  • Clams that are eaten, from Long Island to Florida, are scientifically classified as "Mercenaria Mercenaria" or are called by their popular names; Quohog: Little Neck, etc.. In contrast, cockles are a distinctly different shellfish which not eaten but are used for bait in fishing. What you display is a cockle. Cockles are not clams. I dig clams, I know the difference. Florida east coast.
