In the early years, PJ's artistry was so electrifying and dynamic that people weren't sure how to approach it and from a journalistic standpoint, probed her with "what made you this way" questioning. I don't think they were ready then to handle such a fearless artist doing what no one else at the time was. Her long career now shows her true artistry and that she had a bigger picture from the very beginning. She's a rock star, yes, but she's also a fantastic true visionary.
sometimes i just can't stand bands like oasis and coldplay will be a relevant part of the music history in the future while pj harvey is so underrated. i mean, if you take a look at her songs, her discography and the way she acts and the way she constantly evolves as an artist... let's get serious, this woman belongs to all those legends club, david bowie, jim morrison... i'm afraid she's a bit like those painters that never sold a painting in their lifetime and now are considered geniuses.
@danisanchez85 yeah man. people say Madonna is the Queen of Re-Invention, and while I do have respect for Madge, I look at someone like Polly, and it's pretty clear PJ deserves that title much, much more.
@danisanchez85 Just my opinion, but I think one of the reasons she is underrated or goes relatively unnoticed by the mainstream is because of what she mentioned in the interview; she doesn't write songs for the masses, she rights them for herself. When she was relatively popular in 90's, her songs were more in tune with the music that was popular at the time. As she grew, her music changed but it didn't change to what became mainstream. I would venture to say she probably doesnt care either.
I don't see a music industry "product" here or a contrived persona (unlike you know who....)Quite evident is her intelligence, talent & honesty.. trust that she will say what's important to her to express -then change gears.
She sums up her life and the meaning of life (very characteristically- in my opinion) generally, in the last sentence of this interview. "I do what I like to do, what I am compelled to do, and not many people can do that." Wow, that is so true, if we all could do what we really LIKED (or Loved) to do, there would be a lot more happy people in this world. But not everyone can be as lucky or talented as PJ, or any other self-realized person.
@honoria her off-stage little girl voice is adorable. But when she sings songs like Rid of Me, she is fierce! But then she has that White Chalk album that is kind of shoegaze. Her range is so incredible. I LOVE YOU PJ
She's fab. Dead talented, and she's never done a bad album. Saw her live n concert the other night with John Parish and she was so grateful to the audience, at one point thanking us just for coming to see them. Thanks to you for an unforgettable performance P.J , here's to many more!!!
When you sing, usually if you do it right, you sound nothing like when you talk. unless you train yourself to intentionally speak in a singing voice (an example of that would be jason mraz).
One of the best interviews ive ever seen of hers! That interviewer seemed genuinely personally interested in her art. Thanks : ) oh & damn she looks beautifull here..
You mean the one with pink suit and her hair pulled back w/straight hair extension? Probably not. I've never seen any video of her in that setting w/ that particular clothing & hairstyle combination anywhere else. So I assume they probably shot some short video for that weeks concert, for the purpose of using it in this feature/interview. Just my best guess. I could be wrong. And it would be alright if you hope for that to be the case.
I love how she remains subtle (like when the interviewer asked her about her childhood) even when faced with personal questions. However she still manages to answer the question with honesty and insight!

@crankypete And all the tears Kim shed when losing test matches/ the australian captaincy
But seriously folks, PJ is fan-fookin-tastic - then and now. One can forget how accomplished and focussed she was at a younger age.

She has such a sweet, delicate speaking voice. It was nothing like how I expected it.
She's a complete genius either way.

why is it that when british people sing they sound like they have an american accent?...
artemis709 2 years ago
Why do Americans sing like hybrid Europeans?
marxman00 2 years ago 13
It's hard for me to hear someone's accent coming through; it depends on how they shape their vowels.
