  • Holy CRAP, have a little bass with treble on you tone there, bass man.Awesome playing, though. Drummers a little pushy, bet it all gets settled.

  • someone get him some brushes!!! xD i love this song :P

  • guitarist is SUCH a show off

  • OMG acoustics in that gym are horrible

  • yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh boi

  • i love the ad libs this is cool i wish the jazz band at my school was this good i paly the set

  • y fleugal horn?

  • @alcgda y not?

  • @alcgda it has a warmer sound than a trumpet. That, and it's just cool.

  • i love this song lol u guys did good especially the sax. player i play the saxophone too i love it. u just want to find the sheet music to this song that would be great.

  • Looks like you guys had fun doing that talent show. Not much funk, most of the guys played it straight. You may want to check out how a big band really brought the funk on this piece for 16 minutes with an amazing drum solo. I had to split it for youtube.

  • accually it's considered funky jazz

  • VERY cool! This sounded great. I love how you improvised a little bit at certain points - it's not the same as how you hear it on the actual LP but that's oneof the cool things about playing this live - you can interpret it in different ways and do your own thing with it

  • I m playing this song in my jazz band at school i like our version better though good song good band

  • Don't listen to any of them. A good die-hard tune and you did it justice. That's the main thang. I enjoyed the guitar solo - not too much, not too little. And you guys kept the 'understated' thang of it together. If my senior students do this, I'm rapt!! Go on funkin'.... : )

  • Don't listen to the cat who dissed the drummer. Your drummer is fierce and laying down a nice pocket. Keyboardist needs to learn some comps; listen to Herbie on the original. Guitarist:listen to the original where Herbie uses the clavinet like a guitar. Nice bluesy solo! Sax solo: learn your pentatonic scales and melodic/harmonic minor scales. Drummer-----listen to some David Garibaldi and Dennis Chambers for some drum solo ideas. Steve Gadd, too. Nice effort, guys!

  • nive play, but work on your horns section, they play slightly too fast in the beginning. And for the solo's: build up a bit the background during the solo, keep it simple in the beginning and go crazy all together in the end, not only the one doing the solo. And sax solo was a big brawl of notes, whithout making any sense, and with almost no feeling for the rhythm. The rest was quite nice.

  • Comment removed

  • well done. tell drummer to lay off the coffee.

  • why are the horn players so far apart from the rhythm section?

  • A really cool song from a really cool band... Congratulations, folks!

  • yeah i fiqued it out its easy great job though

  • To The Sax: try to avoid to much staccato and do something with your intonation

guitar solo rocks --> like it

  • your bass player sounds awful. it sounds like its his bass's fault though

  • guitar play was awesome. ur winds were kinda sucky tho.

  • great job im doing it for an for an esemble concert on tenor sax with my freindsdo u know part b for tenor sax thats the only part i need to know text me back thanks great job

  • listen it out

  • Sounds goooooood :D

  • so cute

  • OW!!!! Funkaaaaaay!

    Somewhere, James Brown is smiling.

  • really nice

we've played it in our band too.

I'll upload a video if I can get one ;)

  • coordinate outfits better or something. and lose the music stands its one chord haha

  • that drummer sucked

  • Yeah, he needed to learn the piece a bit better, it feels like there's something missing.

  • nice job

  • great cover, probably the best i've heard for a school talent show

  • Alto's an interesting choice for this song, but it works.

  • Damn, nice guitarist ;).

The bass-player must have been really bored.. Playing the same riff for nine minutes :S. He had no variation, and no solo! What a bummer...

Part from that, extremely well done ;)

  • the point of the BASS is to keep it solid. The bassist keeps time, not the drummer. A real jazz bassist will play the same riff for HOURS. Plus, you don't need variation in chameleon. The bass part is dirty as is xD.

  • Actually i would have to disagree a slight bit.. True bass keeps time but he would follow the drummer! Now im sayin this from a general perspective and in my own expeirencebut usually the drummer has the main sense of time. Its the 1st a drummer learns is to keep time at a steady tempo! Now for the bassline the strongly backs the drums and together they provide the whole backline of the band! just my thoughts.. =)

Really good cover too btw, Solid through out! =)

  • very true in most traditional music, however, jazz seems to follow a different set of rules. My director stresses that the bass sets the tempo. when the band gets out of time it's the bass' job to bring it back in. the drummer does have to good time BUT the band is centered around the bass believe it or not. Im not disregarding your opinion in any way, you could be completely correct, this is just what i was taught- of course my j-band director is a looney...

    nevertheless.. keep playing holmes

  • i can keep playing this bassline for hours and hours:)

  • this is SEXY

my bands going to cover this, bass, guitar, keyboard, and drums, we might need a subsititute horn player of some sort

  • they should have harmonized the horns, its played somewhat right, needs to be jazzed up.

  • that guitar solo was so sexy

  • lol would everyone stop calling it a trumpet? it is a FLUGEL HORN!

  • thank you, i was tired of saying that

  • sax solo sorta wack

  • GREAT JOB !

  • The hi-hat was played way to straight. This is jazz. Trumpet player should have added higher notes in the end, but this was great.

  • That is a solid groove, and that's how its played on the album. I love that first snare syncopation.

  • Actually, it is funk, not jazz.

  • Actually, it is jazzfunk, not funk

  • Actually it's acid jazz. The Herbinator is a master of the music. ;)

  • @keilwerth29 Jazz funk actually :D

  • LOL he started palying with his teeth lol

  • no bass solo??

not even a nice little 20 second fill?

    not even

  • bass solo? lulululul.

  • ey man fuck you. bass needs to be respected ;P. maybe he aint good at improving. we wont ever no why he never had a solo

  • you guys play good....specially in the solos...the drummer needed to play soft during the solos..

  • Hey, this took me back 40 years. I really enjoyed it. You are good enough to play the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival. I would go to a jazz club and pay to see you any day. Keep up the good work. I expect to hear great things about you in the future.

  • guitarist is DANK

    drummer too

  • Ooh...I like it...the bass is great. :D I love the piece...they're playing it very great..

  • Correct me if im wrong but it sounds like they have some good tone besides that crack in the trumpet in like 2:25 -_-

  • I would say they all had good tone, however i think they all approached it in their own way stylistically. The rhythm section were going for more of a rock sound. While the trumpet was a little more of a smooth Jazz sound (although not a super great one) The sax tone was the weakest he needed to open up his tone. So it felt a little weird in contrast to each other

  • I think this version of chameleon was great, I`ve played this tune many times in several bands, I love the song, and you are not bad

    keep up the good work:D

  • i like the way of this band ;and i say good luck to them ...nice ;very nice

  • These guys aren't bad at all. Of course a few minor things to work on, but this is still good stuff. Continue to work and you guys will be freaking awesome.

  • what the fuck is everyone dissing this band for? I think it sounded great, I wish i was there. I know from experience that a band needs encouragement, not paying out, from their audience, to benifit in their future performances. Keep up the good work guys. Chameleon's a great song.

  • everybody who is dissing this vid just shut the f*** up! chameleon is one of the best songs we play in jazz band, and i play bass and i will never forget this riff i know it by heart and soul. Great stuff guys.

  • man this was solid. drums were groovin. dude trumpet sounded good but no second octave? that would have been tight to do the second octave. guitar solo was pretty sweet. did yall win?

  • why did u play a flugel on this song? what does it have to offer on an in your face funk song that a trumpet wouldn't have? im not trying to be antagonistic just wondering why you chose the flugel

  • for the 100th time, I got the flugel the day before and was excited to use it, so I did. It had nothing to do with what sounds better it was purely a selfish thing, I wanted to play my new horn, thats it nothing less mothing more.

  • no bad nice nice....:D

  • you shouldnt need music...

  • that comment has already been said, yout reiteration of it is so unnesseaary that I can't even spell properly anymore.

  • Very nice. i loved the fugle solo.

  • You guys need some serious work on your solo's they were terrible especially the sax fag

  • hi i like this song !!! have you got the partition of chameleon for saxophone ténor ??!!please answer me ! vivelaculture :)

  • p.s. playing the guitar with your teeth doesn't make you good, just a hendrix rip-off. there's nothing wrong with showmanship, but develop your own brand of it atleast.

  • not bad, but i've got to say to the guitarist, try to play something that isn't pentatonic-based. sure, the pentatonic isn't wrong to improvise over on this tune, but it would be a hell of alot more interesting if you got outside of that box.

learn the modes and try and be more melodic with your improvisations.you're on the right track though and you sound good, but this would be better if your solo wasn't so rock n' roll. melody, melody, melody.

  • nice guys. i play this with my band as well! change the bass tone though it sound shit. but still u guys are awsome players

  • why the bass guy didn´t do a solo??...

the guitar player!! nice mooove!!! nice solo!!!

  • pretty good stuff here... hope ya still jammin guys :D

  • Literally the grossest bass tone I've ever heard.

  • needs some work but i love herbie hancock keep it up

  • it's got a good funk feel, but the horns really don't use enough articulation, the trumpet in particular. Good tight rhythm section though.

  • tight groove

  • What's the song in the beginning?

  • Sandu by Clifford Brown

  • solos are straight high school garbage and the kid with the hat look stupid and the hat just says hey im 12 and suck! and for the guitar player congrats you just made a fool of yourself with that teeth crap. sorry to be so negitive but all solo are garbage you all need to wood shed for a long long time its all just sorry! i mean lord!!

  • Wow, I never knew what that hat represented. Now I think I'll be more careful in my selction of hats. Thanks for the tip.

  • your a fuck head. and an ass hole. fuck you. as if you can play you pice of shit. didnt your mommy teach you fuckin mannors

  • didn't your mummy teach you any spelling or grammar? 'you're' perhaps? Manners? or maybe you're one of those country hicks who are so inbred they can't walk straight lol

  • are you seriously replying a comment that someone posted 2 years ago. you are the epitome of the word loser.

  • ok chill, it's not as nearly as bad as you make it sounds.... they are doing a decent job, of course it could be better, but what the f*ck.

  • maybe it's just me but the audio doesn't seem to sync up with the video, not that it make much of a difference tho.

  • Gotta love the Floog

  • Jazz Performance @ Wimbledon College and Ursuline check out our version. Good job by the way, that snare is damn sexy

  • that guitarist is awesome, but he needs to chill out with the whole teeth thing

  • You guys are good... come and check out our version!

  • You guys need a new sax player!

  • huuuuuuu horrible horrible. I am better with m friends

  • These youngsters are actually very good. How come you don't see black kids doing this?? Too busy Rap'n, I guess. It's good to see young people try'n to bring some classics back to music.

    Good Video

  • that was an ignorant comment please keep that to yourself

  • It was only ignorant to you because you did'nt understand the "context" in which is was made. But that's o.k. too!!!!

  • please explain so i understand?

  • It has been my experience that, "generally" speaking, young black people don't get into Jazz very much. Winton Marsales has commented on this extensively. So, my reference to "Black" kids was in the context that they don't tend towards Jazz, classical or blues music, and it was nice to see "young" kids eventhough they are white playing that type of music.

  • Whats with the Fluegelhorn? Eh w/e works I guess. Props to the bad ass guitarist.

  • All soloing instruments, stop confining yourselves to blues scales. Thats only 6 notes you can work with on one scale. Stay cool on the solos, jazz and funk is cool. Use state-repeat-vary to improve the audience's interest. Develop structure.

  • Last note of bass chameleon note is flat. Drumming to harsh for funk. No ghost note on the bass. Add that and you'll sound phat.

  • that was a sick guitar solo, i liked the sax and trumpet(??) but it was hard to hear. and where was the bass solo? anyways good job.

  • props for keeping some good music alive

  • SAX PlAYER never turn your back on the audience unless your miles davis, i think you did pretty well, the guitar solo was rocking, but the drummer seems to think he is playing something from black sabbath

    peace

  • personally, when i do solos i try to avoid blues scales altogether to improve and increase use of other scales, since blues scales are a kind of "safe" route. however, this was around your sophomore years, so i applaud you for doing it as well as you did. seeing a group of such young musicians actually come together of their own free will to rehearse and perform by Herbie Hancock is impressive enough, and i think you did a really good job overall (especially for your age!). keep it up!

  • Oh my god... You DO NOT play guitar with your teeths in jazz fusion

  • Oh my god...you DO NOT put an 's' at the end of teeth in English!

  • YOU GUYS NEEDED MUSIC FOR CHAMELEON? and the trumpeter says he's goin to Berklee? i live in the uk and have just been granted a scholarship by my uni to study for my masters in jazz there. I dont think ill go now! have you guys ever heard of anything but a blues scale?

  • You pile of douche, first of all, this video was taken two years ago during my softmoore year, therefore, naturally my abilities have increased by now and my understanding of jazz has improved, second of all,I'm a classical trumpeter that is trying to learn how to improvise, its difficult for me but I keep trying and If your idea of a thrill is mocking teenagers that are at east 5 years younger than you, you should problably find aother hobbie.

  • Believe me, im not mocking. I just thought the standard to get into Berklee was far higher than that! As for being clasically trained - Im a classically trained clarinettist, and a jazz sax player. I dont play much clarinet anymore tho. But doesnt clasical training HELP you to remember stuff. At 15 you should NOT need the music for chameleon. Its TWO chords, both the same description!

  • The only thing that I'm going to say is that you will never succeed in the music business if your act in a pretentious way like your two preceeding comments. Music is about fun and exspression, not about being a sarcastic douche that gets a hard on by making fun of teenagers. Peace be with you.

  • so much for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism...

  • tru... rightboss is being a bit hard... but he's right in some respects... I truly appreciate these HS kids kickin' 70's fusion jazz... i'm sure they're going to be excellent musicians in their own rite... Chameleon is basically a jam session... no music needed... I personally play 5 different instruments pretty well (??) ... and don't read music. I was Taught to play sax as a child by Fred Lipsius a family friend.

  • Yo whats up guys. You guys sure know how to rock and funk up the Jazz. A few things though it might of been better with normal Trumpet great guitar solo its amazing. Also the main feature of the song is the Keyboard you guys might want to get better one try a Casio or a Electro 2 Organ. But dude keep up the trumpet I play that myself as well as Keyboard you guys have seriouse Funk, Jazz, and Hard bop Rock Potential Keep It Up. Sincerly Jazz 1 and 2 member at NHS MN

  • haha the guy wit the funny hat is playin a fuglohorn lmao

hhaa my band has one of those lmao :P

  • Great video, but I found the keyboard (which was prominent in the original song) was lacking, not turned up loud enough, the keyboardist didn't have enough 'jazz' in the music, and he didn't use technically difficult solos like in Hancock's music. I guess I seem to notice it more, since keyboard/piano are my main instruments. The video is good though, I really liked the guitar and drum solos.

  • Wow, you guys are amazing. I wish I could play with musicians up to your caliber at my high school. Only one other musician in my HS is up to this standard (I might be going to Ithaca College, as a sax player). I loved it. Nice solos all around. The sax player has a pretty decent jazz tone; I hope he continues to get better. I disagree with the extra instrumentation, I think you guys did a great job at arranging/performing this.

  • tnat makes sense. and i think the dude thinks its maynard ferguson because maynard played that a lot. even though he didnt write the orgininal

  • ya man, you oughta use a trumpet, a tenor sax, and maybe a few trombones in there...you know, put a little barbecue sauce on it! to the sax player: don't be shy man, just cause it's a trumpet lead don't mean you gotta play under him...that loses intensity. just gun up and wail man! nice rhythm section, keep it up guys...ps thanks for the tribute to my man Maynard Ferguson

  • How did we do a tribute to Maynard Ferguson?

  • Original tune was done by Herbie Hancock with sax and trumpet.... however, Maynard Ferguson also did a really kickass big band version about 10 years later.

  • There was no trumpet on the origanal, it was Keyboards, sax, bass, drums, and various percussive instruments on the album Head Hunters

  • You're absol. right, didn't remember. As a sophomore Saxist (1975) I had a band called Ecstasy. we were basically a funk band; EWF, Ohio Players, Average White Band, Kool & the Gang stuff... I understand that you're a classically trained musician trying to get w/the whole Jazz improv thing, I was opposie; never was 2 good at reading but could play ANYTHING and solo anytime, anywhere in any cord progression. I agree, Chameleon needs no sheet music.

  • Oh, my bad...I guess it's more of a Herbie deal huh? Sorry...I'm a big Maynard fan, and that's one of my favorite recordings of his...well good job on...well, whatever....lolz, deuces

  • Very true! The trumpet (Were you using a fugelhorn or a mellophone?) is considered in the soprano range! You're playing an alto saxophone - be louder to balance out the band. Perhaps even consider going to a tenor sax! But awesome job! I played this song for a jazz combo once & I used a tenor sax. It was so much fun!

  • why did you use a flugelhorn? hell it was a great song and you pulled it off but interesting choise of an intrument. i play on one of those for marching band and the parts are shared with the mellophones. so why didnt you use a trumpet?

  • Because I got it the day before and I wanted to use it, and I think its cool and its plays really smoothly. I also like its mellow sound.

  • not bad at all, but what happened to the breaks? only one person played it, not all like it had to be. the bassist kept on playing the same old melody. guitar solo was nice, bit superficial, kept hitting the high notes, the part were he played with his teeth was kinda gay, but it was not a bad solo

  • nice guitar solo....love this song

  • Ok, that was pretty cool I guess. But just after the guitar solo, it got really boring. You guys played the same thing over and over. The drummer and guitarist did a good work, but the other guys really need to clean up their shit. The keyboards sounded so incredibly lame...

Overall a good work, but the performance sucked. very boring to look at, you guys need to really play with eachother, it felt like everybody just wanted to show of with their solos.

  • SHUT UP! u bitch! jk

  • Your a bitch?

  • give props man, u gotta hand it to them for payin tribute and doin an alright job..itsjust some kids bro, as a musician i have to respect, post something better before dissin for no other reason besides the fact that you prob have nothin to show for it besides ridicule and worthless criticism. i agree with the drummer and bassist doin nothin, but its still a solid knack at the song

  • u probably cant play shit yourself

  • not really man im actually a berkleejazz performance major alumni..so you can take that comment and shove it up your pompus ass..sorry bro, im just not a dickhead and appreciate when young musicians actually recognize the founding fathers; so seriously dude you just sound like a complete idiot

  • btw the way the one video you have posted sucks more than anything ive ever seen, in my entire life

  • Did u guys win? this totally kicked ass.

  • what kind of pedal is the guitarist using...the green one.

  • probably an ibanez tubescreamer

  • i wonder why you used a flugel, i personally would use just a trumpet, get that nice blaring tone up in the higher registers

  • It was a new horn, got it the day before, I just wanted to play it.

  • haha yeah i know the feeling, cant be helped

  • Damn. Good job guys.

  • the guitar solo was seriously rockin...i could tell right away that he's the best player in the band. Your two horn players need to work on building up the solo, you use the same ideas over the same range over and over. trying wailing something in your higher range. your rhythm section is pretty solid as well

  • dude the guitar solo is fine...it is rocking! like an old chuck berryish kind of way.

  • Is it necessary that you read music to this?!? Make eye contact with the crowd!

  • dude they did fine it doens't mattter

  • personally i'm more concerned at how the song sounds than its presentation. playing it right's more important than looking "cool"

  • Lol i love the lame disclaimer 'all solos are improvised', maybe you could add something like 'all instruments were played by human fingers.

  • not every person that comes across this video will realize they were improvised

  • wicked song the whole thing is so good

  • Drummer sped it up.

  • you sped up

  • Wow, your funny.

  • I'm just kidding dude, I'm like that, I'm a trumpet player

  • Oh your a trumpet, makes sence now. Its all good.

  • Of course. It's typical and expected. Have you heard the original? They speed up a whole lot!

  • As a trumpet player, I'm not to sure flugel was a good choice. you need to explore some range, do ome half valves. overall lift a hubbard solo. he's wicked. you got a nice sound and some good idea, just don't be afraid to explore differnt ideas and tricks. best of luck guys it's sounding great.

    Elliot

  • i like it, my funk band does the same intro like this, and u guys did it well, there's always room for work, so dont be phased by these hardasses!

  • Hi, im impressed, but it would've sounded great with a nice Moog or ARP synth bass alongside the regular bass. Great work though guys!

  • i love the drums solo!!!

but the rest is also very cool!

  • Great job guys. Don't listen to the douchebags on this site trying to bring you down. It was far from perfect, but I should think you would readily recognize that yourself. Welcome to music and audiences. Some will like it, most will think it sucks--even Beethoven went through that. So just keep going, and ignore any success--that's the worst curse of all.

  • Why do people still play this tune? It's like Cissy Strut for Christ's sake. Everybody and their freakin' brother has played this tune to death. Don't you get sick of it? How about trying "Sophistifunk" or "Actual Proof" instead? That drummer IS a douche. I wanna close those hi-hats on his head!

I will give praise to the guitarist, though!

  • Your a huge bag of douche covered in rosie o'donnell's cooch
