  • My mind= BLOWN!!

  • Very good analysis. I think they like to tuck things like this away in their music sometimes. For instance, look up one of their new tracks, Jambi, and you might be interested to find out how the lyrics were formulated for that. cheers

  • Very good!!

  • Actually, the chorus time signature is two bars of 9/8, and then one bar of 6/8.

But I do like this explanation.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast Can you please explain that to me? I do have knowledge of time sigs, but can't count this.

  • @SeethingGreen

The entire song is in compound time signatures. The introductions and interludes are in 6/8, the verses are in 5/8 and the chorus varies. The chorus has two bars of 9/8, and then one bar of 6/8. That repeats through the chorus.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast Thanks very much. That really helped, man. Be well.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast don't forget the main riff..one measure of 9/8 one measure of 8/8 then one measure of 7/8 then repeat the order.

  • @babytweeze85

Actually, it's considerably easier to count it in two measures of 9/8, and then one measure of 6/8. If you listen, you'll hear where the accents fall, and where the pattern repeats.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast considerably easier? Yes...right? No...it's 3 sets of one measure of 9 one of 8 and one of 7. Adam's chord changes are dead on the downbeat of 1 of each measure. If you count the 2nd 5th and 8th measures in 9 the changes happen mid measure. And more to the point 987 is the 16th number in the Fibonacci sequence which is what this song is written around. 996 means nothing. I'm more inclined to believe Danny and Adam wrote it in 9 8 7 time.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast and online tabs mean nothing. They're going to dumb down the songs because 996 is easier for kids to learn than rotating times. It makes way more sense that math nerds Danny and Adam would write it 987

  • @babytweeze85

Can we stop fucking arguing about which time signature is right? This conversation is pretty much just you trying to ejaculate all over this video with your intellectual wankery.

I haven't looked at any tabs, I figured the whole song out by ear. Maybe you're right, that the entire song is focused on Fibonacci. All I know is that the way I play it sounds like how it's recorded. Who knows, maybe I don't really give a shit if it's Fibonacci or not, because it's just a good song.

  • ffuuucckk! that is just amazingly smart, and clever, and just so unexpected. i mean wow... really?

  • Mind fucked

  • Goddamn it...that's clever...

  • i dont get some of his lyrics maybe i dont get his mind

  • Im too high.

  • Not only does Tool use knowledge and thought to make their songs, but they also support their songs with meaningful lyrics that describe us as human beings, and the best way to live life.......along with some KICK ASS MUSIC! XD

  • why the fuck is it math

  • Nice Video.

The Fibonacci Spiral, is also how Divinci figured out how to draw the human skull perfectly, proportionate from a side profile.

I'm an artist, and I used to play drums. Huge tool and APC fan.

I noticed those series of boxes right away. It's funny but those are the guidelines DaVinci uses (and I've learned to use) to draw the human skull(side profile), as I said.

Davinci of course was fascinated with math, and art and all that. Really wicked stuff. Tool is amazing.

  • That was unique, which as a Tool fan I never see a song that based on Mathamatical or Fibonacci numbers, but I believe that is the most complicated song they come up with for my opinion. Tool is a kind of band which are well opened minded, intelligent, & sometimes most of there concepts are deep & difficult, but Lateralus is the kind of Album which it takes you on a journey, also they have something about spirituality which that Alex Grey was working on for Tool's concepts.

  • @NYCYuGiOhChannel in my opinion stinkfist is their biggest work of art

  • Tool are immense.

  • hEy_AÑÿÔnÊ_wåÑÑÃ_chÃt_wíth_mÊ_I_féël_s0_l0Nëly_tÓDÅy┘

  • trippy!!!!!

  • the first part of thr riff doesnt have a 9,8,7 for a time signature!!!?? cmon its so obvious he even made a pause on the last bar with 1,2 thats no way to count time signature??just listen to the beutiful music of tool dont make this weird assumptions >:)

  • @27darkstalker someone don t like maths :P

  • @outopia666 nope i love math but tool isnt meshuggah or cynic to event count it :) its just a good mainstreem band not really on the tacghnical side compared to them :)

    and i do love them

  • few mistakes man 987 is the 17th term not 16th and 1.1618 the golden ratio is not Phi that would be 3.614

  • there isn't a good time to stop listening TOOL... :S

  • Listen to the words again, some of you just didn't get it~

  • reading too much between the lines.

  • Don't ever do this to tool again, this post was as bad as fan-fiction!! DISLIKE!!!

  • @Tuskil1 What the hell are you talking about?

  • Not even the whole song--from the title, I expected a video, not a fan-fiction slide show...DISLIKE!

  • writing music is a formula. It involves the correct consonant tones and the right sequence to generate the rhythm. Then the vocals come into play using the same formula creating a harmony....just my thought no music theory studied here.

  • Since this is all math, they should teach Tool in school!!!!!!!!!!

  • @49ers1013 I say the other way around: Tool should teach us!!!!!!

  • This guy is to smart.

  • why does fibonacci numbers exclude number 4?

  • @MordirHamreth it explains it at the beginnig

  • Why is everybody complaining about this song? it written by 4 guys that have knowledge we wont even learn in the next 20 years or so. they have put together one of the most legendary songs in the world and people hate on them? seriously? you all sound like my brother who only listens to eminemm, which by the way sucks. This song has meaning and it's original. oh, it also goes into detail about everything. yeah nobody can do that in their songs can they? i guess not. only TooL. best. band. ever.

  • @HeetWav13 @HeetWav13 knowledge about what? abut writing muisc? - i agree on that; the song is a masterpiece. but trippin balls and mixing math with music doesn't mean you have the knowledge we won't have for the next 20 years or so.

  • @sad209 what im saying is these guys have gone and studied things that don't even relate to music, that is why it is so different from everybody else's. and yeah it's different on writing it too. the studies is for vocals and the writing is about the instrumental part, do ya catch what im saying?

  • this song relates to the fibonacci because the first part of the main riff is 9 beats, the second 8, the third 7, hence the 987 part of the fibonacci.

  • oh boy..Wow Maynard put the first few numbers of the Fibonacci sequence into the number of syllables in this shitty song. IT'S JUST A BUNCH OF FUCKING NUMBERS! Seriously, he could have used numbers from the phone book and it would have been pretty much the same thing. Tool has proved once again that they are a bunch of pretentious cocksuckers, Maynard's "songs" are shit, and their fans are all gullible idiots... dickwrench tooltards

  • @ck187alldayfool Dude nice one copying other people's trolling msgs. I've seen exactly that comment on an other video. You're not even a real troll! Wannabe troll! I thought trolls was the worst things on earth but I was wrong.. YOU are!

  • I don't think tool sit around thinking and righting around the golden ratio or any mathematical crap. that would loose them any feel. i think people are looking into it to much. I play guitar but hate clever dicks who start telling you about time signatures. I can play in any time signature without knowing all the theory bullshit.

  • @orezmusic its not music theory, the golden ratio is used in religion. You're misunderstanding the whole point of the song. Its telling you to open your mind to the infinite possibility that the universe holds, and to recognize the things that are larger than us.

  • @RussianCivilian you sir, are a tooltard.

  • @ck187alldayfool thanks i might take that as a compliment.

  • So this is what happens when you're on acid...

  • These guys are human. They sweat, eat, breath, shit, sleep, fuck, and do all the things me and you (hopefully) do. We al are dealt card when we are born, and we all can do anything with them. Whether you turn yourself into a multimillion dollar band, or re-invent the post-it note, we all do someting great.

Push the envelope, watch it bend.

  • yeah ok so the song could be about numbers.. then what...?

  • @golden290 well its not neccasarily about just the numbers. as far as i can tell its more about the patterns the numbers make. So the point would be is how to copy that same kind of pattern in your own life. so if the pattern would keep expanding, I would say the point is to keep expanding yourself. Always reach for the better, and keep growing. just my thoughts though you may not agree, but i would listen to the entire song, not just where this guy cut it off.

  • @stephenzimnoch oh no don't sell yourself short. That's a good look at it. And trust me. I've heard this song more times than you'd imagine hah. trying to learn to play it on guitar now actually :)

  • It's a coincidence that Tool and numbers matchup....numbers have a ryhthm...and Tool's...well...Tool's rhythm is infallible.

  • I just gotta say props on the vid, but in the song, Maynard does say, "Over Thinking, Over analyzing, separate's the body from the mind" Don't dwell to hard into Maynard's Lyrics, Im a vocalist and writer myself, and I work alot of math into my music, but would never release any info as to the reasoning behind it!! Tool is what it says, a TOOL!! Meant to guide you through whatever it is you need guidance through, sit back, put in this CD "Lateralus" and enjoy it to the fullest!!

  • 0 is the number you are looking for cause we start and end that way

  • I'll just say this.

If Bach were alive today, he would love Tool.

  • @BigBenP lol you are so right

  • Spectacular ... i always wondered why i don´t get the structure of lateralus ... even though i´m a (by techincal terms very bad) drummer .... thanks a lot for explainig. you rock ! and tool rocks for leaving something so artifically contructed sounding good !

  • Total brain fart on this one =|

  • The mind is a powerful tool if used right. Damn these guys are genious musicians.

  • What really makes this song so amazing is the fact that if I did not know that I still would have thought the song is freakin bad ass!! Music is basically sound organized in time. Simply brilliant!!

  • by far the best song ever created

  • shut the fuck up. its annoying. its pretty obvious that tool attempted to incorporate the fibonacci sequence into this album. i mean for god sakes the album is called lateralus. plus if you play the songs from the album in fibonacci sequencial order they sychronize perfectly with each beggining and ending. btw whoever hates tool because of the fans are exactly who tool doesnt want listening to them. they are shaped too much by society. if you disect life you will find out that society is false.

  • @ryanskillz44 all of it

  • @ Ryan Hm...it's pretty obvious Tool attracts a few annoying twerps too.

  • dont get me wrong... not to give you lectures... music shouldnt be analised like that in my opinion... music is to be felt.. especially tool.. most of all tool... not to be lowered to a bunch of numbers... music is not order, not a math problem... just the opposite.. its caos.. it can not be reduced to reason.. to understand it is enough for you to close your eyes and raise th volume.. if it makes you forget everyrhing else and elevate you.. then it served its purpose.. then its great.

  • @madmagikk don´t get me wrong ... i think you never tried to understand how a lot of music is made ... it´s quite important for a musician to understand the mathematical patterns behind certain music ... or you can never reproduce ... so please, shut up. blablabla....its caos..... blablabla....no, it´s not ! especially not tool !

  • hi.. im professor Dumb from the Mathematical Music University For People Who Want To Shock The World With Stupidity. I studied there too.. I felt the need to participate in this so intense discussion because i think you could be usefull in my school. I thought that could be a fine way of getting you all out of here too and let people who really love music enjoy it. I have a question also. When you people have sex do you think about fibonacci? Do you count the number of movements?

  • What are you talking about with that "9-8-7 time" business? That's not even a real thing, and if you're saying that the time signature shifts form 9/something to 8/s. to 7/s. I don't believe it does that, at least it certainly doesn't in the way the numbers in your video count. They don't even count evenly or line up with the song at all.

  • take some music theory or at least know what you're talking about before you attempt to spew your unknowledgable idiocy on people who actually have the brain power to fathom these things.

  • Well actually, if you must know, I have taken music theory classes and I do know what I'm talking about. Who are you anyway? There just is no such thing as "9-8-7" time, and if you pay attention, the count in the video is not even in time (particularly in the section that counts to 7 if you notice the random pauses it makes, which doesn't line up with any time as time does not pause). You would do well to investigate what you're commenting on before you jump down another's throat.

  • After careful review it appears that the time signature does move from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 each measure during that section of the song. BUT that is not called "9-8-7 time" as there is no such thing. Even so, I believe this was what the video tried to convey. However as you were unable to make that comment I greatly doubt that you have any idea what you're talking about. I would guess that you are nothing more than a "hardcore" Tool fan who assumed I was "dissing" them, which is highly incorrect.

  • well, i do have an idea what im talking about, ive taken years of music theory, i have a lot of experience musically. youve obviously realized that your statement was false, why continue trying to act smarter than everyone?

  • Ok that's great that you have experience, however, my statement was not false. There is no such thing as "9-8-7" time. It simply does not exist. Also, if the video was in fact trying to portray what I said, it did a pretty poor job and used incorrect terminology. If the shoe fits, I guess I'll wear it.

  • @killamanjaro17 yeahyeah ... its 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 ... i´m quite glad somebody explained ... and i think you wouldn´t had been able to ... seems like a lot of people here are really jealous of bshrules85 ability to analyse. i´m too. but i don´t start puking over his explanations by misunderstanding on purpose ...

  • The main riff goes from 9/8s to 8/8s to 7/8s, odd time signatures, study them.

  • Yeah, if you'll notice, that is what I already said. Thanks for not paying attention. Although I'm not sure why you put "s" after each one, that isn't part of a time signature.

  • I know you haven't taken any music theory classes if you want to brag about it and try to correct every single thing you can. Stop trying to get technical, if you can understand it, shut your mouth and just let it go.

  • @rafayealmeida Why is everyone's response always "shut up"? Can't anyone think of an actually intelligent thing to say? If not please shut up yourself.

  • @killamanjaro17 You obviously didn't grasp the concept. I was saying that if you knew the time signature, and you were certain, then you should just simply let it go and shut your mouth, I was emphasizing on you just letting it go, rather than you shutting your mouth.

  • to achieve something that's never been achieved and you have to keep reaching for something that you don't understand. I thought that was an incredible synchronocity." Then a friend said, "Justin, do you realize that 987 is the 16 number of the Fibonacci sequence? It's the mathematical equation for a spiral."

-- It's amazing what these guys do when they get together and make music. They didn't even plan the song this way!

  • You could find these coincidences in almost any song if you'd try

  • Comment removed

  • I"ve said it before and i'll say it again. Tool is from another planet.

  • hahaha! the drumer has shri mantra on the bass. i got big 1 on wall in my room:D

  • working in alliance with the known laws of nature produces kickass results! cool vid

  • can anyone tell me from which concert is that wonderful scenography at 0:46 till 0:54??

  • Comment removed

  • wtf they're crazy i find difficult just writing a song...they write following this crazy sequence...it's just "absurd".... :O

  • When is "spiral out" ever been a term. I would say two words is more correct?

  • Nice work.

    Hope you got an A!

  • @meginis8 yeah you are right ... this is stupid, tool sucks, and W is the smartest person ever... and you wonder why people leave "angry shit on your channel" ??

  • @meginis8

tell your mother she can suck my tool anytime

  • @meginis8 ...you are stupid. this is mathematics you must get a life outta here!!!

  • I think I have a better appreciation for math now.

  • yeah. it explains it much better than the other vid 'bout the fibonachi I've seen here previously.

good work. Lateralus to me is one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • I agree, this song has helped me to grow spiritually like nothing else I've experienced. Tool's music in general has helped facilitate my spiritual evolution. The word's just really reach me. I hope one day I might interpret how I've grown through music as they have.

  • wow this is really cool good job 5*

  • It's not even that impressive, it just sounds really cool. Tool is good at using odd times that actually sound good, instead of putting nearly random phrases at the end of others to get non sensical time signatures.

  • Damn. I love music with something more behind it.

  • LSD

  • Music is created by mathematics =) And it's awesome!

  • i wonder what it must be like to see Tool live.... and really stoned.

Man... that's gotta be a mindfuck and a half.

  • It is! ive seen then 10 times, with great nug in my pocket everytime. Highly reccommended.

  • tool on shrooms. best experience ever.

  • hahaha mannnn i wanna experience that. just watching the music videos stoned is a mindfuck!

  • @edihedihedih TOOL and SHROOMS go hand and hand

  • yeah i saw them on mushrooms. it was fucking nuts

  • Listen to the music the music comes first then the lyrics

  • amen

  • listen to the lyrics, i think you maybe over thinking and over analyzing this song

  • lmao nice

  • @dasboots23 i see what you did there, clever. the music is more important than the lyrics to tool and any band would agree

  • Mathematics rock

  • hahaha! i like this =)

  • OK so tool is a band of mathmaticians???

  • yep

  • Well they do study sacred geometry, so yes you could say that.

  • In a sense yes.

  • philosophers, the fibonacci sequence is part of something known as the golden ratio, or golden rule, and to figure out the sequence requires a bit of math so yeah mathematician/philosophy

  • correction... a band of visionary geniuses

  • It's mix of math rock, art rock, prog rock and metal, psychadelic rock and metal...

Dude it's Tool, these 4 guys are not a humans.

  • lol math rock

  • @gab136 Yes they are.

  • @gab136 maynard is fucking crazy

  • wizards

  • my friend's bro. did a report on this song and the fibonacci sequence for his music class (i think he got an "A"). random question, why is the song called lateralus?

  • good question one thing though WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

  • i think it is supposed to be a combination of words.

lateral- us. i heard this from other places that this songs is really just about how humans are staying to much in a straight line with our choses we make. and something like we need to be more like the Fibonacci sequence, meaning we differently or randomlying, as he says in the song,

  • Sorry but there's a kind of mistake about de GOLDEN RATIO 'cause the rule that said the reason is applicable to any two successive terms of F. sequence don't works about 1 and 2, 2 and 3 and 5 and 8. With 8 an 13 gives a periodic number = 1.666...

  • for the first few, yea you're right... but the further you go into the sequence, the closer this number converges on the golden ratio, and that's what I was trying to drive home... sorry if it wasn't clear!

  • ?

or they just know how to play

  • Genius!!

  • P.S. is not finish!!

  • very clever :P

  • bitch.....No is a joke:P

  • lol idc bout hidden meanings its a badass song no matter what

  • I wouldnt really call it a hidden message.

  • can anybody explain me the 9-8-7 he counted ... I don't get it

  • something about time signatures.

  • time signatures is how much time each measure of music consumes. it's measured using quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, etc...

9-8-7 because the time signatures for that particular riff are 9/8, 8/8 and 7/8. Meaning it takes 9 eighth notes to make the first bar, 8 eighth for the second, and 7 for the third.

  • ok thanks....this was my first thought .....which proves I am not a musician cause I couldn't count it........

  • you're welcome :)

  • Isn't it just 3x8/8...?

  • Well the combined meter is 12/4, but I don't think it can be reduced to a simple 4/4(or 8/8) beat.

  • justin wrote a bar of 9, then a bar of 8, and a bar of 7, and someone told him that it was the 16th number in the line for fibonachi sequence...spiral. they thought it was interesting especially b/c maynard was writing about spirals and so it all just clicked together

  • lol u can do whatever u want with #'s

and think what u want to.

  • Some things should be left unexlplained, I think.

  • The spiral in this song is alluding to the extra-physical planes, which are arrayed in a spiral pattern. By spiraling further and further out into the unknown reaches of those planes one evolves his consciousness and becomes more then he was. Hence the envelope is the charted territory of those planes and by pushing into new territory unfathomed vistas are realized, ever increasing the possibilities available to you.

  • The knowns you bring back are then used to further bend the envelope of what you thought was possible allowing further discovery. The pattern goes on and on endless as you travel the spiral of divine consciousness into infinity. The more you discover the greater the known, the greater the known the more you discover. The song is actually rather vast in it's implications once you familiarize with what is really being alluded to.

  • It's important to keep in mind that Tool is, at heart, a meta-physically oriented band and that many of their songs allude to meta-physical subjects. The skeptic who happens to be fond of their music may find it hard to accept that a great deal of their music deals with subjects that they cannot accept exist but never the less it is what a number of their songs are about and probably all of which were at least partly inspired by.

  • You could've just said Tool kicks ass.

  • this is one of reasons why i love tool so much, they are just so different to any other band and there songs have so much more depth. as this vid as proved. nice work mateXD Subd

  • I really liked this, thanks a lot, I had been wondering for a long time now.

  • Tool and Snail Shells have a lot in common.

  • lol

  • from danny's own mouth they were jammin on the idea of the song and maynard started singing about spirals......it wasn't intentional but upon reflection they thought maybe it was some sort of subconscious thing....

  • Did you find this out yourself or hear it somewhere and build on it?

  • I read a blurb about it and did a little research... there's lots of info out there on it

  • This is probably the best project ever. Congrats.

  • FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!

  • +1 for College! :D

  • ha, indeed... this is probably the most fun i've had with a homework assignment... gotta love music

  • THX 4 the fibonnacci breakdown. I knew about the time signatures but i couldnt break it down in my skull. Im fukin obsessed wit these dudes
