WOW, she's standing there, the performance as bad as possible and then there comes such a voice out of her mouth! One of the better versions of this aria...
She was fantastic! However the production was terrible: Instead of the Queen of the Night being furiously terrifying like she should be, it just seemed as though she was giving her daughter a good talking to.
I'm rather disappointed that she doesn't even attempt to act this, but she sings it quite well. Seems like she's better suited to the concert hall than the stage, though.
@1violaplayr :The story with this performance,is that it is 1971 & the recording was with a stationery overhead microphone. The TV show director has said can you keep perfectly still when delivering the aria so we capture the perfection of your voice...and she did stand still & they did capture the sound in this recording as good as good as you can-predigital,live performing days!!!
She dropped the role in 1971 or 1972 (not completely sure). Anyhow her last performance of this role was at the Hamburg opera in Germany. After these last performances a video was made (Studio) of the production (derecter by Peter Ustinov).
She stopped because she found that it was a torture to be spending most of her time bored to death in the dressing room.
In 1984 however she proved that she was still able to sing the music by singing 'Der Hölle Rache' in concert.
@RedrosessNL Yes she stopped singing because of heartproblems. But that was long after she stopped singing the Queen of Night. As I pointed out she was still singing in 1984 (when she performed 'Der Hölle Rache' as an 'Encore' during a Concert in Utrecht (The Netherlands).
@duchesseofdevon :Duchess, I think you mean coloratura! You need to go to a good dictionary and no, I meant yodelling!!Some called it the hen cackle noise-a unique Deutekom approach. Some like it, I find it most irritating.
@duchesseofdevon :This was 1970. Cristina didnt move because there was a stationary mic.She does have a strong, clear voice. The newer renditions of QON by Damrau, Mosuc, Miklosa show more signs of life. Perhaps this is a reflection of technology ie the acting and singing can be recorded better.
you may call it yodelling , but i call it some of the most extraordinary sounds , mesmerising from the human throat that i have ever heard and totally addictive, i just keep repeating it , i cant get enough and only madame Deutekom sings it like that BBBBBBrrrraaaaavo!!!!
I got an idea that back in 1971, she recorded this with an old fashioned stationery overhead mike and thus couldnt move much!! Great voice-not a big fan of the yodelling, yet overall, of the last 50 years, she is one of the best!!!!
I agree with KOKAYT1: she's not an actress. Instead, she is an un-be-lie-va-ble singer! She HAS to relax her face, or she wouldn't be able to hit those notes. This is one of the hardest songs ever written. Whoah! She is amazing.
She has a great timbre for the role...very cutting and dramatic. But her Fs are flat (sorry, but they are!) and the gobbling of the triplets is just odd.
the definition of a singing actress is here...the size/attack creates this incredibly predatory effect, like the nagging evil presence that wont go away. No need for summersaults, puppets, stealing batons from conductors, acting like its all about you...etc. Deutekom enters the stage, opens her mouth, and creates. The voice does it all, and that is what a SINGING ACTRESS is supposed to do: make you see them with your ears.
What a powerful and crystalclear performance of this great Dutch soprano. Her German is perfect but that is not surprising when Dutch is your native language.
Maybe I'm wrong but I have the feeling it's a little bit slow... but it's a great version and I prefer this to Damrau version. But the best Queen of th Night is Edda Moser.
Try to find a better record. This one seems to be recorded by VHS, then transacoded to PC, compressed, recompressed by youtube, so both audio and video are affected. Her technique is specific, but it really sounds better in other records.
it is a role fitted for her, she's somewhat always in right tempo. perhaps the voice it somewhat "flat", and lacks some verve, but overall it is great
Her voice technically is totally perfect for this role (And this aria in particular) But her stage presence is lackluster compared to Damrau or Moser!
@KOKAYT1 I think it's difficult to judge acting skills based on this single clip. This was staged for filming, not a live audience. Clearly, the director controlled the staging, and wanted her (for whatever reason) to remain stationary while the camera moved around the performers.
I LOVE HER SHE'S MY OPER IDLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE PRONUNCIATIONS IN THE WORDS!! WHES SHE YODELS THE TRIPLETS I LOVED IT IT WAS DIFFERENT VERY ORIGINAL! I wish she hadn't died or did she im not sure though. anyway best one on youtube besides edda moser's vid which was awesome too!!!
Deutekom was in her primes when she made this opera film. It's a pity that she did not make more opera films like this. What a unique voice she possessed!
I must say She is the best "Queen of the night" in opera history so far. No one thesedays sing the queen's aria so powerfully with superve technique. She has a perfect voice for the queen. Some of them criticised her acting but we all know that great singers in her era didn't act very well except Maria Calas and few others. Acting was not the principal things that time, unlike thesedays when opera singers should be talented in both acting and singing.
I dont like yodel in Opera. It is a pitty that Ms. Deutekom never tried to get rid of that way of singing. She had quite some drama in her voice a wide vocal range. Though her voice lacs the warmth. 3/3
She has always sounded rather strange to me when she sings this aria. She tries to hide the fact she has no trill by making that ghastly sound at 1:55. 3/1.

She has a really nice trill, actually. The notes you are talking about are triplets... Even singers with good trills mess up the triplets sometimes!!!
