Honestly, I was in the Sonic Boom from 88-89 in the trombone section and I don't EVER recall any physical hazing incidents. I don't know if this is something that gain speed in the 90's going forward. The upper classmen would get in you face and yell at you or PT (physical therapy) you until were utterly exhausted, but no hitting, kicking, or pushing, nothing physical at all. So, I'm extremely shocked that this has become the recent New's highlight in regards to HBCUs. Sad.....
i remember when i was in my marching band......i enjoyed it so much but then they tried to haze me........i quit right afterwards its not that serious i love playing but not if it means to put myself under no control and pain changes you into a nasty person.
on a brighter note i have to laugh that the footage of OSU's band was used when the narrator said how some bands are predictable and boringhahahahahahahahahaahahaha

@showtyme213 i was hazed but i had a good section leader who didn't let it go too far.He looked out for us compared to other sections, we our hazing was light so like i said it depends on each section in each band, no one band is the same.I know for somebody that not a bandsman it sounds stupid but i had the most fun in the band that ever had in my life. the happiest part of my life was when i was in the band, so for me it was worth it. I knew what i was getting into.

I got my azz beat back in 1995 at Alabama A&M but I made it and glad I did I know I will always be a part of the band but that kept me from going back the next year because I could not see myself doing that type of stuff to someone else I didn't know anything about crabbing when I went to A&M so when they beat my azz for the first time I can say this it really took something out of me and Im so glad I didn't do it to nobody like it was done to me R.I.P Robert Champion.
As a AA male, I do my best never to take a racial stance at ANYTHING. This is no exception. Hazing is wrong, absolutely wrong no matter what race. If it's done anywhere, it needs to be addressed and it needs to be dealt with. There's no feasible way you can defend hazing, and for anyone who tries you really need to assess yourself as a person. These are people's health and lives on the line. Final thought, traditions such as these are things that are made to be broken. Got to do better.
Just think about up coming Musicians an how 9:00-9:26, saddness,depression, will effect them, hazing is the reason why most bands aren't the size they use to be an now this generation of young adults are snitches or what ever you want too call them but now days their is always a student that will take this as they are being harm just for fun or too cross but everyone thinks different an now you have a Virginia Tech Case on your hand all because this hazing is now overrated.....

As a blessed member of the World Famed Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band, I can tell you that this documentary was terribly researched, and mostly lies. WE SIGN THE CONTRACT....WE UPHOLD THE CONTRACT! NORFOLK LIED BIG....got buddies in they band that have been a victim, so they can keep that. As far as JSU and SU sucking, pardon....but NORFOLK (the "great") gets most of their swag from JSU, SU, us, etc......THE SWAC is where the HBCU bands gain influence...real talk
some skools do take it out ofbounds....my skool dont do face, leg or stomach shshots, and mostly petty stuff lke doin somethin emarassin or humiliatin(to fellow crabs). bsides i think norfolk does do hazing just not as intense so it can be found out. bsides in ur marching band u gotta earn ur spot on the field and prove u can take it both mental and physical pain

I just became a NSU fan recently they have a great sound and some nice arrangements.......BUT the S and the Boom are what other bands strive to be..OH YEAH DREAM CLASSIC NSU v.s. UAPB
While I will agree that blacks in general are targeted within the media, when it comes to some of the worst situations, this still does not give the HBCU's the ok to treat their fellow brothers and sisters in this very disrespectful way. Going to an HBCU is supposed to mean something. These hazing issues needs to be addressed.
As always the media presents an issue out-of-context (notice the dancing/skit highlights minus any real musical stand performances) , and finds the most ignorant person to explain his point of view on the subject. Hazing is not just an HBCU issue, it's an NCAA issue overall. HBO and Mr. Gumbel could have presented a piece on band history, accomplishments or preparation, but they chose the sensational route, typical trash media.

I got my azz beat back in 1995 at Alabama A&M but I made it and glad I did I know I will always be a part of the band but that kept me from going back the next year because I could not see myself doing that type of stuff to someone else I didn't know anything about crabbing when I went to A&M so when they beat my azz for the first time I can say this it really took something out of me and Im so glad I didn't do it to nobody like it was done to me R.I.P Robert Champion.

As a AA male, I do my best never to take a racial stance at ANYTHING. This is no exception. Hazing is wrong, absolutely wrong no matter what race. If it's done anywhere, it needs to be addressed and it needs to be dealt with. There's no feasible way you can defend hazing, and for anyone who tries you really need to assess yourself as a person. These are people's health and lives on the line. Final thought, traditions such as these are things that are made to be broken. Got to do better.

Just think about up coming Musicians an how 9:00-9:26, saddness,depression, will effect them, hazing is the reason why most bands aren't the size they use to be an now this generation of young adults are snitches or what ever you want too call them but now days their is always a student that will take this as they are being harm just for fun or too cross but everyone thinks different an now you have a Virginia Tech Case on your hand all because this hazing is now overrated.....

@DatBoiLow4 ! was haze my 8th grade year after i done a year on my future high school band meaning i became a part of a high school band my 7th grade year, i was beat with old instruments, combat boots, etc......., i had 3 heart failures but not one time did i open my mouth an i've done it my self but after that year i left it alone i gained my respect an that was the end of me, 3 of those 12 people were my own family members an seeing blood while yu go too the bathroom isnt goodddd

If you have never been a part of a Show Band, I expect you to not understand! One thing is true, too much of something is never good! With that being said one can speak up(within) ur section! now the two by four was a little much! I can only imagine the pain because taking would is a beast! Nonetheless, once it's over you'll have so much Pride for the organization and your section as a whole! Hazing is more so bonding! It brings u together creates memories makes you think and put u back in the

Give us an example of the type of hazing that you're talking about, that will make a "member's mind to fit the values of the program". What type of hazing achieves that?

Some people have went over in their individual sections & some have not but if u are a beast on whatever u play that's a person I respect before I respect someone who can't play whether they went over or not & amazingly some of the worse hazers in the band are the ones who can't play!!!

Look this is true but I feel like in order o be better you gotta go thru something. Hazing does build character you just have to know when to draw the line. But what ppl outside the band dont understand is that everyday at practice could be seen as a haze. You wanted to be apart of the band so get with it or get lost!

We gotta stop allowing these crooked reporters and their tactics of getting information from our people to persist. This guy acts and sounds like he really cares about the guy who did the hazing, but I'm so certain that he's just about the agenda of crushing our beloved tradition of HBCU bands no matter what extent . I'm a believer in the fact that sometimes hazing goes too far in the band, but to the point that reporters catch wind of it, their job is to go for ratings and awards. I hate it.

As a blessed member of the World Famed Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band, I can tell you that this documentary was terribly researched, and mostly lies. WE SIGN THE CONTRACT....WE UPHOLD THE CONTRACT! NORFOLK LIED BIG....got buddies in they band that have been a victim, so they can keep that. As far as JSU and SU sucking, pardon....but NORFOLK (the "great") gets most of their swag from JSU, SU, us, etc......THE SWAC is where the HBCU bands gain influence...real talk

some skools do take it out ofbounds....my skool dont do face, leg or stomach shshots, and mostly petty stuff lke doin somethin emarassin or humiliatin(to fellow crabs). bsides i think norfolk does do hazing just not as intense so it can be found out. bsides in ur marching band u gotta earn ur spot on the field and prove u can take it both mental and physical pain

While I will agree that blacks in general are targeted within the media, when it comes to some of the worst situations, this still does not give the HBCU's the ok to treat their fellow brothers and sisters in this very disrespectful way. Going to an HBCU is supposed to mean something. These hazing issues needs to be addressed.

As always the media presents an issue out-of-context (notice the dancing/skit highlights minus any real musical stand performances) , and finds the most ignorant person to explain his point of view on the subject. Hazing is not just an HBCU issue, it's an NCAA issue overall. HBO and Mr. Gumbel could have presented a piece on band history, accomplishments or preparation, but they chose the sensational route, typical trash media.

Then they call out SU, JSU, AAMU, Grambling, and almost every other HBCU band like we're just violent ass black people... u dont see Ohio state, Jacksonville State, Georgia Tech, or Florida State doing what we do on the field... Puttin Norfolk on a higher level than SWAC schoolS fall back...
