I think it's best to keep Lava Man in retirement, because, and oh gosh, I hate to think negative here, but I don't want to see another return-to-racing tragedy similar to that of George Washington ;(
i will never forget the time when i was wacjing the Santa Anita handy cap right next to the finish line... i was soo happy to see him win i won $750!!!! but the next race he came in last. :(
Lava Man has always been one of my favorites,,I have never missed watching a race he has run in...
I knew they would retire him soon,I am a little sad I wont see him run again, but so thankful his connections did right by him and retired him sound and healthy.
I am sure he will make a great lead pony,,he wont be racing, but he will still hear the roar of the croud when they see him on the track.
Enjoy your retirement Lava Man,,you so deserve it..thanks Carley,,for another great video...
Thanks. Lava Man is a true warrior and a definite fan favorite. No older horse/handicap horse ever accomplished more. Seabiscuit? Swaps? Native Diver?Ancient Title? Affirmed?Spectacular Bid?John Henry?Alysheba?Best Pal? Nope, none accomplished as much in handicap dirt races as Lava Man. Two years he swept the Big Cap-Gold Cup, and in 06' threw in the Pacific Classic. He was the 1st horse to win grade I races on dirt, turf, and synthetics. And 3 Gold Cups!He dominated these races like no other.
i dont know if you saw this years gold cup, but watch the entire stretch run. corey nakatani is such a cocky bastard he didnt hit lava man with the whip... or even show it to him. win a million dollar race by a nose under a hand ride? there's a reason he makes it to the horse of the year ballot
Lava Man was at my house for a bit(:

@lengua92 Yes he did! Best rags to riches story I've ever witnessed in the thoroughbred racing industry.

Grade I winner on dirt, turf, and artificial surfaces. Not too shabby. So he can't ship -- we're happy he's all ours here in California!

dont forget he's a winner off the pace or setting it not to mention his owners claimed him for 50,000 and he's made 4mil+ since
