In the big historical picture, Jerry Garcia's a more important guitar player, but the man who wrote and played organ on "Gimme Some Loving" is playing better guitar here. Garcia is playing meandering Garcia lines like only Jerry Garcia can.
Seventeen years ago, I was just back from Desert Storm. I never saw Garcia live. But I loved the Dead and Blind Faith. Saw Stevie rock with Eric on this tune in 2009, but this version takes the cake. I am not worthy. R.I.P. Jerry.
Fuck... I got the chills seeing Garcia smile like that..... I feel the pressure myself... I'm ready to dump this Joe Middle Class america ship soo bad...... My excuse is uprooting my kids... When maybe that should be the main reason I do it... Why let them grow up being taught the same shit I was.... I'm ready for a beech and a boat. Any one wanna come?
hard to believe that Steve Winwood and Jerry were about the same age at the time of this filming . . . . actually - I THINK Steve might have been a bit OLDER. . . . . .
Brings back great memories!!! I was at all these shows in Vegas in 94'. Also saw Traffic the weekend before in Phoenix. They were better in Phx but still great with Jerry sittin in.
@ancient...I C what you are saying, but Jerry's forte' was not cranked up heavy jams...rather, long winding and rolling melodic riffs. Although he WAS at the end of the road here, I still think that he was...in character with his humble respect for other talented musicians...laying back and letting Winwood have Center Stage. Having seen Jerry live and on vid/dvd a thousand times or more, I can tell you that the look on his face was one of awe and appreciation of the moment !
..... I think it is what is calle "GETTING INTO IT " ( !!!! ) The blues cannot be played too slowly . Time allows for more improv w.o. seeming too 'busy' , and the bass GETS DOWN > I love it ! Jerry -- I wasn't a big fan -- BUT -- miss you ... Joey
@thedeadbeats You MUST be a Garcia Worshipper. Garcia's performance here on this particular song was absolutely PATHETIC. Winwood recognized it too. He had to bail out Garcia from his WEAK attempt at a solo by overpowering his Guitar. Garcia looks like he's fuckin High. Probably did'nt even realize he just made an ASS outta himself in front of about 50,000 people. Don't get me wrong, NORMALLY Garcia's cool in my book. But, He ABSOLUTELY was fuckin up BAD here.
Thanks for posting.Lifted me out of a bad mindfunk.
