Rebound Phenomenon is another neurological test. It is done by having the patient attempt to move a limb (eg. flexing the arm with biceps) against resistance. When the resistance is suddenly removed, the limb normally moves a short distance and then rebounds (jerks back in the opposite direction) due to the action of the antagonists (triceps). The rebound phenomenon is (1) present in normal limbs, (2) exaggerated in spastic limbs, and (3) absent in limbs affected by cerebellar disease.
A positive Romberg test indicates damage to the dorsal column of spinal cord or medial lemniscus of the brainstem not the cerebellum. So it is a conscious proprioception problem...cerebellum is only responsible for unconscious proprioception.
Also note a positive Romberg test can be used to prove the damage is not in the cerebellum.
a Romberg test can be used to prove the damage is not in the cerebellum if it is positive only when the eyes are closed...needs to be positive even with the eyes open for it to be a cerebellar lesion.
Your doctor would do more tests to see what is causing the sensory ataxia. Things that could cause this could be severe malnutrition, neurosyphilis, etc.
(+) Pronator drift, the patient will not be able to maintain extension and supination (and "drift into pronation ) caused by upper motor neuron disease
Pronator drift is used for detection of latent paresis, nothing in common with Romberg probe

+ Romberg will never look great, nor will hemiparesis. Take all physical exams in the context of Hx - esp PMH!

a question plz.. romberg sign indicates cerebolous disease or propoception problems.. i have a discution with a teacher.
dshbmed21 3 years ago
Both, if positive with open eyes - it is cerebellar damage. If positive only with closed eyes - it is proprioceptive damage.

oops made a mistake...
Correction:
a Romberg test can be used to prove the damage is not in the cerebellum if it is positive only when the eyes are closed...needs to be positive even with the eyes open for it to be a cerebellar lesion.
