Yeah, when a bunch of fast strumming notes that are not green or red come up, hold that notes corresponding button and simultaneously tap the green and red note buttons. This should allow you to hit more of the notes, thus keep you from failing. As for green and red notes, you have to press those (although for red sometimes pressing green and red will work, it doesn't all the time. It can actually cause you to fail if you're not careful).

yeah thats the trouble im having, greens and reds. For the metallica song I can get by that by just using my hand to tap the green, but on the dead kennedy's song its much more difficult. So I've tried using the guitar controller to do the intro and then switching to the standard but its sooo frustrating :/

Yeah, keep at it. All the tier songs can be cleared on expert with the controller, though the song One will give you a fair amount of trouble. :)

Well, it's most definitely possible to hit them, I'll show you and more people if I ever get a camcorder, but anyway I've been playing with the controller since about mid November of 2007. Guitar Hero 3 was the first guitar hero game I purchased, but I've always had a interest in the series itself.

I don't recall having any button held down when I played it, I can assure you that this was with the controller though. Although I can play expert songs with the guitar, I can't get as high of a score as I can with the controller. Perhaps with more practice this will change though.

actually no. its called a pull-off dude. they work with the controller. you don't have to necessarily hit every note. like in the TTFAF intro on the controller you can hold green the whole time. just like on guitar.

they do work. look at RaythebestMBU's videos. he uses a standard controller and he's FC'ed 12 songs. on one video he recorded his hands too. also, try parts like in Black Sunday and other songs where its like GRGRGRGRGR etc... hold green and tap red when you need to. you'll hit them. another easy place to test it is Bulls On Parade. after you hit the 1st green keep it held down and just hit orange. i'll even try and record it if this doesn't convince you.

Actually, you can easily "finger" the buttons in this song. If you were amazing, then you would easily be able to do it. Songs like Through the Fire and Flames you can't do with a standard controller. Virtually any hammer-on and pull-off can be done with a standard controller.
