my fish have die because of that.
I've always thought it was just shit...

@EmperorBenzRx8
From petsmart or petco or something. Their tank conditions are crap anyways, they probably would not realize that this is abnormal.

Possible its just planaria
blownable 2 years ago
Could be... My fish only started dying once I treated them. It was like once the worms died they died too.

Then perhaps the medication you used overworked its magic. Instead of just the worms, it took out your fishes as well

dont mix these with planaria,,there different

If it is clear and long you can bet there is something wrong with their digestive system.

Never bleach on your oraments or plants it can kill your fish. Use very hot water its more safer and kills any worms or parasites very fast.

It indeed's the same problem as with my now dead guppy. And thanks for the info. I'll remember the advice when we decide to have fishes again. =)
