Ricky's sister Cyndi played bass on keyboard normally, but would occassionally strap on. It's fun to watch here in these vids as he concentrates at the keyboard even as she vamps.
These were UGA prodigies in a campy gay party band powered by a literally deadly secret agent guitar sound. Guitar genius Ricky Wilson with his modded 3-string bass lead guitar created the grunge sound 20 years early, became the first famous person to die of AIDS, passing the guitar to the drummer who kept up.
Thanks to the GaTech videographers who knew there was history to record here, on the eve of their blastoff into the stratosphere.
What I love about this band is none of the women, Kate or Cindy ever let their ego get carried away with them and go the "solo" route which seems to be a requirement today with bands who have female singers. They never let themselves become corporate product, although I must admit when they made their comeback after Ricky died it was pretty disappointing. Love shack was just completely overproduced corporate shiet. They dumped their rawness, spontaneous excitement to "Sell records man"
hey, i appreciate your comment. but, change is good. i was fortunate enough to meet the band backstage and they are original and dedicated. maybe the new stuff isn't appealing. that's okay. but if you luv'm, love them for what they gave you...at one time or another.
wow..when I was a teen I could only imagine how this performance could have been..so great to see it many years later...I used to screech this song in my room (my only album..lol)
Guess I'm just a little sensitive, due to those bands being lumped into the punk movement. I mean they played CBGBs, but any similarity ends there. IMO, they're definitely pop.
This is important footage. Man, I wish this band were found earlier. They missed the big money and recognition of that era that bands like Talking Heads and Blondie found. They weren't really "found" until much later in their careers by the larger public. Great stuff.
Not exactly. Their first albums in 78-80 soared them to global superstar status but guitar genius and creative spark Ricky Wilson then began a 5 year passing of AIDS. The pioneering powerchords (Lava, Private Idaho) never returned.

As said, so cool to see them so early. This song has some of the sexiest lyrics ever. I know they were being ironic/sarcastic, but still....

Awesome band! Talking Heads suck compared to them. So does Blondie.

Hey hey hey, gotta give the Heads and Blondie their props! My man David Byrne laid out some powerful tunes!

For the uninitiated...
Early B-52's bass is provided by Kate on keyboards EXCEPT when she's required for 2nd guitar... then Fred takes over on key-bass.
Not often you see Kate playing guitar.... these old vid's rock!
