  • Excellent explanation, try keeping your arm loose during the Transformer scratch (technically what this is).

  • what a sexy mixer!! :)

  • I do not understand English as

  • your a god send!!! know one ever mentioned the curve on the fader!

  • John please get some segments on expertvillage the DJs on there arent even a quarter as good as you

  • you re the best ,, very professional tips bro !

  • dude thats transforming thats not the crab they are not even similar

yes the crab is four fingers but wot he is doin is transforming an get a good set of decks you fool

  • este no tiene ni idea de hacer scratch ni flare ni crabs ni pollas en remojo...el testing man no funciona ahora... que tienes mas videos haciendo tutoriales que Anaya multimedia y no tienes ni idea de hacer un puto flare

  • hamser style is better to

  • good stuff..

  • whered u get the t shirt?

  • as soon as he said "possibly the reason why is because Im not good at it" i turned it off...all theory no practical

  • this is a good tutorial if you know absolutely nothing about djing, as he goes through almost everything, how to used the mixer etc. i stopped watching after 2 mins cause i couldnt stand him talking.

  • jajajaj pero fito o komo te llames son 3 kortes no 4... para ke el sonido suene 4 veces son 3 kortes

  • I love all ur vids Jonathan, I've prolly watched hundreds and I've also been to your site many times and this is the first one I've commented lol. I want to thank you. You've taught me 80% of what I know as far as djing over the years. There arnt any djs around where I live and I don't have a mentor so I consider you my mentor, your the best man. Thanks:)

  • Yawn.. So you're teaching something that you can't do. Nice.

  • i think this video is fantastic, as are all 'ellaskins' vids imo, and i've been scratching for over a decade so i know how hard these things are to learn/teach/understand and i must say these videos are by far the best at explaining i've seen... keep up the gr8 work man

  • This is excellent teaching, you dont need to be the worlds best turntablist to teach others the basics, he may not be good at transform scratching but he does know how it works and thats what hes passing on on this video, respect

  • My 2 year old just sat and watched this on my iPhone hanging on every last word. (u haters must have ADD) Great close ups. Excellent teaching here.

  • talk a little bit?! you dont shut up! great vid like but fuckkkkk you explain every little thing! chill out with the talking and just get on with it :-|

  • You know, they don't call this guy the DJ TUTOR for no reason. There are a lot of people like me who are new to this, and I am personally glad he takes the time to describe every little thing.

  • i agree now, i was a begginner and just wanted to get going, ive realised how good this guy is.. you know what begginners are like.. dicks, just want to get going and dont know the basics, i was one.. sorry mate

  • you can ´t do the crab, too much talking shit

  • True... Acts speak louder than words, he's trying to teach something he can't even do, what a complete mug!

  • what a fucking wanker

  • Hey, I'm gonna teach you something that I can't actually do. Thanks.

"I'm old school" no your not, your a bell end.

  • i love fisheye

  • Dude! You have done something good there mate. you have used different learning styles to engage people..have you thought about youth work you've got the right energy. Props to you mate :))

  • what mixer is that?

  • pioneer djm

  • You remind me of Keith Flint from Prodigy, good tutorial

  • how do you get that big disc on the turn table wuts it called???

  • wow

  • got enuff decks? ;d

  • wot type of scratch sample is that im using the skiproofs at mo 1,2 and 3 thats sounds miles better

  • pmsl

I understand is goal but would have a lot more respect for him if he actually walked the walk and stopped freaking talking abought it. Hows it go? Those who cant... teach!

  • so what happens if you have a lower end mixer and dont have the crossfade curve switch?

  • without a curve control you wont really be able to get the correct crab sound . you just wont be able to cut the sound on and off properly.the curve control makes to sound drop out really close to the edge of the fader making the crab sound.

please dont listen to this bloke mate!

  • where are your vids on scratching? pro?

  • he did say that actually.....and he said he wasn't a scratch dj. he just happens to understand a lot about what's going on with it.

  • then you will suck like i did when i had a cheap stanton smx 201 {price 80 bucks}

  • This man is dam good on explain

  • how do u make your cross fader very smooth ?

  • nice t shirt

  • WTFO = Wank the fuck off

  • Ellaskins is RICH!!!!

  • Yeah i give you props man your very good at teaching i learned alot from your vids thanks =)

  • DJ Angelo UK scratch videos please anyone who is just starting out in turntablism ought to check out his videos and even if your intermediate like myself its still worth a check.

    Peace :-)

  • why do you teach to scratch if you aren't a hip-hop dj?

  • dont listen 2 all those wankers m8. im rob from aberaeron i know snips n all them! just wanna say thanks 2 u i think i finally get it!! i didnt realise that the setting on the fader made a difference, and the pressure on the thumb, why didnt i think of that!! ur an awsome teacher man keep up the good work!! n once again nice 1 m8 gna have a practice now! safe

  • i see your into the little mermaid you fuckin paedo!

  • he has a child you dipshit bastard u wish he was a pedo so he cud feel u up u quere

  • you fuckin retard, you keep trying to learn from this guy & he's even telling you he's no good, excuse me but whats the fuckin point? would you learn how to read & write from a deaf man with no arms?... no you wouldnt so kill that noise!

  • ellaskins...if you don´t get the crab try the twiddle. it´s a nice way to practice how the thumb should behave as a spring and it´s not as difficult than a crab.

  • actually stuff it

if I want a concise video i'll look elsewhere, if I want to watch an extremely helpful and indepth video from a guy who's quite passionate about DJing i'll stick with you

I posted a link of this video to help someone and they found it a great help, so despite your ramblings- we still love you, and I suppose your rambling is actually quite funny

  • Johnathon you're amazing and I love you

your video's help a lot of people blah blah blah

but seriously I think anyone that's watching a video about how to crab scratch (which is quite an advanced technique) is going to know where the crossfader is :/

and I think we're all familier with upfaders

you're a great teacher but this could have been half the length if you be a bit more concise with your tutorials

  • damn it took 8 minutes just to show the crab skratch??

  • stop moving your thumb thats your mistake you are makeing, hold your thumb steady on the fader then crab with your fingers only

  • Respect to you teaching what you've taught but whats the point of teaching something in which you arent comfortable at...

People if you're serious about scratching get DJ QBERTS DO IT YOURSELF VOL 1, It'll teach you everything about scratching and setup's (equipment etc).

  • agreed.

    ellaskin...

your good at teaching and reviewing lol. but if ya cant really scratch dont bother doin a tutorial on crab scratches! we know what the crossfader is and the curve n that. respect anyways

  • why are you guys complaining jonathan its one if not the best tutor on dj regardless of what subject he explains come on guys no other dj tells you that you can snap your fingers he is really helping out

STOP BITCHING AT THE GUY HE IS HELPING US OUT FOR FREE.

    THANX J

  • he a good tutor,a bad dj

  • gtfo u filth manc

  • shush be quiet billy no mates

  • you are the one commenting on the same video 3 times silly little loser boy. :)

  • he's showing how yo momma scratches her hairy ass

  • ellaskin don't pay attention to the haters keep teaching. Your videos are the only available resource I can find on scratchin, if it wasn't for you I would be so much worse than I am now. you fuckin rock man!

  • yeah its cus hes not a turntablist hes a dj and he said like 15 times that he wasnt good give the guy a break, but you did take quite a while to explain what the crossfader does, i think that whoever is looking for a tutorial on crab scratching which is getting quite advanced knows how the crossfader works

  • all I'm sayng it's like a tennis player dosen't teach a football player what to do.Respect for him,but stick to what you do

  • thanks for explaining the techniche has help me alot! :)

  • why's every1 being so harsh?

give him a break, he mentioned he wasn't good.

  • man you're a fucking wannabee.Stick to your house shit. You are not a turntablist.Go and play with your toys and stick with your own stuff

  • shut the fuck up you pathetic narrow-minded prick.

What the fuck are you doing to help others, that makes you better than him?

go and fucking wank over Qbert and stop watching these vids if you havent something decent to say.

    what a prick!

  • you should not be teatching people this SHIT you call scratching you fucking brain dead CUNT go and learn and practice for fuck sake you fucking CUNT AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • fuck up tosser

  • Sounds like you're "talking the talk" too. How about showing us how it's done, then?

Dig around Youtube and you'll soon find that Ellaskins is one of the best dj tutors around. He gives us clear instruction, easy explanations and sometimes a little history too.

Get the theory for the Crab form Ellaskins then go and find Q-Bert for the practical lesson.

  • @repo136 Yust as you see now! He is the best dj/tutorial guy i ever seen on internet. Dang I wanna marry him! haha

  • hes fuckin definitely walked the walk man...hes got nearly 1500 videos and 20 years experience.

lets see you walk the walk you fucking mummys-boy! dont make me sick...

  • this gay cant scratch!!!!

  • Dude, Jonathan said like 20 times that he isn't very good, even said he was a -50 on a scale of 1 to 10. He's very humbly just giving beginners help with the concept of scratching. You need to learn how to spell "guy" because that's really the wrong way to go about it. And check out these things called "apostrophes."

  • can you not...ahh thats a shame. And i would suggest against talking about yourself in the third-person, it aint good.

  • thanks man. i've been trying to figure this out on my own for a while and couldn't really understand how it was done. now i get it

  • The trick to the crab is that it's best to use either two or three fingers. Four makes it almost impossible and doesn't make your scratch any better. Also if you start the sound with the fader already open (sound playing) then you get a free click (cut off). Does that make any sense? Basiclly instead of turning the sound on with your first finger tap, you're first movement is turning the sound off with the thmumb. That way 3 fingers get's you 4 quick on offs.

  • dude check out this dj blackout dude that does the crab scratch demo on here. he does all 4 and its flawless.

  • Well that's fine but like I said, it's pointless to do 4 fingers. You can get 4 on offs with three fingers as long as you begin the scratch with the fader on instead of off. The crab is kinda played out anyway, it's much better to flare.

  • cOol!! Thanks

  • im from the Philippines. Keep it up. That is really for the begginers. thnaks

  • nice shirt.

  • 's wierd cos ive been learning tremolo on the guitar and what im understanding from this is that the movement of your fingers rapidly pushing in sucession against the crossfader is real similar to the movement you make of your fingers with the tremolo or arpeggio.

  • SHUT UP

  • Any idea what vinyl is being used?

    Jonathan?

  • Great tutorial. Finally I can understand the idea behind the crab.

  • pretty helpful tutorial man keep it up!

  • so want i you tube t-shirt

  • dj q-bert has a tutorial video too, I PREFER THIS,details an zooms are so usefull...

  • t shirt youtube wtf lol xD!

  • Dude this is really awesome! You posted this video on my birthday =D

Two requests : could you a) write somewhere, if any, the order in which we beginners should watch the videos and b) make a ultimate begginner video for people who inspire to become DJs but know nothing about it like me ! Great job, keep it up,

    PJ the DJ

  • could you please do a video showind the technics sl dz 1200 cdj...tnx...i love your videos they're soo helpful and simple..u rokk...xx djstella

  • great video!

  • Another awesome vidyo

  • cheers!!!!

  • its punk tv, as Jonathon keeps saying, not rehearsed or scripted, plus its better to over explain than not explain enough at all

  • Yeah, thats what makes jonathans videos so good.. He gets all that stuff "welded" into your head, so you dont forget..

  • By using more time to explain he saves time in not needing to answer questions of people who didn't understand. :)

  • not everybody watches all of the videos for one, so it helps repeating some things he's mentioned before, and plus I found him repeating things really helped me - that way you dont forget

  • oh yeah forgot to say Nice Mixer Buddy!

  • another great tutorial vid

  • nice vid. and yes the crab scratch is very hard i'm workin on it everyday though nic tutorial

    DJ_Tazer

  • Cool, great vid, I have been trying to master the crab and transformer. Glad you put this vid up!,THX..

  • how u get the youtube tshirt??????

  • organise a youtube convention and/or make 1000 videos :D

  • I'm not a DJ but I'd love to be in the future. It's still a treat to watch you explain things. Keep up the awesome work!!

  • Very good detail video i always wondered why my mixer had those icons on it and what they were used for ..thanks Ellaskins

  • 5* :) thanks for all the tutorials.

  • hampster for the win ^^

  • good job explaining it took me a while back in the day to get it then it just started sounding good if u have a battle mixer and ur up fades

have the buttons to make them good for scratching it makes alot easy to practice crabn with those first its easyer i also scratch the other way then u easyer for me that way eh to each there own hehe

    peace

  • Nice! Very useful.

One thing to note, though: Many scratch DJs like to reverse their crossfader to what's known as the 'hamster' position so they'd be doing the crab at the side nearer to the turntable they're scratching.

Anyway, great video, J, keep it up! 5*!
