Barenboim is puffed up so has become his piano... totally out of framem, too jumpy, no clarity and octaves! I know the times changed and all but Chopin is light as a feather and should never be performed in such self-orgasmic way. I repect Barenboim with Liszt,Beethoven, even with Bhrams but he seems far too heavy for Chopin...I"d suggest Rubinstein or Zimerman in that matter.peace
You don't have to be able to play like a concert pianist to know that this is not Barenboim's best work. This performance is a mess, and I'm sure Barenboim would admit to it.
...he sounds like somebody who has been conducting for a long time, but not playing the piano in public...he is hearing it all in his head, but not really what the instrument is putting out...compare this to how Rubinstein, Horowitz, and Richter sounded when they got older...not like this, because they never stopped playing in public...
I think you're wrong while being right. "Slower because Barenboim is aging", I think this statement is perfectly true. When you're young you want to make career and want people to notice you, and you get a thrill of playing fast.
When old, and succeed in career, I think you begin to see music in an entirely different way! You've had enough 'kicks' when playing fast, and nothing to prove
Many famous pianists seemed to play slower, but with more passion when they grew old :-)
too noisy and no clarity something unusual of baremboim he is usualy the best, he probably wasnt having the best day when he played it

A tad slow, but Barenboim seems to be very relaxed while playing.

Wow, you must be seeing alot of Piano players in China!

@AntiCharitwoGroup Glad you liked it! The tempo was slower because Barenboim is aging...
brycew53 6 months ago
@brycew53 I think age is not a factor of slower playing . I believe it's just the way he likes to play that piece. Not that he cant play it faster.
Koymbi 4 months ago
@Koymbi No, because I heard a video when he was much younger - he was much faster.
brycew53 4 months ago
@brycew53 well, if the pianist is aging, he is capable of reading the piece in a deeper sense... :)

So much I like DB in Chopin's nocturnes , concerning this Op 53 , I prefer Horowitz or Katchen.

Do you have Alicia de Larrocha playing this? Any chance you have an Ashkenazy video as well?
