best game.... I must be one of the few that have it in sweden... took about 2 month before they had shipt it over to me from the states.. the converter came first ... :(
The thing that made this game screwed up is that infantry were basically cannon fodder, while tanks were all-powerful. The reality is tanks should have been massacred in city or woods terrain. I still loved playing it though.
@RWT683 Infantry had their uses though. Large numbers of infantry could destroy mechanized units. They could knock out artillery. They could also cross rivers when no bridge is available. They could easily go behind enemy lines and were useful in attacking enemy infantry. It all depended on how you used them. Not to mention that they could move through buildings. I used them to trap enemies by destroying bridges.
@summer20105707 Fortunately, you could almost always rely on the AI to attack you, even if you were really the one who started the battle. So I would place infantry and immobile units in a good defense line, then wait for the AI to come up and flank them with tanks & mech. units. Sometimes I would reverse it and flank with infantry because the AI would usually turn to fight the flanking unit. So the tank unit it was fighting 1st would then be hitting the side or rear. That often worked better.
@summer20105707 (cont.) So I got to where I could win over 90% of battles. I won France as the French and won "Berlin" (Oder river) as the Germans. But I lost patience waiting for the Berlin scenario to end so never saw the ending though I had destroyed virtually all the Russian forces. Always wondered if it says Hitler shoots himself.
So some realistic tactics with infantry was possible. They were pretty good at taking damage but couldn't inflict any. That was the main inaccuracy.
Another thing that irritated me, just because I'm a stickler for accuracy, is the HQ people. They had Eisenhower and Smith as the Allied leaders in the first 2 scenarios, when the US wasn't even in the war yet. I can't remember if they were in the Russian scenarios, but that would have been wrong too.
And for the Germans, scenarios 3 to 5 should have had Kurt Zeitzler, not Halder, as army chief of staff. In 6 it should have been Guderian.
Amasingly enough, out of all the Koie games I played, I never did like Operation Europe, and I'm the kind of guy that enjoyed "Libery or Death" and the PTO series! For me, the controls just seemed to cumbersome, and selecting the various commanders' experience ratings was simply way too much detail, and only dragged on. Only made worse by the long waits by the game to decide what to do.
Can anybody PLEASE explain to me how the hell you play this game? ugh! I bought it used so it didn't come with any instructions and I have no friggin' idea how to play it.
Wow this game is primitive. This was the gameplay when my brother yelled at me about playing it while he was at school in 1993 or 1994? This gameplay makes my brother and I the Absurd for it all! lol
Well you couldn't have done worse than me Gadare..demon.
I was Germany and I kept on attacking the D day forces with my paratroopers only that the AA guns were still in place! ha ha ha. Even worse my Panzer units were blown to smithereens by the Polish on motorcycles and grenades. Ouch!
I loved this game. It was so awesome to see all the people, tanks and other equipment. The game menu music and the gameplay music has a great feel to it, especially the Berlin campaign. Operation Europe and PTO had very weak airpower, though...
Aye, this game is a hard and very good one. And Wilhelm Josef Ritter von Thoma, uncrowned king of the motorized infantry, and panzers is also in the game!
The real challenge is to play the sides with the biggest disadvantages. I managed to hold back the german invasion of France, beaten the russian reinforcements at Kursk, secured the beaches at Normandy, and defeated the Red Army along the Oder line (I also held Ziebingen, captured Kustrin, and succesfully asked for Jagdtigers). My pride
Asking for expensive arms successfully is dependent on how you manage to minimize losses, properly suppling and keeping your units in condition (less numbers of warnings are the best), and capturing, holding, and suplying towns.
And don't forget detonating bridges if you're overwhelmed, it buys you enough time to organise supplies and manage troops.
Oh, and love the song from 1:04 onward to 2:10 (the other song after is a bit annoying). This thing is full of conviction and anticipation, a real throat-catching tune...
All 5 of us in the world who actually knew about and played this game... Koei these days is more known for making dynasty warriors, but I loved PTO and this game too.
I could never beat the first scenario as the french. You get like, 50 tanks spread over 4 regiments not even close to each other. Easiest scenario was africa as the allies. Germans/Italians never seemed to make it past the first perimeter of mines. Berlin as the germans was tricky but I had 86 Jagdtigers in Strausberg. Poor russia
the first time I beat level 1 with the french was to blow all the bridges up before any Germans made it across, and then march all of my guys to Sedan, and eventually the germans built a bridge and then attacked my whole army 1 unit at a time, and with those gurilla tactics I won. The best way though, which I recently discovered is to mass 3 powerfull battalions behind each bridge, that way they can only attack you with 1 battalion at a time against 3 of yours. Outnumbering them always works
I do the same thing, especially as the Allies in the Bulge scenario. I blow all but one bridge, separate and post my 75's there along with all of my 105's consolidated into one battalion, post my infantry straddling the river to attack any enemy engineer units, and save my more mobile armor for the counterattack. I also keep a strong infantry/paratroop force in Bastogne against enemy paratroops.
This game took forever to complete. The only scenario I couldn´t finish was the Battle of the Bulge, on the Allied side... the Germans have too many tanks!! It´s much easier with the Russians!
yea, that scenario is due to beat, best to destroy the bridges so the germans won't cross and you can try to plant landmines in the area the bridges are destroyed at. You can check the Walkthrough in GameFAQs website.
cool, me too. I like the gameplay, reminds me of advanced wars on the gba and ds. I like D-Day mission on this game, so hard but fun to play. I like the way they show war stuff like tanks, troops, etc.
I just love how this game begins.
Its like if Advance Wars was based on WW2.
