  • laim

  • they wont chime like the aluminum...

  • its actually not all that ugly and the parts qould be quite easy to find... maybe you just dont like electronics.. i have a few hard drives laying around. you could always pick some up at a used electronics store. and to the question "why would you even make one of these" some people take pride in their own work rather than picking something up from say, Walmart. thats why you would make one of these. its a weekend project.. it doesnt have to have a reason behind it.

  • @d2kool594 amen!

  • @d2kool594 I made one before, there actually pretty nice when done, mine wasn't like his though >.> So it was kinda ugly, but they do have a nice sound, and those magnets in em are great. Very powerful.

  • "like this enormous 2.5 gig drive!" LOL epic fail

  • Caviar 22500 is a 2.5 GB harddrive, and the physical drive is enormous.

  • nerd's wind chimes

  • Nerds are ftw. They make the world all sparkly and they make shiny new things for us to play with - like iPods. >_>

  • Your name is Mr. Einstain, you got no room to talk(don't know if your name is really Einstain, or a failed try at spelling Einstein).

  • Get a life man hes uploading videos to us to make entertantming stuff

  • Hey can u make a simple radio controlled plane ?

  • lol, i got bored so i took apart a spare 40GB PS3 HDD but the screws were star shaped so I ripped it apart but when I tried taking the disk out it wouldnt so I hit it with a hammer not knowing it was glass

  • Those star shaped screw heads you are mentioning are called Torx screw heads

As for the PS3 hard drive, the PS3 uses a standard laptop SATA hard drive, there is nothing PS3 specific about those hard drives (I would know, I replaced a hard drive in a PS3 twice)

  • You cant use CD? lol

  • Hard drives are NOT made out of glass, just like Kipkay said in the video they are made out of ALUMINUM (with a magnetic coating), a hard drive contains no glass whatsoever

  • when i smashed it certainly seemed like glass

  • Was it a Hitatchi? I have heard that Hitatchi hard drives have glass platters, but the majority of hard drive brands out there use aluminum (or some other metal) for the platters

IMHO, glass platter hard drives are risky as the slightest bump could cause it to shatter, then you lose all your data unless you have a backup, I don't think there's an advantage in using glass versus aluminum, probably just cheaper

  • my dads friend made a clock out of one,it was really cool!

  • Isn't the disc covered with platinum? I think that wind chime is some kind of worthy.

  • I would doubt it (I guess it's possible if it's magnetic), but I would doubt that companies like Hitatchi, Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate and Maxtor would spend that much money for platinum coating, then sell it at a reduced price

  • he should have drilled holes in the ones hanging too. it looked kinda bad with the string tied around it

  • You are so crazy, wich your my dady :(

  • omg 10k rpm throw away? give me!!!!!

  • he said it crashed tho so it would still be useless

  • awesome hack and is the first hard drive you opened actually 2.5GB of total space!!??

  • it was lol, i found a 200mb drive the other day at work, im not sure if it was exactly 200mb but it was around there

  • lol, i still have a 5.25" floppy somewhere :P its even less then 200mb :P

  • old!

  • old!

  • lol that windchime is so derro..

fishing line plus bunch of metal discs.. looks like something you would find in a trash can

  • sweet love ur videos

  • Queria entender o tar do Ingles!

    Paulo Audie

    Dourados, MS - Brazil

  • I opened my hard disk before seeing this... it was awesome cos it was gold! (well it looked like that, its probably bronze or gold plated).

  • ultrastar.... oh the famous "DEATHStar" drives. hehe! :D

  • =O how do you come up with an idea like this in the first place? I would of never thought to use old HDD's as wind chimes! =P

  • sir why i could not saw that hard drive in my computer hacking.

  • it sort of looks like junk in the end :(

  • not bad

  • I'd rather recycle.

  • hey were did you get the casio tv at? radioshack? cuz i so want one now

  • uly stuff

  • KipKay you should make a hard drive speaker id like to see you do that.

  • hitachi and ibm has glass disks...

  • yeah i learned that the hard way. i was trying to pry open a laptop hard drive and had it shattered in my face lol

  • poor lil hard drives :'(

  • or u can use a bunch of old disks!

    (thats wat i did)

  • what mean

  • soooo kip when is thew video of the nuclear bomb shelter out of a coffee can a hard drivea 2X4 couple transitors and a hobby box going up?

  • What a waste of a 10k RPM drive.

  • When your drive crashes or gets corrupted, there's not much else you CAN do with it. I'd rather do this than throw it away :P

  • Very nice video, but there was NO sounds to suggest it was a nice project to have "hanging" outside.

  • Yo spitgalore..... turn your speakers on and listen for the chime sounds starting at 3:27

  • Yes, you are correct. Those are exquisite tinkling sounds. I've got to hang one over the ground-hogs entrance.

  • what did you do!

  • i took the disc and cut a 4 point star out of it and make a ninja star and grinded the end to sharpen it and it cut wood like butter

  • Hi its Kip Kay from Make magazine. Over the years Ive acquired used toilet paper wads that I spent hours looking through public restrooms to find. Today I'm going to teach you how to make them into an edible wind chime that will annoy your neighbors to the point of suicide.

  • or until they eat the chimes.

  • haha!!! dude your the funniest dude ive met on youtube hahahaha omfg ahaha to the point of suicide hhaha

  • nccccc oh, crap, man. Now, that is hilarious! I can't even read through it without laughing. More, please!

  • Kind of !!

  • fala serio..................

  • Lol

    "Aloominum." :P

I thought that Hard drives were thicker than that, but they look just likeCD's! Also, which part was the uber magnet? I couldn't see it....

  • umm isnt that a total waste of money?

  • Not if they don't work

  • what are you planning to do with you crashed hdd?

  • Nice one Anik04

  • Filmaddict23, those comments would say: "You have no life!"

  • humongous 2.5 gb lol

  • does any1 call this a project?? its so lame...

  • I call it a project.

You can call tons of things a project. It just depends on what sparks your interest.

Hard drive platters are very, very glossy so depending on how light hits them as a wind chime is pretty cool too.

  • Some drives platter can be make of glass, don't you use them?

  • The glass ones would shatter when you drill them. So if you were to try this project I would suggest wearing safety glasses and gloves when messing with the platters.

I don't know how to tell the difference between the glass ones and aluminum.

  • not necissarily (is that how you spell it?) if its not tempered it won't break and even if it is, it still might not shatter
