I cant decide between Leonardo Dicaprio and Ralph Fiennes, but Tommy Lee Johns didnt deserve it Malkovich and Postlethwaite were better than him but if i had to choose probably go with Leo
that's probably the biggest joke und injustice in all Oscar's history, especially if you consider the fact that DiCaprio, Fiennes, Malkovich and Postlethwaite are/were all tremendous actors, all have never won an Oscar until today and all are couple of levels above Tommy Lee Jones
I honestly think it should've gone to either Ralph Fienesse, John Malkovich, or Leonardo DiCaprio. Just like Ralph Fienesse in Schindler's List John Malkovich's evilness as Booth made your skin crawl. And Leonardo DiCaprio really made you think he was mentally disabled in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. It's a shame Johnny Depp was snubbed for that movie.
I am shocked. Anybody but Tommy Lee Jones should've one the Oscar that year. And don't tell me that's the scene that sealed the deal for him. "I don't care!" GIVE THE MAN A FUCKIN' STATUE!
So, did the voters not see 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' or 'Schindler's List'? Or did they just figure "oh, well, Jones was nominated before, so let's just give it to him"? What a crappy choice
I haven't seen the Fugitive, but seeing from the outstanding work done by Ralph Fiennes and Leonardo DiCaprio makes me mad that Jones got the Oscar. I would have chosen Fiennes however. Maybe I'm just too biased in favor of Schindler's List, but since Leo was the only nomination for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, he also deserved the Oscar. So Fiennes > DiCaprio > Jones.
Nothing. Not one fucking scene with him was Oscar worthy. He is so fucking bland and irritating in that movie that i wanted Kimble to blow his brains out. The Fugitive is an awesome movie, but I think Tommy Gay Jones was the weak link.
Fiennes, Postlethwaite and DiCaprio were so much better than Tommy Lee Jones. Anyone with sense and acting knowledge will know that Lee Jones wasn't the best. He won because of the typical politics/overdue factors.
Leonardo DiCaprio deserved it more than anyone else, he nailed his role in "What's eating Gilbert Grape", and it was a difficult role... Oh ! And he was just 19, and that was his first big movie !
I'm sorry but are we the only people who notice how fucking bad this presenter is, I MEAN WATCH HER APPROACH THE PODIUM AND THEN SWING HER HIPS FROM SIDE TO SIDE - it's like a freaking 1980's k-mart cat walk or something?
Don't even get me started on her fantastic sense of humor.
I don't get why people say TLJ "Stole" the Oscar, I think it's such a misleading word. Fiennes was more deserving sure, but its not like Jones reached up and tore the Oscar from his hand onstage or anything. People are talking like TLJ bought the Oscar or actually made the decision to give himself the award, which isn't true.
Because Tom Hanks played a mna suffering with AIDS to perfection. Did you see that scene where he just stands on the sidewalk crying? That immeditaley had "Oscar" on it.
I think Jones did well, but his role was a lot easier than Ralps because the Fugitive is filled with action and doesn't have that much emotion. So although they both did great imo, I think Ralph should've won.
@shaq4everdominant dude it is impossible that they make a decision without making people disappointed. They were all amazing performances and just be happy they were nominated in the first place.
don't misunderstand - Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor ...but FOR THE FUGITIVE? what the heck was going wrong that year within the academy? Ralph Fiennes gave one of the most intense and deepest performances I ever saw...
This is the textbook definition of highway robbery. Fiennes, Leo or Malkovich deserved it waaaaaaaaay more than that old dork. Once again, the Oscars fuck up. First it was this, than Nic cage winning it, then Denzel Washingt5on winning for Training Day. This is unbelievable.
Tommy was great in the movie. He got it due to its popularity. Malkovich could have got it too, he was great. But yes, Fiennes should have got the oscar. I bet they felt Schindlers List already won too many.
Sorry, I like Mr. Jones but I really think Fiennes got robbed. He surely portrayed the one of the worst villains in any film history. The most vicious character. #this for me is one of the biggest upsets in oscar history, if not the biggest! i know alot of people would say that dicaprio should of won but i would of had to give it to fiennes. such an terrifying and outstanding performance in schindlers list, a close second would have had to gone to the great Pete for in the name of the father. As i said, some of you may disagree but the main argument is not between the other nominees and who should of won, its the disgrace that it was given to Jones!!!!!!
nice speech by jones but come on he didn't deserve it dicaprio should have won it! he was beyond brilliant in that film and the other nominees were good too- i didn't mind jones in the fugitive but i was NOT Oscar worthy
What a amazing group! Five astonishing actors ! Certainly one the best supporting actors' group in the all academy awards' history ! In my opinion though, Leo deserved it ! What he did, around his 18's, in his third movie is miraculous ! One of the best performances of ever ! Thinking that just one of these four men got an oscar makes me pewke !
@Weeds1239 Considering TLJ won pretty much every award going into this, how exactly was this the "biggest upset ever"? Is it just because you disagree?
Stronger year for best supporting nominations in decades!!! Funny that the weakest of the four won the Oscar, but i can't even choose beetween DiCaprio,Postlethwaite and Fiennes 'cos these three were amazing beyond words.
Malkovich's Oscar should've been here. Although Tommy deserves it as well, so I guess I nullified my own comment.
Tommy is more like the co-lead in that movie, he really supplies a lot of the passion. Harrison is just in such a frenzy that he has no time for passion, haha. Btw, I love In The Name of the Father...just love that film.
The Oscar should have gone to Ralph Fiennes with DiCaprio a close second. All of them were great that year, but Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goth is arguably the greatest supporting role performance ever.
More then a decade later, this still baffles me. Pete Postlethwaite gave a breathtaking performance in a brilliant film, Ralph Fiennes chilled the audience in an incredible movie. Tommy Lee Jones stars in a typical action movie, and wins.
I think this review says it best: "Speaking of Goeth, Ralph Fiennes stuns with his intricate, savage portrayal of the Nazi commander, a man fascinated by power and murder. Fiennes' Goeth has the rare ability to both mesmerize and repulse, and this is a performance that will long be remembered". Enough said.
Woah, strong actors in this one! But seriously, Ralph Fiennes deserved it. And I have a big question, what makes the Oscars so big anyway? I mean were they always this big of an award show? I mean anyone can be a member of the academy. It's mainly about personal opinion.
Of all the clips they could have shown to capture Tommy Lee's performance in that film, they probably picked the worst one. That was the only scene in which the character was stifled and on the backfoot. He absolutely owned the rest of the film.
Why couldn't they have shown the "Our Fugitive's name is Dr Richard Kimble" Speech?
Anyway, he deserved to win, even against such great competition.
I tell yeah, it would've been tough being on the selection committee to choose that year. I forgot the competition. Glad Tommy Lee got it though. Great movie and actor. But yip, Ralph Fiennes was mezmerizing in his performance. And Leonardo, some day, kiddo, some day....
the Academy made a great decision and a shitty decision in the same night. Great decision: Awarding Best Picture/Best Director to Schindler's List. Shitty decision: Awarding Best Supporting Actor to Tommy Lee Jones for the Fugitive instead of Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List.
Fiennes was amazing in Schindler's List, but did his performance really stand out in that film as much as Lee's character did in the Fugitive? It's interesting that the Academy made this choice, but it was bold and well-deserving.
@zachedwards92 The Fugitive was the best picture of all the other nominees and Tommy Lee Jones was by FAR the best supporting actor, hell he could have won the lead actor too. Watch U.S. Marshals the sequel to the Fugitive, not quite as good as the fugitive, but I really like it, Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr. Are in that one too.
@hypercriticalone i didnt HATE the movie, it's just DiCaprio was the front runner, Malcovich was #2, and Fiennes was #3 in my opinion. Strong, powerful performances which make their work in the movie crucial in making the films what they were. Jone's role has been played many other times in trying to find a criminal in other movies, and i didnt understand the big deal with this movie. good nonetheless, just not 'powerful'.
Respond to this video... as for winning best picture? no way. Schindler's List is a masterpiece. if it didnt win their wouldve been chaos. a much deserved win
@LeoFan2012 NO... The best man won, What's eating gilbert grape is one of the 100 worst movies of all time, right up there was titanic... DiCaprio's best film to this day is still The Departed, at least he didn't suck in that movie
why people always think Oscar should get someone who changes his accent, body... why shouldn't Oscar be awarded for roles like Tommy Lee Jones had? he was tottaly in this character, every word and move he did was just great...
You can totally see Leo being scared out of his mind! He was cringing the whole time they showed his part. In an interview he was actually relieved that he didn't win because he had stage fright.
Ralph Fiennes scared the crap out of me in Schindler's List! He was so robbed. This was probably and 'I'm sorry Oscar" for Tommy Lee Jones because he didn't win for "J.F.K.". Ralph Fiennes should win for his outstanding portrayal as Lord Voldemort in the "Harry Potter" movies.
I'll be honest with you, I've watching the academy awards for years now, and this is the only year in my memory where I just couldn't select a winner. All the five nominees are so good it's, well, impossible to choose. Tomy Lee Jones's oscar isn't undeserving. The other four people not winning one is.
The academics judges are blind or what, they do not recognize true talent. Another example is Sandra Bullock's oscar, for Blind side.Oscar Awards level goes down.
Sir Ralph Fiennes the best ACTOR in the fucking world.
Easily one of the most undeserving wins, not that he did a bad job but to me all the other nominees were miles ahead of him. Mainly Fiennes and Postlewhite but Malkovich and DiCaprio were more deserving. Bummer cause Jones is a good actor and does good work but not for this movie and role.
Leo or Ralph should have won. And according to some of the comments, playing mentally retarded is "easy." O-kay. Thanks YouTube, I know I can always count on you.

I think Tommy's embarassed of the clip they've shown.

@prkprkprk2 all of the movies were made in 1993, but the oscars would have been early 1994.

In my opinion there is a tie between Tommy Lee Jones, Ralph Fiennes, Leo DiCaprio, John Malkovich and P. Postlethwaite

Tommy Lee Jones was great in The Fugitive, but should have won ex-aequo with the amazing Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.
ALE280290 1 year ago 3
IN MY OPINION tommy really deserved
chicoamf 1 year ago
OUTRAGEOUS! shoulda been Ralph!! I mean, I liked tommy lee jones in the fugitive...but just doesn't compare to Fiennes in Schindler's List!!

Tommy Lee Jones gave a great performance as a Federal Marshall, but Ralph Fiennes gave a better performance
LizardDude42 1 year ago 3
Definitely should have been either Ralph Fiennes or Leonardo Dicaprio. Sometimes, I really wonder what/how Academy comes up with their wins.
vegasbaby92 1 year ago 3
@vegasbaby92 I wouldn't really have mined if either Leo or Ralph won...Tommy was ace, don't get me wrong, but not in the league of those two boys
romanblood 1 year ago
dicaprio was deserving.
fiennes was too.
malckovich 3rd.
tommy lee jones- no way.
4th - no.
it was a 3 way tie imo. i think they just idk. the fugitive isnt really that good of a movie.
zachedwards92 1 year ago
@zachedwards92 The Fugitive was the best picture of all the other nominees and Tommy Lee Jones was by FAR the best supporting actor, hell he could have won the lead actor too. Watch U.S. Marshals the sequel to the Fugitive, not quite as good as the fugitive, but I really like it, Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr. Are in that one too.
hypercriticalone 1 year ago
@hypercriticalone i didnt HATE the movie, it's just DiCaprio was the front runner, Malcovich was #2, and Fiennes was #3 in my opinion. Strong, powerful performances which make their work in the movie crucial in making the films what they were. Jone's role has been played many other times in trying to find a criminal in other movies, and i didnt understand the big deal with this movie. good nonetheless, just not 'powerful'.
zachedwards92 1 year ago
Respond to this video... as for winning best picture? no way. Schindler's List is a masterpiece. if it didnt win their wouldve been chaos. a much deserved win
zachedwards92 1 year ago
Leonardo DiCaprio was robbed.
He deserved to win
LeoFan2012 1 year ago
@LeoFan2012 NO... The best man won, What's eating gilbert grape is one of the 100 worst movies of all time, right up there was titanic... DiCaprio's best film to this day is still The Departed, at least he didn't suck in that movie
hypercriticalone 1 year ago
@hypercriticalone You have very poor taste. Your parents should be ashamed of you.. Or are they dumb as shit as well?

why people always think Oscar should get someone who changes his accent, body... why shouldn't Oscar be awarded for roles like Tommy Lee Jones had? he was tottaly in this character, every word and move he did was just great...

You can totally see Leo being scared out of his mind! He was cringing the whole time they showed his part. In an interview he was actually relieved that he didn't win because he had stage fright.
Aprillis29 1 year ago
Ralph Fiennes scared the crap out of me in Schindler's List! He was so robbed. This was probably and 'I'm sorry Oscar" for Tommy Lee Jones because he didn't win for "J.F.K.". Ralph Fiennes should win for his outstanding portrayal as Lord Voldemort in the "Harry Potter" movies.
bandgeeksrul 1 year ago
I'll be honest with you, I've watching the academy awards for years now, and this is the only year in my memory where I just couldn't select a winner. All the five nominees are so good it's, well, impossible to choose. Tomy Lee Jones's oscar isn't undeserving. The other four people not winning one is.
todegriks 1 year ago
what the f*#k?. Tommy Lee Jones?.- jajajajjajajaj
The academics judges are blind or what, they do not recognize true talent. Another example is Sandra Bullock's oscar, for Blind side.Oscar Awards level goes down.
Sir Ralph Fiennes the best ACTOR in the fucking world.

Leo....maybe one day.

JamesE1974 1 year ago
NO! RALPH FIENNES! HIS ROLE IN SCHINDLERS LIST WAS EPIC!
XxXMyTeenageLifeXxX 1 year ago 4
No other actor deserved the Oscar for that year than Ralph Fiennes. Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive? For what? For playing himself?
jamietotz 1 year ago 4
Ralph Fiennes should have won by far

Leo or Ralph should have won. And according to some of the comments, playing mentally retarded is "easy." O-kay. Thanks YouTube, I know I can always count on you.
