This episode was a good one because it hit on a child hood fear. I was always scared of shop dummy's when I was a kid and thought when you turned your back they would attack you and turn you into them.
no less. I imagined that there would be a touching moment where Clive would finally meet the Doctor and maybe get a ride somewhere before returning to his family. I loved the conspiracy theory bit too, my friends and I sometimes hold evenings dedicated to those theories and having a bit of a laugh :)
I enjoyed the episode a lot, mostly for the reasons you mentioned in the review. My problems were that Rose didn't notice her boyfriend looking really out of the norm and especially the ending, the way she just dumped him like a bag of old potatoes. I thought he was more than sweet to her so I just couldn't understand what would make her act like that. It let the episode down for me a bit, when I was really into it until then. // I loved Clive and was sad to see him die, in front of his kids
One final point: What about the Doctor? I LOVE Ecclestone's Doctor, but in this episode we see him not caring at all that Mickey is in danger, and calling humans a bunch of 'stupid apes'. This doesn't make me hate him, it just adds flaws and interest to his character. Rose's character is flawed too, but that's what makes it realistic. Female characters are often written to have no flaws (the 'strong female') and that bugs me a lot because it's hard to identify with them.
She does leave Mickey, but only when the Doctor mentions the time machine. She probably thinks she'll be back in 10 minutes. Maybe her relationship with Mickey is going nowhere and she feels trapped? We don't know. And just because she saw moving plastic doesn't mean she automactically believes in time travel, which is FAR more of a stretch. (sorry to make this so blunt, limited comment space :( )
You've pointed out some flaws in Rose's character, but I still don't see why you find her so unlikeable. She has a mum who can provide for her, but also who nags her incessantly when Rose loses her job through no fault of her own. She has a boyfriend who is affectionate with her...well, true, but to be honest in the opening episode I found Mickey a tiny bit sleazy. ('don't check my internet history!' nice. ^^) He becomes a lot more likeable, and so does Rose.
MrTARDISreviews, when you said the music was too loud, I dont think that it is murry golds fault. he could have composed the music as loud as he could the EDITING was the fauld.
anywhay it would be an honour if you could review my series epsiode by episode.Hope we can be friends as well
@DoctorDWho Oh no, Murray Gold is amazing at doing what he does, but the sound editor sometimes get it wrong. Not just the volume but sometimes the timing. And review your series? What does that mean?
@MrTARDISreviews right yes thank you for that. like you are doing for the main series of doctor who. it would be great to get reviews of the one and only. if you are too busy like you said in your FAQ's let me know
@MrTARDISreviews Well, she seemed to me to be at a sort of low point in her life where she didn't seem to have much of a future ahead of her. I would imagine that it's hard to care in circumstances like that.
I really didn't like this episode, you know. I didn't love Chris' Doctor, and I thought a few scenes were just stupid and laughable (like that part in Rose's place where The Doctor tries to pull the Auton hand off her face, he wasn't even TRYING to pull it off).
Your look of pure shock at the beginning was so right. I laughed HARD. It must be tough to review the shows and pretend you don't know all the stuff that eventually happens.
I thought rose was ok but as time went on I just didn't like rose I'm sorry but I just didn't. Also did you gloss over scream of the shalka and the fact that the bbc was gonna put the shalka doctor as the official ninth doctor but because of the new series that he was made unofficial?
@MrTARDISreviews Thats great to hear, it was a great little adventure and I wish they had done more with him, even if he wasn't official. They could have easily done a few audio stories and written stories and listed him under the Doctor who unbound audio adventures. Even paul cornell has nicknamed the shalka doctor as his "unbound" doctor.
When I first heard Graham Norton's voice, I didn't know who he was. I thought it was just some random guy. But I watched it again four years later and I was like "hey, that's Graham Norton"
Eccleston as the Doctor is defintive, he was the Doctor who got me into it and he got me hooked, I think the moment that got laughs all around and I remember this from the first time it was on back in 2005 was when Mickey got eaten by the wheely bin. I do agree with you that Rose can be a bit of bitch really, possessive, jealous no ambitions, but I love the socks off of Billie Piper and I can't help but love the character of Rose. Great review, I look forward to the next one
@Barneystudioz The moment that got me hooked was the "run for your life!" line. The timing and delivery was perfect and hilarious. Billie Piper is great, i just can't stand her character
A bit odd that sometimes you talk in past tense, then future tense, then present tense and fast-forward the story yet still wonder what will happen...Wibbly-wobbley timey wimey review.
Mickey...caring? He'd rather watch the football at the pub than be concerned about his girlfriend, then he told Rose to leave the Doctor to die. Yeah, that's caring for ya.
@dbvixxen If he wasn't caring then he wouldn't have come with her to Clive's house or tried to phone her non-stop after he discovered his girlfriend was nearly in an explosion
@MrTARDISreviews Hm, this is true...though I still think telling Rose to leave a stranger to die kinda trumps all that. (Sure, we know he's the Doctor and can handle himself, but Mickey doesn't.) I still have the impression that at the beginning, Mickey was a useless lump that deserved to be left behind. Thankfully, he gets the chance to grow and become really great.
@dbvixxen Considering whatever Mickey went through after being eaten by a bin to being found under the London Eye i'm not surprised that he wanted to get out of there. Sure, Mickey isn't perfect but NO-ONE deserves to be left behind for a complete stranger.
I have serious nostalgia for this episode. Eccleston's Doctor (at the time, THE Doctor) got me hooked almost immediately. (Mysterious hero + killer mannequins) x the storytelling possibilities of space-time travel = AWESOME.
And you're right; Rose is - and has always been - a bitch. It's quite an ironic name really. I just don't understand how she didn't notice anything remotely strange about Mickey's behaviour or appearance.
great one mate i agree 100% on this one lol but heres the qeation which ones better spearhead or rose??? :P personaly id go for spearhead but rose is still awsume :)
@ThatIndieGeekGuy I think that those 2 stories are too different to compare. They both have different objectives and the Auton focus is different in both
@MrTARDISreviews ohhh good answer :P lol and your right, but personly id still rather watch spearhead because of the auton focus. and cuz im not the biggest fan of rose (the charcter) but owell lol
Yay for Ace! (All time fav companion)
