When steve and john have worked together from Acolyte days up to now they certainly have made some sweet memorable music. Just the two together on the Eric Satie pieces c.d. showed their skill to good effect.
A greatr composer a real musician, soloing he always plays the right notes in his guitar not hundreds of notes like other guitarists that want to impress and think that more and faster is better.
This track encapsulates everything that is truly awesome about progressive rock. Hackett is one of the two or three greatest guitarists of all time, no one else sounds like he does. I'm so, so thrilled to see a live performance of this masterpiece!!
@skintrade And Steve didn't like Tony's, Mike's and Phil's direction of music either, let alone the way they started making Genesis a Pop General Dancing Music, Steve is and was right and He's proven it, good thing He got rid of those guys and created His own dream ... Besides Tony was always jealous of Steve's creativity and the driven force of his arrangements in the making of those old Genesis Masterpieces ! Otherwise tell me something real and good about Tony Banks !
@skintrade From what I've read, Tony didn't dislike Steve, but it seemed like Tony was a bit of a control freak and Steve had a hard time dealing with it.
The interplay between Magnus and Hackett is f-ing superhuman. A great composition, with awesome use of tension & release. I'll never forget seeing this and all my other Hackett faves at the Roxy/ Hollywood in 1981. ALL HAIL!!
you should checkout M-Tron by M-Audio. It is the most accurate mellotron software for keyboards there is. I love the software, and it is only $100,,,,,
I love 8 voice choir, flute, strings, and almost any setting the mellotron has. You can almost make any musical melody sound that much better with a mellotron added in. It makes acoustic moments beautiful and meloncholic, intense moments epic, and I wish they would mass produce them again. I seen a video on here of a new prototype of the mellotron being played by Jordan Rudess, and another video of a baby mellotron. It is killer to see they are getting back into the ears of people again...
The Lamb is one of the greatest concept albums of all time, and by far the most emotional and dark Genesis album written. The album has darkness, meloncholy, melodic beauty, humor, and great instrument solos done by Hackett and Banks. It is a very well balanced album that flows very nicely.
HOLY SHIT, "Jacuzzi" has mellotrons. I love that fucking instrument....
I love that whole album to. "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight", "Firth of Fith", and "Cinema Show" are aesome songs. "I know what I like" is kind of wishy washy with me. "The Battle of the Epping Forest" is 50/50 with me. I like the Lamb the best....
That is a very great way of putting it. I feel their most solid lineup was with Gabriel and Hackett in the band. I love the 1970's Genesis, but the 1980's-Now is barely tolerable. The Lamb is one of my favorite albums of all time...
Yeah but I also read in a interview awhile back that he was not digging the direction the band was taking. Even Collins said they were like FUCK IT, LETS MAKE SOME MONEY AND SELL OUT. Even now Hackett still has more prog then pop in his sound...
he was their guitarist from 1970-1977, he played on Trespass, Nursery Crhyme,Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound,The Lamb Lies down on Broadway, Trick of a Tail, and Wind and Wuthering. He is one of my favorite guitarists, very underrated on all levels. He quit Genesis because he dod not like the music they were producing for the And There were 3 album, and he did not like their attitude towards the music. He felt more artistic then money and fame driven....
I'm an aging YES, Genesis and Rush fan and my daughter was a Whamette when she was young.....yes I know, but she is my daughter and anyway she's better now.
For her 25th birthday suprise I took her to The Oxford Playhouse to see SH in concert, she was amazed with his guitar playing. As the Playhouse is smallish venue he was able to talk with the audience all the way through the night, he ended up asking the audience for reqeusts and the band then played them.
wow how cool is this!!!! i got into Steve Hackett via Rush and this track is so much like the stuff on Moving Pictures/ Permanant Waves - love it!!!!!
Yeah man I remember Alex in an interview mentioning this tune and how much Steve Hackett was a huge influence but never heard this tune .. So cool to finally hear it and hear the influence. Another Rush song- "No One At The Bridge" on Caress of Steel Alex said shows his affection for Steve H.'s playing as well! :-))
Great track. for me, Phil Collins turned Genesis into his backing group from 86; onwards and Invisible Touch for me is appalling and not worthy of Banks or Rutherford but each to their own- I have all the Hackett solo cds and his period with Genesis is damned good.
True but listening to them evolve was fantastic. I loved the 74-78 period the best but I couldn't live without Tonight tonight tonight, Domino and Dreaming while you sleep type songs
I think it was the first to use the Linn Drum Machine, which became the benchmark for drum machines in the 80s. It was the first standalone programmable drum machine to use high quality samples (digital recordings of real drums).
I think he learned to play that way when soloing. One of his trademarks is that he plays lots of slides in his solo lines, especially when he's using scales. And that particular kind of fingering contributes to the uniqueness ofhs sound and phrasing (look at 2'23"" in the video).... anyway, he uses the fourth finger when playing chords or classical pieces...
Thanks for posting these -- I've never seen them before. This and the other Montreaux vids are all instrumentals as far as I can see. Was Pete Hicks not brought along for this?
Great, thanks for the post! I saw this line up live in Oslo in 78 or 79, and was blown away. I've bought some of Steves dvd's and I get the feeling he had more fun on stage then than he does now, he looks a bit restrained and bored these days...
Great improvisation from all the players. The bass also sounds so good! Steve Hackett's amazing guitar skills are once again shown in this video. By the way, was that Steve's brother John on the flute? His playing was really nice.
Me old bandm8, Johnny on drums! Good soul, if there ever was!

It must be great to be in a band of that stature with your brother. They look like they're having a blast.
