  • I broke my headstock too.

Everyone was telling me that the guitar was 100% ruined forever even if I fixed it.

    Thank god for this video.

I don't feel so bad about it now.

  • Explorer first - you're lucky Edge.

  • I love him.

  • Yep from The Who, it cud be Peter Buck from REM but he is talking bout earlier guitarists because he mentions Keith Richards just before

  • I think it's townsend from

The Who aye , although I know he admires Peter Buck as well but he his talking about earlier guitarists because before he mentions Keith Richards

  • which pete is he talking about at 5:22? townsend?

  • @stopmonkey47452 I'm pretty certain it's Pete Townshend.

  • I've seen him play alongside jimmy page and jack white who are both excellent guitarists but the best and most original part of that showcase is when edge plays, there are loads of people and some you mention who play in similar ways to others, nobody has ever sounded like "The Edge", I think I read somewhere I think it was vai or satriani, I'm not sure which one that his favourite guitarist was Edge!!!

  • I've got to add something else as well, Peter buck, kurt cobain, Noel gallagher to name but a few of my other favourite guitarists.

It's all about the song not about who stands out and that's what these guys bring/ brought.

I again can think of easily between them 20 or 30 songs that are relevant still

  • I'm sorry bud but I honestly cannot name apart from knopfler and Moore any of the others songs enough said eh, I can however name at least a dozen of U2 songs that have and still have a place in mainstream music now go back to ur 100 mile an hour playing

    Saddo

  • @bonolee07 Those artists have no necessity to belong to the mainstream music, just beacuse they have demonstrated their contribution to the music. It's pretty shameful to corroborate how they are even unknown for millions of people. Nevertheless, there´s no fair comparison between The Edge and the artists mentioned before in terms of accuracy, technique, skill, resources, precision, variety, quality, etc. I like a lot of U2´s songs, but I have to admit the Edge is a very limited artist

  • The edge is without doubt in the top 5 guitarists who have had a major effect on music in the last 30 years, he thinks about the whole song and not his ego as do most of the 5 minute solo players who I have no interest in, some of the songs are not that easy, try keeping the rhythm to "BAD" for the main riff with a delay and keep in time without it sounding wrong.

People are jealous of there success being the biggest band over the last 25 years I think !!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Interesting comments about what Edge said about guitar players who are either the gunslingers versus guitar players who are sidemen.

  • the explorer is a beautiful instrument and the edge is a great musician

  • 34 people forgot to turn on their hearing aids.

  • @nervdamaj

You clearly don't understand what The Edge wants to be as a guitar player. He doesn't want to be a Lead guitarist with shredding and stuff. For him, it's about the entire song.

And btw you don't know anything about his skills. He has bin Guitarist over 30 Years. In that time he could get better then any guitarist. And that he doesn't shred, doesn't mean he can't.

  • @justincgs err, yes I can read music, although not as well as I used to. I am a graded violinist (Royal College of Music) and I also play the piano and guitar. The Edge has a sound that has defined U2; a massive global band who could sell out any stadium. He creates music that millions love so by definition he is a great musician. The fact he doesn't shred like Yngwie Malmsteen or do lead breaks like Dave Gilmour is irrelevant. Also try not to be so rude - doesn't make you look good or clever.

  • I don't understand why people say he is overrated. He is the only guitarist in one of the biggest bands ever. It was his sound is that really made U2 stand out and to me he makes guitars sound as different as Hendrix did in his day. I think people are just jealous.

  • I was expecting a guitar hero prototype... you know, it has five chords and that's about it. lol

  • Simplicity is the direction of evolution

  • To state that the Edge is overrated because his parts lack complexity is no different than saying Thomas Edison is not a great inventor because the light bulb lacks complexity. The true question is, what impact does he have on society? We can clearly see that this creative musician has influenced countless other players. Their may be thousands of guitarist's who move more quickly up and down the neck but hardly anyone has the intuitive mind to create guitar parts like he does.

  • To the guy saying that the edge shouldnt be considered a great musician... Go and wash your mouth son, even deaf people know he is a one of a kind musician. FACT.

  • Obviously, he created an unique sound, no doubt about it. Anyhow, a huge difference between him and other top guitarrists around there, I think he is quite overrated musician.

  • @mgljimcmgl How can he be overrated? I don't think anyone has put Edge in direct comparison with any other guitarist. It's the sheer number of people liking the music and sounds he creates that make him a ranking guitarist. It would be a step forward if fellow musicians would stop measuring a great musician by his technical ability but instead concentrate on what is coming out of his amp.

Edge never competed in any other category than his own. That alone makes him a true artist in my book.

  • @cornelpunx Obviously nobody can put Edge in direct comparison with any other guitarist, just because he has no class to compete aganist the best. Playing an instrument requires technical ability, skill, commitment and other things. Edge plays his role in U2, all his sounds really fit in a band like that, but you should admit he shows a lack of skill and capability to play the instrument properly. Nevertheless, it doesn´t matter at all, they still sell millions of LP´s.

  • @mgljimcmgl I wish I was "overrated" like him...

  • Generally I can't stand the Edge and his ostentatious rig, but this interview actually made me respect him a little more. Especially what he was saying about "sideman" guitarists. He still has that terrible stage name though...

  • No that's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that his set up is way over the top and most of what's in there will barely ever be used, if at all.

The results in tone and any effects can be achieved using less....

  • If you want to get a Gibson tone that have that edgy sustain in a Strat, then set Strings` Tubes on a Strat with vintage tremolo bridge. This will let all those small cheap effects get bigger tones than ever if any of you want to have huge tone from average gear. ; )

  • Quit trying to screw up Malibu. Take your obnoxious house back to Ireland.

  • I think Edge would have bought the guitar in Piggies .Just off Grafton St

  • edge just amazing

  • The interviewer sounds like Adam Clayton U2 (bass)

  • He takes us to the edge every time

  • this is from it might get loud

  • @MrHudsongreen

    No it's not

  • I'm sorry guys, since I'm italian, I would know if The Edge said where he boughts that electric guitar. Please.

  • Hey may not be the best guitarist in the world, but holy crap, is he ever creative !!!!

  • 00:22 How much would this thing gonna go on auction, if ever.

  • the beautiful thing about music is the extremes. yes the edges style varies a bit from the 'typical traditional' style, but thats whats amazing. musicians need to push the limits of what their instrument can do. the edge has obviously made his contribution

  • hmm weird, I don't like U2, but I really like the Edge. I'd love to sit down and talk guitars with him.

  • Im suprised the edge hasnt got into leslie speakers hes got enough chorus pedals why not a leslie? its 10 times better!

  • Never try to sound like someone else, find your own sound! I can't stand playing with guitar players that want to be the Edge!!! its very boring!! when I buy and use my rig which is no more than 4-5 pedals into a valve amp, I pick what feels and sounds good to me. I would never go buy the same set-up as the famous player?? thats kind of odd unless your a tribute act

  • PLAY the fcking biatch ;D

  • he might not be the best guitarist but hes definatly the smartest guitarist

  • My dads dads friends son is married to the Edges daughter and The Edge gave him a guitar. He is the BEST

  • in 1979? Metallica weren't even formed then and apparently James Hatfield began using Explorers in 1984 ... by that time Edge's Explorerwas already beaten up and on 5 U2 albums.

This video only gives a brief glimpse into Edge's world. In other interviews he acknowledged, he was the first in IRELAND using an Explorer. I wouldn't judge this guy by just one interview.

He used to claim, he was actually after a Rickenbacker, not a Les Paul. I guess after 35 years these are mere little faux-pas.

  • Worlds best rythm guitarist :)

  • one of the most creative guitarist in the world!

  • what an artist

  • @Novacoma What are you nuts???...there is about a half dozen great songs off U2's last album "No Line On The Horizon" "Breathe" is an amazing song paticularly live...."Magnificent" is fucking magnificent.."Unkown Caller" and "Moment of Surrender" are two of the longest songs they have ever recorded and actually were considered two of the better songs they have recoreded by a number of critics..."Cedars of Lebanon" shows a bit of jazz influence in it...a first for U2...fez/Being Born is prog U2

  • He has that amount of effects because when he was creating his sound everything was huge. Just because in 2011 you can do similar things with 1 floor pedal doesnt mean the edge should change.

  • And of course i totally agree about when he talks of guitarists and types. And he gave props to Johnny MArr! Another great. If i could one day play somewhere between those two in terms of style (and do it well), that would just be more than i could ever ask for.

  • @howhurl No it wasn't

  • Can someone explain to me what he means when he says "it goes against" the chords?

So if the chord progression is A C G, does the 'nice' part go G C A?

  • @SirValeous The guitar part he plays in the verse is almost this kind of bitter sound that plays against the sweet sound of the main chord progression, which creates a bitter-sweet kind of feel. Dont know if that explanation helps but thats a little along the lines of what he means

  • @JimmyWhiteEdge Thanks. I get that. But I wanted a more theoretical explanation. What exactly does 'playing against the chords' mean in technical terms?

  • @SirValeous If you listened to what he played and to the actual song you hear he is playing slightly off. Thats because he isnt playing against the chords....so it's basically him playing his part (tabs) with no guitar chords backing him up

  • so much respect for edge, the care he has for his guitars

  • The edge i like this guy seems humbel for a great guitar player one of many reasons why u2 is fantastic

  • Thats quite a get-up

  • Totally agree with Edge about guitarist types, however, I'd qualify his comment about virtuoso guitarists in one way: there are those who make it sing and then there are those who are just technically proficient. Those who make it sing are interesting and worth the time.

  • Love the guitar....not a fan of the headstock

  • Cool video, the Edge rocks. His simplicity makes it beautiful

  • Hey everybody the edge is an awesome guitarist.

  • He sounds like he's always using the neck pickup.

  • Exactly, couple of amps, a F-Force, nova drive and a few other pedals would give you the same tonal variations and flexablity......Ilike the Edge, met hime once and like his playing. I'm just stating that his set up is over the top.

Ignition has his lace panties all in a twist over nothing.

  • @nextmove Hi, thanks for commenting here. I think the difference between what you're trying to achieve and what The Edge is doing, is that you/we are trying to re-create a tone someone has found. Edge on the other hand needs these to get inspired. Like a good song, it can take ages to write and record but once done, you hear it and think 'why didn't i come up with it, so simple.' ... same thing IMO.

  • @cornelpunx

That's a fair comment, sorry for the typo in my previous post, should obviously have said "G-Force.....anyhow, I've said enought on this. I like The Edge's playing and particularly his writing so please don't think I'm putting him down as such.

  • @cornelpunx

Yup , you know what you are talking about, great !

  • @cornelpunx

    edge is just a genias

  • @nextmove effects nazi

  • @JimmyWhiteEdge

Try not to be a jerk Jimmy. I'm not anything like that, just making a point that he's using a sledge hammer to crack open a walnut !

  • What you are really saying is: I can make a cheaper copy of that sound....

which means: Is sounds similer, a bit cheaper, but a good immitation - not original sounding, IMMITATION.....

well my friend, you are right, but you're not saying anything new under the sun here

  • @nextmove My eyes glanced over your comment and I saw "lace panties" "twist" "Ignition" "F-Force" "nextmove" "flexability" "over the top", sounds like party over here. :- /

  • Ignition, obviously you have some kind of man-crush on Mr Edge. Yes I am serious, just because the band are successful doesn't mean I'm wrong. Take a look at other players set up's, they are no where near as excessive...why....well you figure it out.

He can use what ever the hell he likes, I'm not saying he doesn't have that right, only that it's just a bit much is all. Get over it, I'm not running your boyfriend into the ground, it's only an observation.

  • lol True, but he's still using way too much in my opinion and I'd go so far as to bet that most of the time, 95% of what's in those racks never gets touched.

  • @ConorSloane118 I think I'm missing something...

  • All I am saying is that his set up iw way over elaborate for what he's doing. It's borderline obsessive compulsive.

The sounds and textures he's achieving could easily be achieved with a single G-Force, a channel switcher and a couple of amps.....yes he has tons of money and he has the right to use or buy what ever the hell he feels like, but this set up is waaay over the top. Gilmors and Johnsons are less elaborate and their tone is arguably better using less, it's cock measuring at it's best

  • @nextmove "Borderline obsessive compulsive" pretty much describes ANY dedicated musician (or indeed any kind of artist in any category, musical or otherwise) and that's what makes them so amazingly brilliant when they get it right, like Edge does.

  • @nextmove I bet he could get that sound with much less, and i bet he knows that. I think this is sort of a hobby for him! I would do it like this if i had the money!

  • @Mattykerley

I read your comments (that you removed !) about me knowing nothing about guitar. Well, I'm playing at BB Kings, Timesquare, NYC, this Friday night, where are you playing ?...bedroom ?

  • Comment removed

  • @Mattykerley

You keep deleting your posts Matty ??? FYI I have a rather eleborate set up but I'll not bore ya, more than one pedal buddy ! Enjoy your little Church show, wondered why you were so uptight.....so many christians, not enough lions !

  • Comment removed

  • @Mattykerley

Lol, I love the smell of denial first thing in the morning :)

  • did he just mention Johnny Marr?! Awesome!!!!!!!

  • @ConorSloane118 the bit about the Les Paul? I think you'll find he made a mistake but went with it. He actually wanted a Rickenbacker as he idolised Paul Weller in The Jam at the time, at least that's what he had been saying in interviews over the years. I guess you're allowed to mix little things up after 30+ years.

Edge is a little bit of a poser though - nothing wrong with that though. He's a rock n roll star for heaven's sake. Give the guy a break :)

  • @nextmove he's making loads of money, and people love what is coming through his amp's speakers - you possibly don't. so, i take he's doing something right :) ... even if he could scale down, he loves what he's doing and he can afford to lug all this around. I would if I could, I know that for sure ;)

  • @cornelpunx

Can the smiles and the winks, they make you look like an unbelievable tosser.

  • @nextmove If Im paying 80 odd euro I want the guitarist to not screw up which pedal combination he used to get the sound he did in the recording. Multiple processors through a bradshaw system like that mean it's going to be exactly the sound no matter what order in the chain the pedals were and how many were on to achieve the sound

  • @nextmove This is priceless. Some indiscriminate idiot named "nextmove" is trying to put down the Edge from U2, on YouTube. The biggest band on the planet, currently on the biggest tour in history. Maybe aim a little lower, like Maroon 5, or something. The worst part is that you're serious.

  • @nextmove He do it because he can

  • Wow.....he and I love the same kind of guitarists.

  • "Where science meets art.... The Edge!!!" - Bono

  • Love the Edge and his tones and creative approach. Advice from one of the premier guitarists from one the longest lasting pop or rock groups? YES PLEASE!!!!

  • boy does this guy ever need an axe fx!

  • @snapascrew that would be weird ... the axe fx tech people taking notes from edge's rig and sound, so why would he go with something that follows his archaic rig? I think you'll find that this monster rig is part of the creative process, where he can easily replace effects and move things around while something like the Axe FX is more for someone trying to REcreate an existing tone. Edge is using scaled down rigs for smaller shows though. But for what it is, the Axe FX is pretty stunning.

  • @snapascrew Fractal audio people recently got together with edge for some sort of meeting.

  • Well he needs to broaden his horizons if he thinks guys like EVH and hendrix can't do it all. "and they're not that interesting in the end" is really a narrow minded statement and I'm surprised he said that, unless he's referring to shredders like Gilbert, Malmsteen and Batio.

  • @xPaula116 soundproofing material?

  • The truth about his guitar play is that he plays it like a piano at times. Think about the guitar solo in New Year's Day. He going up and down the fret rather than across the strings.

  • @xPaula116 if I remember correct it's a.o. Einstein's theory of relativity.

  • @cornelpunx General or Special? ;)

  • theres a time for solos and theres a time for staying in the backlines. the edge is hugely mistaken if he thinks that only the way that he sees the subject is right. other than that this is a great clip.

  • @Ozznize well, while i agree with the essence you're trying to say, it should be said that Edge never claimed what you're trying to put in his mouth. He just talked about himself and what he prefers. He never said his approach is the correct one, let alone the one to follow.

  • What a nice guy. He deserves all the success he has had. A down to earth chap. Not at all cheeky. Here's for for you mate !!!

  • The edge is just too cool :D

  • 2:45 what song is that?

  • @deadman316 Beautiful day.

  • Best Guitar player ever !

  • I had no idea that "Edge" was such a humble nice bloke, he can call in for a cup of tea at my house any time he likes.

  • James Hetfield OWNS the Explorer

  • @Doomzdayxx I love James Hetfield, love his guitar playing, and have been listening to Metallica since 1984, but sorry...he does NOT own the Explorer.

  • @ricotinez He really does. Hard to argue it. Google something like "explorer guitarist" "rock guitar explorer" , just something generic like that, you will automatically see Hetfield pics scattered throughout. It's just a fact. He is to the Explorer what Dimebag is to the Dean ML. Not trying to rub it in, just sayin man.

  • @Doomzdayxx Just for the sake of argument, I Google'd "Gibson Explorer," since the Explorer IS a Gibson. I'm seeing a lot of pictures of The Edge and so far, none of James. I love James Hetfield and he's one of my biggest influences since 1984, but any popular Gibson model guitar is too big for just one player to "own." Dimebag isn't even on my radar and neither are Dean ML's.

  • @ricotinez Oh, no reason to apologize to me, I know I was right in the first place though. Not sure which google you checked lol. It's ok man, Hetfield might be the best known for Explorer shaped guitars but Edge is right behind him. just sayin'.

  • @Doomzdayxx that's James Hetfield's Explorer? cool of him to let Mr Edge borrow it

  • @ufowisconsin Haha he wishes

  • efecto tony hawk..........se ve sencillo en el video, conceguirlo toma una vida entera

  • what? how could anyone not love an explorer? a. sounds awesome b. looks fucking awesome

  • Beautiful actually really He has beautiful imagination

  • theres no just 2 types of guitars the other is the guitarist that doesn't play to show of but plays to the feel of the music and when they solo its just extents the feeling of the song

  • @EGPK11 I think he means that at the time he bought the Explorer it wasn't a commonly-seen guitar. Edge bought the Explorer in 1976 or 1977, several years before Metallica was formed in 1981.

  • Comment removed

  • These comments are funny. Who needs to know if Edge is better/worse than anyone else? He comes up with guitar parts and sounds to create songs. Why should he always have to face judgment about his credentials? Not everyone has to like U2, but leave alone those who do. For me, no other guitarist has ever moved me inside quite like The Edge.

  • "we have to be able to go back...if the song demands it." truer words have never been spoken. great guitarist AND a great musician

  • Sorry for my English but I just wonder how he had his guitar broken! Any one could tell ? Thx .

  • @MyAroi I think to have read elsewhere a scuffle between a fan and a bouncer broke out at the Radio City Hall gig and Edge tried to intervene. He must have put his guitar aside or something when it must have hit the floor. You can download the gig where it apparently happened. It's a wild affair and the band have to stop the show several times to ask the crowd to move back, etc w w w .u2start.c o m /shows/672/

  • i swear that beanie looks so bad ass on him, even on stage now-a-days haha, love this guy.

  • The Edge is my Guitar Hero!

  • Edge is a great musician but not a great guitarist. Good thing he knows how to bring out more of his qualities. A good principle of any musician

  • @crazymarvel I believe that you think that because he is putting himself behind the song and behind the singer. As a trumpet player I share the same philosophy as he has. I am part of the whole. It is hard to do a glamorous solo if the song is focused around the voice of the singer. You stay in the back and them people say you are a great musician but not a great instrumentalist..

  • The Edge laughing........thats a first..........thought he was Irish..........sounds more english to me

  • Comment removed

  • Wonderful guitar! Love the colours.

  • The man is a legend. One of the most innovative players ever.

  • been a metal fan, i have to agree with the edge about the gun slinger guitarists, the genre is swamped with people who think that setting the fretboard on fire makes them a great guitarist, thats why i respect the edge, his pursuit of that tone/sound, is what helps make u2 a unique band. however, there is one virtuoso i will stand by, and that is joe satriani, sure, he an shred with the best of em,but unlike alot of shredders, he know when to hold back , he lets the melody drive the song

  • These top guys practically take a Guitar and Amp shop around with them !! LOL

  • Does anybody know if the video of the same interview where he plays "Where the streets have no name" is still online?

  • Damn thats a lot of pedals, amps, rack units.

  • Playing fast takes practice. Making music takes talent. The Edge has talent.

  • It’s funny he would mention that about going back. I use to listen to U2 from the beginning. They slowly got away from what I thought was good music. (The Fly was about the last song I liked). When I heard “Beautiful Day” I thought to myself, “hey, they are going back to the roots again” and I liked that song. Unfortunately they didn’t stick with it. But I guess it’s all about finding new fans and changing with the times.

  • @Blaschbuck

no, bono writes all the songs, the edge is creating music for the songs.

  • @matezguy So no, Bono does NOT write all the songs. He writes the lyrics, and David writes the music. Together, they create a song.

  • @guitarrhythymfool Not always. Plenty of lyrics have been co-written by Edge and Bono, some music has been composed exclusively by Bono, some lyrics&music are by the whole U2, etc. But one could say that, basically, Bono writes all lyrics and U2 as a whole compose all music.

  • @u2santos Basically. I was just responding to what the other person said, saying 'Bono writes all the songs and the Edge writes the music for the songs,' which to me is just a stupid remark. If Bono wrote the whole song, then no, David DIDN'T write the music for it.

But I know what you're saying.

  • the king of sound effect

  • sinple . anyone who wants to call the edge a crap guitarist should go play guitar better and prove it ....edge is an amazing person musically and personality . he plays guitar sings writes songs plays piano ..... he has so much talent and no-one ever called him the best guitarist ever so u2 haters just leave it out and listen to your own musical tastes.

  • WAT?! :P

  • His guitar is better then porn

  • You haters know he's not just a guitar player, right?

    He sings.

    He plays.

HE WRITES ALL THE F***ING SONGS

  • @Blashbuck Just a DECENT guitar player I think....especially WITHOUT all his effects.....but quite a good songwriter Simply my opinion!!!

  • @Blashbuck Just a DECENT player,especially WITHOUT all his effects....but quite a good songwriter.

    Simply my opinion though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @yam500 ...Is it ? ok yam, get back to sucking media and corporate flute.

  • @lavendistesapo

I'm not sure what you're thinking I said about classical music? I didn't disparage classical music at all. My comment was about so-called 'guitar heroes'. Who think that 'difficult' equals 'good music'.

But as for the difference between classical and modern... most pop music today is essentially folk music. Even in the classical era, folk music was the way you describe contemporary!

  • when i clicked on this vid i though "OH SHIT THE EDGE IS GOING TO HAVE A FUCKING TSUNAMI WORTH OF PEDALS"

  • Is it from in the story off the guitar ?

  • Beautiful bells...beautiful sounds...

  • Fuck all these modern tone deaf twats...

  • @HitchHikersBlues I'd hardly call a guitarist who's been around since the mid-70's tone deaf or modern and I don't understand where you think anyone who listens to it appreciates it. Music is music and you should just let it be just that.

  • Edge doesn't get enough cred for his guitar ship ??

This guy has created some of the most beautiful sounds i've ever heard in music...

  • Watch U2 in Melbourne for the first time last week... fuckin' awesome! :D

  • @petestrat07 my best mate went he said it was mad

  • @petestrat07 ...it is awesome.

  • is this from the movie "It might get loud"? Or maybe a bonus feature thing?

Btw... I highly suggest it for any guitarist, I loved it.

  • @valax300 It's the unedited interview of a BBC interview about the evolution of the guitar.
