  • Great scene one of the best.

  • Which episode was this from? Trying to track it down via netflix and the ST wiki, with no luck.

  • @RevolutionUtena This is DS9 season 4, Episode 01 & 2: "The way of the warrior". The version I have is 1,5 hours long, and this clip starts at roughly 1:09:50 in that episode. (At almost three quarters of the episode) Took me a while to find this, but happy to be of service. =)

  • The Federation is space America.

  • classic

  • why is that k'narr peachy coloured ??? i always thought it was black

  • @charmlighter It changed a lot. Maybe "kanar" just means "liquor." That comes in all colors and sizes. :)

  • i agree with garak's reaction to root beer it is vile lol

  • i love star trek, and enjoy all the different series (even enterprise, but archer is dead to me!!) but only ds9 was able to make it believable. it is the only series that to me actually came off as something real. and don't get me wrong, i love them all, but i also love ed edd and eddy from cartoon network...

  • Root isn't vile. It's delicious; just like the Federation. xD

  • The Federation save the Cardassians? Ha!!! Too bad the Cardassians betrayed the whole alpha quadrant to the Dominion and in the end they ended up getting destroyed in the worst way. Serves them right for what they did to the Bajorans.

  • DS9 <3

  • i always thought these were the two best characters of DS9 though weyoun is pretty awesome too

  • Fascinating scene with Armin Shimerman and Andrew Robinson! Weren't they absolutely *great* as Quark and Garak!? There weren't too many scenes with both of them sharing screentime but this is one of the best! Thanks for posting this! :-)

  • DS9 the bets star trek and tv series

  • huh... I don't like root beer..

  • @xandrew3 wonder how he would have liked that other who-man drink Prune Juice

  • Is Garak played by the same guy throughout the series? He looks so different from early on to later

  • @Blasted2Oblivion The entire time he's played by Andrew Robinson. Over the years they redid the mask and coloring for Cardasians.

  • @stareyedwitch I didnt know that. I guess it wouldnt take much to drastically change someones look in the makeup department.

  • @Blasted2Oblivion Yeah, ah well. I found who played him on Memory-alpha a site dedicated to nothing but Star Trek.

  • While watching a speaking event with the actor who plays Garak, he said that this scene was written as they were shooting - it was done on the fly, an after thought. Very lucky.

  • Garak and Quark, two of the best characters brought to screen not just in all of Star Trek world, but in all Sci Fi. Each with his own and different personal traits, but both really well drawn.

Sarcastic, funny, secretive, sharp, greedy, selfish, and yet both with just enough humanity and vulnerability to make their complex (i.e. not black and white) natures really interesting. And of course they are superbly acted by Tony Robinson and Armin Shimmerman.

    Great scene.

  • This is the type if scene that i love. Small, short and goes kind of a round about way of letting you look into the mind and heart of two characters without all the drama or taking-up a full ep inorder to do. DS9 and B5 had so many things like this and are why they where some of the best of they kind out there at the time.

  • This is why DS9 was such a good show. It wasn't just a Sci-fi show, It was a show about people.

  • Never thought to compare the Federation to root beer...

  • One of my favorite scenes, thanks for uploading.

  • Garak, with Quark are by far my two favourite characters in Star Trek Deep Space NIne. He's the kind of guy you'd like having on your side when things go bad.

  • garak is the best char in star trek and i thought of this clip the first time i tried root beer. it's vile!!

  • I always thought of it spelled with a K, Kanar or maybe even Kanarr

  • how do you spell canar? i thin it shoudl eb a real drink

  • @hitman12 yeha ti shuuld. itd b kewl

  • The first and only star trek series where you were allowed to think the Federation wasn't the greatest thing in the world.

  • @Soullinkia One of the main reasons DS9 is and always will be the best!!

  • @Soullinkia u mean in the universe?>

  • @Soullinkia Not really. Voyager integrated several Maquis members. (Chakotay, B'elanna) and on several occasions explain why they don't agree with the Federation.

  • Classic!

  • Garak's expressions are superb ^^

  • one of the best jokes in the Star Trek universe :)

  • This is one of the best exchanges in all of Star Trek methinks. : D

Great conversation, great characters, and some wonderful sentiments.

  • As I am drinking a root beer...

  • Great conversation AND great acting.

Shimerman and Robinson really made a damned good job.

  • 2 of my favourite ST DS9 characters.

    + Odo + Sisko.

And my Fav. ST TNG are Worf, Riker, Picard, Data.

and from ST TOS - the Triumvirate (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) :D

from female's all are ok, and just there, but Kira and Ro Laren are difficult characters what I liked the most.

PS. im new to Star Trek ^_^ so its whole new universe for me. just watching DS9 right now

  • @Chaostos New to Star Trek? How old are you now? How are you enjoying it? Which series have you enjoyed the most?

  • @rjd071983

    23 =)

Original ST looked to old for me when I was like 12-15 cant remember. But I gave it a chance now, after the new movie what got me hooked, then I watched TNG and so on =) Enterprise is only ST i havent watched for now.

its hard to pick a favourite, story & character for me are more emotional & interesting to follow in DS9 + how the story of wartime evolves.

for crazy adventures OS and TNG feels strong =) and Picard is whole reason to watch TNG, for me

    my favourite series

  • @rjd071983

my favourite series are probably DS9 & Voyager, coming second are TNG & OS. Each ofcourse for theyr own reasons.

What I liked in Voyager is the idea of SF team in deep space where they are alien to almost everyone, where they struggle with obeying StarFleet codex, surviving and helping whoever they can. It brings the feel of OriginalSeries exploration and adds deep characters & emotions of DS9.

my fav. Voyager characters are Janewey, Neelix, Doctor and...well and the rest :D

  • @rjd071983

Its hard to pick my only FAv. character from ST, I want to be as badass, smart, strong & cool as Picard is =) he is my favourite captain from a movie ever and I agree with most of his decisions and ideals. Janeway takes 2nd place.

I can relate more to Neelix & Quark probably, funny, sacrcastic & wise in theyr own ways, and Pro at what they do, even if that seems not so important to some vulcans :) But usualy it is, they save the day many times (sometimes without anyone knowing it).

  • @rjd071983

and I watched ST series in theyr chronological order, as they were released.

OS then TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

I gave a shot of first 2 ST movies, didnt enjoy them much. the last ST 2009 is my fav ST movie, and I love it as an action & eye candy + characters and actors are awesome. Plot..., for Plot I choose ANY OS,TNG,DS9,V-r series episode over ST 2009 :)

Sorry for a wall of text everyone, I hope im not alone enjoying this so much :D

    peace !

  • This is my favorite scene in all of DS9

  • They blaspheme. Root beer is the nectar of the gods!

  • @fkreller1 No wonder the Klingons killed theirs, then... ;~)

  • root beer is freaking awesome.... no joke

  • they're both cynical and they're professional liars which makes them a good "team" in conversation! it's unfortunate they didn't talk like this a little more often!

  • @Maulwurf7585 Absolutely! I had the exact same thought when I saw this. I wish those characters had interacted more often. Well expressed.

  • This may be one of the best scenes from all of Star Trek.

  • The highest on acting, ever. Golden Globe worthy.

That's when I say: What's good special effects, CGI or 3D if you don't get real dialogue and story in the first place?

  • quark is a people person! totally awesome.

  • In the future rootbeer is stored in coffee pots lol

  • I think this is a far better description of the enlightened future of humanity than even gene roddenberry could come up with

  • The very very very very best thing about this scene is that it really gives you an insight into how outsiders of the Federation would see our annoying human optimism and Star Trek utopianism. Well, that and the fact that this is really funny.

  • 'I am here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

'No,' says the man in Washington, 'it belongs to the poor.'

'No,' says the man in the Vatican, 'it belongs to God.'

'No,' says the man in Moscow, 'it belongs to everyone.'

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...

  • LOL at Garaks expressions, first the indescisiveness about tasting the beer and then the taste test...."IT'S VILE!"

  • When I lived in the US I tasted rootbeer once, and I have to agree with Garak, It's vile;-P

  • @ladythalia But if you drink enough of it... :D

(Srsly, root beer is great. :) As long as you get the right brand of it, anyway.)

  • One of the best conversations in Trek. Thanks for posting!

  • Is this the episode where Garak has the addiction?

  • @kitzlaihel Nope, this is the episode where the Klingons attack the station. Early season 4. The episode you refer to is very good by the way.

  • It is, I haven't seen it in ages though.

  • @kitzlaihel The addiction you are talking about sounds like an episode called "The Wire", where he became addicted to a higher endorphin level in his body. But the device that was creating them broke down, and he got kind of moody. ;)

  • @kitzlaihel This is "Way of the Warrior" S4E01-2

  • I can't get enough of this particular video.

  • Root beer isn't vile, regular beer is.

  • The expression on Garaks face when he sees the root beer is just priceless. "He can't be serious. I don't think this is meant for cardassian consumption. Really, I don't want people to see me puke all over the counter in case this is as indigestable as I think it is. ... Oh hell, whatever."

  • I can see the attraction...for you. ROFL. Gotta love Garak.

  • This sums up why DS9 was so great. You couldn't have this conversation on any other Trek series, especially with such interesting outsider characters.

  • @MerelyAFan An interesting detail: this was supposed to be a "filler" scene (AJ Robinson said that, at a convention held in Germany, if I'm not mistaken). Both Robinson and Shimerman didn't understand the purpose of the scene, what they were supposed to do, so it was rewritten on the go. It's amazing how they turned it into one of many people's fav (myself included) just by sheer chemistry and great acting :) Then again, any scene w/ Garak in it is ah-mazing :D

  • @AindaMais Shimmerman and Robinson's understanding of the characters definitely worked well here. Also notable in that its not Garak subtly manipulating to get information or Quark trying to sell/pitch something to get profit. Its a fun scene if just to see two cunning and often facetious players on DS9 drop all facades and just discuss the nature of the beast that is the Federation.

  • @MerelyAFan Sure there was.... like how Guinan stabbed Q in the hand with a fork.

  • This scene in magic. Pure quality. Fantastic speech by Quark and Garak is as always fantastic. This scene stands next to the scene where Quark is telling Jake in the cargo bay how much he's helped Odo with his relationship with Kira. and when Quark is in Odo's office telling him that "now is not the time for a Changling pride parade on the Promenade."

  • Hmmm...

I wonder if they were getting paid by Root Beer companies.

    "It's so... happy."

  • It's kind of interesting to see how the Federation is viewed by other species, or at least two members of those species.

  • The dialogue of Star Trek. Only a parallel universe now... =(

  • Most of the alien races are exgharatted human traits.

    1) Ferengi -> Greed

    2) Cardassian -> Facism

    3) Klingons -> Obsessed with honor, Vikings or Japanese.

  • 4) Humanity -> Communism

  • *Successful communism

  • i thought Romulams were Communism

  • Based on what do you think that?

  • Well why do you think Humanity is Communis

  • Lol, I asked you a question. :-p

Humanity is communism because key elements of Marx' vision of the future have been realised. It's strictly egalitarian, money has been abolished, developments in industrial production have made it possible just like Marx suggested. Nevertheless everyone works together, motived by the 'betterment of humanity'. Also humanity's universalism, their 'world government exported to space' is part of Marx' ideas. And more ideas I haven't thought of.

  • @HMDerek4 true but that really flawed part of Marx's ideals that the federation does not share is that Marx believed the unproductive should be eliminated, and religion or beliefs that divide people should be abolished, while the federation has openness to beliefs and cares for weak and elderly. The federation is more like the Social Democratic dream the then communist one.

  • @HMDerek4

So the only way Marx's ideas and "communism" can work is if we invent a machine that can magically "replicate" anything and everything instanstaneusly...... XD

  • @Wraith23 After all, with a replicator, everything except life and energy is post-scarcity, so the only economy left is energy.

  • @inamerica55585 AND LATINUM!

  • @BlueCrystalGem Why can't you replicate Latinum?

  • @inamerica55585 I think it was mentioned in one of the episode due to Latinum's molecular instabilities, it can not be replicated. Not everything can be replicated in Star Trek, certain military technologies are designed to be unreplicable.

  • @HMDerek4

The Romulams have a centrally planned economy and share a lot or other 'Communist' countries such as North Korea and China during the 1960s.

For example, their isolationism from the outside world and how most of their industrial production goes towards the military.

But of course, Romulams are not in any way real Communist. They are more like the ones in our real world that claims to be so.

  • @chankljp

Wel I agree that the Romulan world is totalitarian, like communism. But that's not a trait specific to communism. A planned economy is though, the Romulans have that?

  • @HMDerek4

That was what I read on a few Star Trek fan sites and if I remember correctly, the Star Trek wiki.

  • @HMDerek4 Romulan economy, and government type is like that of ancient Imperial Rome....it is quite a corrupt society but not communist in nature.

  • @chankljp I always saw the Romulan Empire as a fascist state with roman republic undertones. The wealthy run the Senate. The police (Tal'Shiar) makes sure everyone "agrees" with the State. Besides, it is not only Communism that got a planned economy. Fascism also, with State corporatism.

  • @chankljp a planed economy might not be a bad thing considering the computing power they have.

  • @HMDerek4 My opinion is that humanity in Star Trek is now beyond communism. For communism, economy is everything as it is in capitalism. The difference is that for communism the workers should be in power and own the means of production. In Star Trek, economy has ceased to be the main moving force of society. Private propriety still exists, but it is no longer relevent. Why should it be with replicators? Maybe humanity is a true democracy, not the plutocracy we're living in.

  • @Xerxes2005 I have dubbed what you are talking about: Star Trek Communism - When the means of production vastly exceeds it's populations need. What is required is a significantly lowered world population and/or technological breakthroughs for production (replicators is probably what caused this in Star Trek, but nothing as groundbreaking is required imo.)

  • What's interesting are the two stages of the Federation's history we get to see. The first is in ENT and TOS, where they didn't have replicators, and the second is in TNG and beyond, where they've completely transcended material scarcity. In the former, they talk more often about famines and getting paid, which implies that there's still some kind of productive economy. So we've achieved global cooperation even with conditions of economic scarcity. That always seemed more interesting to me.

  • @jimbopumbapigsticks In TOS, they had food synthesizers though. In ST IV: Voyage Home, Kirk says that they don't have money in the 23rd century. Also, we must make a difference between Earth and its colonies. Earth is a paradise. Some colonies are not and are still in need. Tasha Yar's home was a violent hell. There's also a difference between interior economy and exterior economy. The UFP and Terrans must hoard some currency to deal with alien civilisations, but it is not needed inside the UFP.

  • rather say klingons represent pride.

  • I'd say it would be rather impossible for a human to come up with something truly alien....

  • @rkmugen Well the Insect like races, such as Tyranids from Warhammer 40k are truely alien, or animalistic. They just consume everything in their path.

  • This is what makes DS9 worth watching. It is one of the few iterations of Star Trek that doesn't sound like a hyped up cheerleader for the Federation (i.e. the humans). Flawed protagonists are more interesting than Superman types.

  • You're right. TNG was about how far we could come as a civilization, while DS9 was about how no matter how much we progress as a civilization, we're still human with the same flaws we've always had.

  • @Uejji just like the federation.........

  • what episode is this from??

  • "The Way of the Warrior," I believe.

  • This definetly was one of the best scenes in DS9. Very memorable.

  • Great clip.

Quark and Garak are two of my favorite characters in the entire Star Trek series, along with the Doctor from Voyager, of course.

I used to hate root beer, but I've grown to love it over the years.

I started with Parker's, but I've long moved on to IBC. Those are VERY good.

  • @Jings0b Completely agree.

  • Just like the Federation.

  • It's awesome because it is two aliens talking about the Federation. Not as it's biggest fans but as beings that have seen it and for all their worries about it are getting to like and depend on it, and talking about how they feel about that.

  • Yeah, this is in my top 3 best Star Trek scenes of all time!

  • Garak was such an infectious character. I cant help but like him.

  • @NewsMan580 ...just like root beer.

  • "It's vile!" - WTFBOOM!

  • "Its..... INSIDIOUS!"  >=')

  • I think this is the first time the station is attacked by the dominion. Or, maybe the klingons.

  • What episode is this scene from again?

  • This is from the 4th season opener "The Way Of The Warrior" which brings Worf into the DS9 series.

The scene was improvised by Armin Shimerman (Quark) and Andrew Robinson (Garek) since the script ran short.

  • really, it was improvised? how'd you find that out? was it in one of the dvd extras, or the ds9 companion? i'm curious...

  • DS9 companion. I believe the scene was short, Armin and Andrew were supposed to do the short scene as a comedy piece of sorts, and started adding some more lines, how the Federation is like Rootbeer, warm and bubbly even though both Quark and Garek don't care for them or the drink but have become used to them.

  • You know, Garak would make a pretty damn good councilor himself.

  • One of the best scenes in trek history.

  • I love this scene! Definitely my top favourites! :D

  • I have to say, this scene is my single favorite scene in all of Star Trek, including the movies and the animated series. JUST LIKE THE FEDERATION!

  • I agree! Well... maybe Picards 'THIS FAR AND NO FARTHER!!' is better. ;-)

  • Naaaah. Picard's line of

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" *smashes his little ships* is much better.

  • Agreed, that IS the best scene in all of Star Trek, as far as acting is concerned.

  • Give ME a raktajino. The name alone sounds like there's a Starbucks on every street corner in Qo'Nos.

  • i drink prune jiust...A WARIORS DRINK!

  • root beer sucks a lot

  • Not all hu-mans like root beer.

  • Rootbeer Rocks! XD I love this part so much, Garak and Quark are so hilarious. lol!

  • I hate root beer.

  • Yeah, it's pretty terrible.

  • Ahhh! My 2 favorite characters together <33333

How can you not love Quark and Garak~

    Favorited! XD
