I can't say this is bad, but the sound is not great, and think thats due to 2 things, the camera has not got a great mic, also the drums themselves are not tuned up so great (in my opinion) but he can play...
What is the purpose of this demonstration? A display of independence? Perhaps I don't understand what he's doing, so I hope nobody takes offense, but it kind of sounds like garbage cans tumbling down a very long stairway. I really can't hear any musicality here...sorry :(

The first time i saw this I didnt get it, but the time is completely solid throughout. Its just modulating and really busy so it sounds all over the place.
@drumbum1010 Hmm.. Ask steve jordan what he thinks about justin. Justin taught steve, charley drayton and many many others and nit just drummers. he is one of the finest out there.
Hey, you just moved in next to my best friend's folks, the Kaisers! I'm a jazz drummer, too, studied with Dawson and Erskine. The name's Brykman. See you soon!
OK this guy is one of the best living jazzers I've ever seen (if you dont include really famous people like Roy, Peter, Bill Stewart, Jeff Hamilton, and so on). But I have to join in with others in saying I'm somewhat saddened that there's no lesson (such as the title implies).
when every in here gets there doctorate in music then you can say that its bad (which it's not). this guy works at the manhattan school of music you have to be top notch to go/teach there. he knows what he is doing.
Haha, and your sense of time must be even more awful since you cant hear that he is holding the pulse through the whole video while playing odd groups, polyrhytmic patterns, and hemiols all over the place. Man, may haters be banned to another planet or something...
He's playing a pattern that you'd normally find in 4/4 pushed as triplets, I think it's called polymetrics or some shit (or maybe it's a polyrhythm but I think there's a distinction...)
Beautiful textures! I love the way the whole drumset spoke, not just licks, but in one voice...and hip way to put it back in a frame of reference at the end!
stop calling these kinds of videos "lessons"

Generally though, I'm kind of wishing I hadn't been there at all... (I got a lot more out of hanging out at gigs...)

Yes--I am VERY glad I studied w/ Riley instead of this guy. He was like a cult leader at MSM. We called him "L. Ron DiCioccio"

...taking acid before going to your drum lesson is bad mmmkay?
the camera moving around like that is actually kind of appropriate for the way the time is shifting around like that in the solo...
very cool playing

if i had decided to go to manhattan school, i would have been pissed if i was stuck with him and not riley.
