No it's not stock, but yes the suspensions improvements were all implemented in the 2011 STI. And with a turboback exhaust, quality intake, and a good tune a US STI will put out more than 320BHP. Yes the 8k redline might sound nice but the broader torque range of the 2.5L is also quite nice.
ummmm im sure this has been mentioned, but fanboys, from the articles online...the is FAR from a stock STi....and that's why nurburgring wont acknowledge it as official....just Google nurburgring times and you'll see that the STi's time isn't on any of the pages...sorry guys =/
@GTO19020 it is a stock sti..nurbugring wont acknowledge it as official because when they did the lap the car was still a prototype and wasnt in production yet..but the production model is exact the same car..wich was the last test/prototype car that subaru produced before the car went to mass production..yes, the car we buy is the same..but yes, you are also right to say that the lap wasnt recognized because the car was still a proto back in the time
@Driftuner im rlly not tryin to be a prick ( i rlly like the new STi) but if you read articles online, you will notice suspension mods and the big one was a boost upgrade....which are not stock on the new STi ...sorry =/
@Driftuner You are right about it being a prototype and not recognized because of that. The version Makkinen was helping research and development is the current production Japanese Subaru STI spec C version. North America woudnt have this verion and they both differ quite a alot. However during the prototype phase, there are modifications that woudnt exsist on production vehicle. Some of it are the undertray and gurney on the wing that adds more downforce on top of the spec C.
@AtomicSphere Spec C has 6 pot front calipers, 2.0L twin scroll turbo, slightly different stabalizer bar size.
North America's STI is 4 pot front calipers, 2.5L non twin scroll turbo, engine is known to be tuned running leaner than it should be.
Pillow ball joints are one of the improvements made to North America's 2011 STI however Japan 2007 Spec C's already utilized it, its just that it wasnt implemented into North America STI (and possibly japan) till now. There is soo much more
Can someone explain why they started the clock right before the first corner (going to the left on a downhill), but they stopped the clock right after the right hand corner at the end?
Common people, it takes 30 seconds to do a little research on the specs for this car. It's suprising less modified than most of you are thinking. Only +15 hp, and the suspension is the same as the 2011 production model. The othe minor mods are from limited edition japanses version like the Spec-C and R205, so in that regard it's just a frankenstein production car. Nothing that has been done too this car that is drastic or beyond what the average person who owns one could easily do themselves.
@Bones12x2 Don't forget the 2.0 liter JDM motor!! I would say that's a pretty big difference! Much better motor than the USDM 2.5 piece of shit/ ringland blowing motor!! LoL!!! Say what u will, but it still is far from a stock STI!! Undertray, etc.

So the record breaking sti I assume is the Japanese spec? The one with the high revving EJ20? Can't really see the tech, but he seems to be shifting at 7k anyways... a little confused.
@ykei i would guess it is due to the fact it is right hand drive and plus its still just a little bit faster. hell it beat the cts-v thats a 63,000$ and a ugly one at that. not saying the sti is gorgeous but its fast as shit and i'm gonna buy one of these in the next 2 months. evos just got killed
@ykei wait you can't see the tach, yet the telemetry takes up the bottom left 20% of the screen? but yeah hes shifting at about 7k. also yeah i beleive this is the jdm spec C 2011 sti.
Hi;-) Are you against under steering?! You're right there is a bit ... well known with an impreza. If I give you the same car with another setup (oversteering), do you believe you will drive faster?? The aswer is no ! But too much understeering is not good for sure, but is easier to drive and more secure. The good thing is that is that you can "enrol" a impreza really good if you drive it a bit harder (stronger turn in), then use the traction of the 4x4 helps to go out from the apex!

love this driver love subaru, very nice video and this is track on need for speed track right? i think i have an video i driving sti on the game on this track, and its the same time i am a good driver hh here is the video
@akotr3mor Lol I know what double clutching is thanks but hey if you heard cog-grind I guess I need my hearing checked as all I heard was the revs shoot up on a change...inconsistent with the rest of his changes, clearly a missed gear, the double clutch comment was merely a joke. *rolls eyes*
Interesting to watch a rally driver racing on bitumen. According to "textbook" racing technique he's doing everything wrong, i.e shuffling hands around the wheel, unsettling the car under brakes, see-sawing the wheel mid-corner...but damn, you can't argue with the obvious pace and the final time.
@Whitebread009 he's doing that to induce more neutrality with AWD. yank it into the corners, sharp and hard cornering to negate understeer. wake up mr. pro.
@UpstateEG51 just proves how long subaru motors are suffering a misshifting and grind that bad yet still completeing the nurburgring at 100% to finish with the best time ever for an STI right?
Definitely sounds like a Mitsubishi motor. Where's that characteristic sound? And it's not like he's running cat-less. They tested the time with a car that's "supposed" be in stock form, am I right? Shit sounds nasty to me. No growl.
@UpstateEG51 its called equal length headers for the JDM 2 liters they get in japan noob. In the USA don't worry, they'll still all have boxer rumbles with unequal length headers and 2.5Liters.
@UpstateEG51 the unequal length headers are what give it and bring out the distinctive boxer rumble. even with equal length headers the engine still sounds worlds smoother and better than an evo.
I find his driving style unsuitable for the track... constant drive alteration common for rally drivers, but unnecessary, so as trying to induce slide feel like he is driving on gravel. Shit man shit! And where are heel-toe downshifts? I guess there is plenty of drivers who can do it better... Tommy stay on gravel! (or retire)
@KuostA its not only my opinion. And however you have given me nice nick i still know what i am talking about... I drive too and know definitely that his driving style is not quickest
@fakuoka its called equal length headers for the JDM 2 liters they get in japan noob. In the USA don't worry, they'll still all have boxer rumbles with unequal length headers and 2.5Liters.
Looks like during downshifting, he would brake, clutch in,downshift, clutch out.The green bar (accelerator position) does not blip.I guess its faster to downshift this way and the engine being dragged up after clutch out will further brake the car. More synchro&clutch wear?It may not be that destabilising to have the engine be dragged up if you are still braking and with the car and steering somewhat pointed more or less straight.(I feel that under braking, the car is stabilised somewhat)
@vietboitj How can you possibly tell with that camera angle? You generally blip the throttle with the outer edge of your foot and it is relatively subtle, especially with the close spacing of the pedals on a STI.
If he wasn't using heel-and-toe on the downshift, he'd be upsetting the car's balance, which I doubt he'd be doing at 160+ km/h. Tommi knows what he is doing.
@Digitalfiendscom im not going to argue with you...because you obviously know what youre talking about... but i just based my accusation on the little display of the brake and throttle... but yea.. i agree... heel-toe is very subtle..and im sure its second nature to Tommi.. so i recant what i said earlier.
@readyfe There is no real need to double clutch a gearbox with synchros. Sure it might help reduce wear on a dedicated track car doing time trial after time trial, but it's unlikely they are concerned about gearbox/synchro longevity here. :)
The "G" sensor when accelerating will move backwards, because that is where the G forces are.. I am a Subaru fan but this is just disappointing, 16 years of extra development, running a car that Subaru admit is not stock, with better tyres and more horsepower with an extra gear, and still only 4 seconds quicker than the R33 GTR from 1995
That's a stupid argument. That's like saying the R33 GTR from 1995 is slower than the 1965 Plymouth Satellite 426, even though Nissan had 30 years to catch up. I guess the 95 GTR is "just disappointing" then, huh?
Oh yeah, and the GTR cost $45,000 in 1995 money, while the STI costs $34,000 in 2010 money. Think about it.
I really like the map and track section descriptions in this, too bad the weather is so damn dreary.
That blown shift @ the beginning made me wince, he must be more used to a LHD I guess. I hope he comes back with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ-400 next time. I really, really hope Walter Röhrl takes a stab @ the "schleife" with an Audi R8 GT (2011).
@speckfisher425 your right, i checked my uncles Sti, I asked him about it and he said it's extremely easy to miss 4th, and takes time to get used to, now i have a proper source of info
@Mecka20000 Why rev the engine to redline if it's not making any power there? Chances are that he knows the engines powerband and his shifting is to keep the engine within the powerband.
is this a sedan?

Looks like during downshifting, he would brake, clutch in,downshift, clutch out.The green bar (accelerator position) does not blip.I guess its faster to downshift this way and the engine being dragged up after clutch out will further brake the car. More synchro&clutch wear?It may not be that destabilising to have the engine be dragged up if you are still braking and with the car and steering somewhat pointed more or less straight.(I feel that under braking, the car is stabilised somewhat)
skybluealfa 1 year ago
hmmm.. he doesn't heel-toe when he downshifts at corners... i guess he never heard of tsuchiya
vietboitj 1 year ago
@vietboitj How can you possibly tell with that camera angle? You generally blip the throttle with the outer edge of your foot and it is relatively subtle, especially with the close spacing of the pedals on a STI.
If he wasn't using heel-and-toe on the downshift, he'd be upsetting the car's balance, which I doubt he'd be doing at 160+ km/h. Tommi knows what he is doing.
Digitalfiendscom 1 year ago
@Digitalfiendscom im not going to argue with you...because you obviously know what youre talking about... but i just based my accusation on the little display of the brake and throttle... but yea.. i agree... heel-toe is very subtle..and im sure its second nature to Tommi.. so i recant what i said earlier.

1:34, down gear, 9K rpm!!! Do that in a OEM Subaru and your heads will blow in thousand pieces...
chriskart09 1 year ago
@chriskart09 This is the 2L with an 8K redline. I doubt a misshift to just under 9K would kill it. Yes, it would likely destroy a 2.5L though.
Digitalfiendscom 1 year ago
that is true rally drivers are the best. but i would drive like a maniac too if it wasn't my car and didn't care if it crashed.. lol
sly24k 1 year ago
I noticed he never doubled clutched when going down in gears ? Is this not the norm with rally/track drivers ?
readyfe 1 year ago
@readyfe There is no real need to double clutch a gearbox with synchros. Sure it might help reduce wear on a dedicated track car doing time trial after time trial, but it's unlikely they are concerned about gearbox/synchro longevity here. :)

The "G" sensor when accelerating will move backwards, because that is where the G forces are.. I am a Subaru fan but this is just disappointing, 16 years of extra development, running a car that Subaru admit is not stock, with better tyres and more horsepower with an extra gear, and still only 4 seconds quicker than the R33 GTR from 1995
lozzaian8383 1 year ago
@lozzaian8383

Way to hop those Nordschleife curbs Tommi!

It wasn't intentional, I have an '08 sti and it is very easy to miss 4th. It's a tight gearbox and it happens to me regularly.
speckfisher425 1 year ago
@speckfisher425 your right, i checked my uncles Sti, I asked him about it and he said it's extremely easy to miss 4th, and takes time to get used to, now i have a proper source of info
TheBladeofaDemon 1 year ago
@TheBladeofaDemon actually it is much easier to miss the 3rd ))) (drive an STi myself))

@Mecka20000 Why rev the engine to redline if it's not making any power there? Chances are that he knows the engines powerband and his shifting is to keep the engine within the powerband.
Horsepower doesn't kill engines, RPMs do.
