I remember when I was young, I really didn't understand what exactly was going on in this scene...all I knew was that mouse was dead. But I guess since I'm older now, I actually understand the stories (and jokes) of some the old animated movies I watched as a young child.
Ain't that the way it usually goes? Especially if it's a movie you watched with your parents and didn't understand why they laughed at a certain part and then you see it when you're older you're like "oh...oh!" lol
@shortandsweetable OH yeah, I know just what you mean. A little thing of mine is to go back on all those old films from your childhood and watching them again. I found that I had An American Tail on VHS today! So I went back and watched it. Amazing how much I remembered!
I swear that Honest John is based off an actual Irish political figure at the time who would write in "ghost votes" of the dead to support his campaign. Didn't the guy in "Gangs of New York" do the same thing?
anyway, wow this scene is so much more meaningful as an adult; I finally pick up on the classist views being said. I think all I was really interested in as a kid was watching the liquid sizzle holes through the floor as it was poured into his glass, lol.
I never realized how lecherous "Honest" John was watching this as a kid. I love it when animators put in items that adults will get but kids don't always.
@Natikle people feel they need to protect their children to such an excessivement now a days that they end up missing out on really great things including this.
Because this was picked right out the history books. I mean some added flare and color were painted here and there to cover some the nastier parts, but that's raw late 1800's New York right there.
Yeah, I wish today's kids would be raised well enough and be brave enough to mature faster mentally and psychologically like we did when we were kids.
LOL, I remember that from like 20yrs ago. Amazing that this movie's been out even longer than that!
It's worth noting that its success was a smash breakthrough for feature-length animation--- and wouldn't be outdone until "The Little Mermaid", three years later. Some say this film is responsible for spurring the Disney summer blockbusters of the '90s.
Also, its in-house successor "The Land Before Time" did extremely well as well.

Why can't kids movies today have decent storylines and characters such as this?
Natikle 3 years ago 75
Because all the producers care about is money, they'll produce any old rubbish and expect us to like it. I want more movies like An American tail!
