This is one of my favorite pieces by them. The interaction between Holland and Abercrombie in the latter part of the song on a higher level. They have great chops but that isn't the real reason they are great collective improvisors. Dejohnette is just absolutely orchestral even as he rocks your socks off. And by the way, without even intending to this group wrote the book on jamming as a jazz rock trio. All the young wannabes should have a listen.
Heard this song live at the Blue Note in '94. Bought the CD recently and didn't realize that the song I heard was called Back Woods Song. Love John's wavy feel throughout, Holland's wonderful stand up bass lines, and of course, my man Jack on traps! Gateway!
I bought this on vinyl, and think it was one of the most innovative albums of the 70's. I would best describe John's style here as 'slithering' all over the guitar, with that excellent foundation laid down by Jack D and Dave H.
Just when you think it's gone totally out, they stitch it all together. Yes, the head is catchy, and yes it will stay in your mind for long periods. Never heard anything like it before, and haven't since.
ha, me too... couldn't get this out of my head for several days after hearing it the first time... especially dave's little solo break in the middle...
one of my favorite bands , iv heard the gateway 2 and in the moment and i think that abercrombie is great , there isnt an abercrombie album that i dislike , same to jack and dave , just amzing and always putting the art in the first place . Tanx for this .
Las fotografías son mucho más recientes. De los años 90, al menos.

To me it's like this group and Bass Desires are this unique type of appendage jazz unto itself.....that doesn't need its own genre name.

Looks like all the Gateway fans are coming out of the woodwork. I thought I was the only nerd back in the eighties who liked this stuff.
