Thanks Paul, especially for demonstrating slowly for beginners like me..;-) I wrote a jig for the Hang drum called Hang jig so trying to learn Bodhran now.
Thanks for your comments, I'm playing a 12" Metloef 'popcorn' drum - metloef [dot] com. I have about 6 or more of his drums, all very individual, all excellent. This wee 12" 'popcorn' drum was his own personal drum with which he competed in the All Ireland and is still a favourite of mine for intimate sessions and recording - For more on this style visit bodojo and look for 'top end' - cheers - Paul
Hey Paul, Rick Walker here. Nice video......really nice. I have the same question. In the style I learned, the top of the tipper causes the 2nd note of the triplet but I can't for the life of me figure out how you are getting the very rapid triplets about 1:58. As far as I can tell, the top of the tipper isn't hitting the drum and it doesn't look like you are using a finger inside of the drum (or are you)
Do you mind explaining that to this poor remedial bodhran player?
Hey Rick / Rodrigo, thanks for visiting. Those are left thumb strikes on the back of the drum in that instance, also achieved them by playing DDU instead of DUD. Between the DDs there is an upstroke grace note that can be caught i.e. DXD.U.DXD.U. It works naturally in a jig (6/8) but playing it as triplets over 4/4 works, I love crossing bar lines :).
Standard 'triplets' are simple single stroke rolls accomplished by doubling handspeed.
ok, if I heard right, this is a "top end cipin" or like he called "Bo".
this style is way better once you get ir right
but, I have a question
with an "regular" tiper you can do "triples" (hit with the top ending and the top...begining(?) of the tiper an then hiting with the top end again, but fast, doing 3 hits in a move) very ease
but, how to do that on that tiper?
I really heard the triples in this videos, i Thought he woul teach this on this video =/
I used to play sambe kerry style (using back hand for the 4th beat. Would love to jam with someone playing this way.
