  • hehhe making project in the room..

  • If I don't get accepted into Cal Art, SFAI or CCA , which are all 35,000 a year which is like 60,000 in two years (not cool) this is my back up school. The others are venomous money suckers that need to abolished no matter what accreditation. Reform College Now! I'm going here, the only art school which won't leave me in an alley, broke. Nice walls , this place looks nice.

  • I am interested in coming to AAU on the Fall of 2013, I am doing Culinary Arts :)

  • If I don't get accepted into Calarts I'm going to this school

  • I'm a senior in high school right now planning to come here in the Fall of 2012. I want to hear from a student that actually attends (not their website) about the kinds of people that go to this school, how good their interior design program is, the workload, and just their overall experience of going to AAU? Thanks :)

  • Is it possible, to 'afford' this school, with your own means?? Like Scholarships, FAFSA (last resort - loans) and a full-time job...

  • i did the summer program!! I WAS ON THE 6th floor! 606 at the HOWARD BRODIE!! =) I MISS IT!!

  • All white walls...oh my gosh O.O. I might attend this place in fall 2012 also and I see the dorms are okay to live in lol. Advertising is something I'm looking into and I've heard they've got a good program in the Bay Area.

  • Hello! We almost have the same username! This school reached out to me a few weeks and let me say that they did a pretty good job in advertising themselves. In other websites I have read about reviews for this school. I might be attending in Fall 2012 for their architecture program and I will like to get info about the school from a current student in any area or even better architecture area. Thank you for your time! Blessings!

  • @SpatterPaint101

I would love to give you some info on the architecture program but I don't have friends who are in that major so I can't tell you much. Let's hope an architecture major sees this and can help you. Like any major, there is a lot of hard work and dedication required outside of classes to succeed. With this school, it all depends on you and your work ethic. If you work hard and dedicate lots of time to sharpen your skills and win over competition, you'll succeed.

  • Ah thank you so much for your answer. I am more confident now. It's my first time in san francisco this fall too! I am anxious to meet San fran!

  • Hey, I am dorming this fall in this residence. I am wondering how are the bathroom, since I got emailed there is no bathroom. Lol.

  • @InoaxClara21

Each floor has one large communal bathroom. Each bathroom has about four stalls (like a public restroom) and about four showers, large mirrors, etc. There is also one private bathroom with one toilet, per floor (except the 2nd floor). The individual rooms in Howard Brodie do not have their own bathrooms, all the people share the communal bathroom on their floor. It's not as bad as it sounds, if you are worried. They are cleaned daily, and people are respectful.

  • >__< I really want to go to AAU, but it's just too expensive for me and all. D: I'm starting my senior year of high school this end of august and I just don't know if I should go through with going to san fran. I plan to major in illustration

  • @JigokuLA I'm also majoring in illustration and I'm freaking out about how I will pay for it and I'm graduating in May!

  • oh okay. thank you. there is one per person right?

  • @jordanbozin3

    Yes, everyone gets their own.

  • how are the closets?????

  • @jordanbozin3

No closets, we get wooden armoires. They're decent but you might want to take extra storage if you have a lot of clothes.

  • Im going to be in this dorm too.. i hope its nice i didnt get to tour it :(

2nd floor. only stairs? or elevators.?

  • @MaliaAngel5

I lived on the second floor last semester. It is the best floor, it has brand new bathrooms and its own little "common area" with a sofa and tables in the hallway. There are both stairs and elevators. You won't need an elevator to get to the second floor, but it is there if you need it! :)

  • I am going to AAU in the fall and living in this dorm. Do all of you like it??

  • Wow, I miss this place. Is this Howard Brodie?

  • @richtotheelle

    Yes it is.

  • @xSplatterPaintx i'm applying for a masters degree (mfa).. is everyone accepted?

  • @satu0

Hmmm. I'm not sure about masters degrees. You're going to have to ask admissions.

  • @xSplatterPaintx thank you very much for your help :)

  • i wanna go here but i know for a fact that my parents wont let me leave chicago to go to san fran

  • @BIGredsArtWORLD19 im getting an online degree for my bfa and its been pretty good so far. The classes are very flexible and easy to work with as well as interaction with fellow students and teachers but its not the same as being in the actual school so any questions you may have for your instructor may take up to a day for a response. I like it because i work and the classes do not interfere with my schedule at all and you get to log in whenever its best for you. Hope that helped.

  • I'm doing my classes online right now and it sucks. Being on the computer all day is frustrating. I want to actually go to this school but how much is it per year for the dorms?

Is it cheaper when you have roomates?

  • @Jierado If it's like other universities it should be cheaper if you're splitting it with someone. Check the website for dorm costs. My dad actually applied me to this school. ( I live in Texas currently ) And they gave me a call today. I'd love to fly out to California. The city of SF looks extremely beautiful. Classes look amazing as well. And they have lots of financial aid you can apply for. Definitely check them out.

  • @Jierado It's $3,600 per semester (if you choose the cheapest option - rooming w/ 3 other people and a public bathroom) +$75 cleaning fee/semester and a $500 deposit (which goes toward the $3,600). I'm doing dorms for the first year because I don't know anyone down there and it'll help me settle in. Getting a roommate is probably cheaper if you know someone.

  • i was wondering about applying here. How heavy do you have to rely on your drawing skills for a major like game design or advertising?

  • @DaylorTuddy

If you are a Game Design major, you'll have to take Animation courses, which means you'll most likely have to take drawing courses such as Analysis of Form and Figure Drawing. There's a guy in my Figure Drawing class who is a Game Design major, so there's my resource. Advertising, to my knowledge, doesn't ask for as much drawing skill...my roommate was Advertising and I never saw her draw. I'd investigate further though, I'm really not sure.

  • How was your experience and was the school worth it?

  • @CABdosdos

So far it has been a very positive experience and I'm very impressed with the classes and resources. You get what you give here; if you are passionate about art and have a strong work ethic, you will do well and have a great experience. Classes give a lot of work and demand lots of dedication. You get in-depth looks into your industry and how to get a job in it, and you learn the history of your industry too. I've developed a lot as an artist here. For me, it's worth it.

  • I plan on goin there this fall; :D

  • Which is the best dorm for upcoming freshmens?

  • @AbstractComfortKX

For Freshmen, there is an all-girl dorm and an all-boy dorm, the I (international) House, and the Commodore (which is co-ed). This video was filmed inside the all-girl dorm, Howard Brodie. It's decent, but it seems to be the oldest building, so its a bit ugly. The Commodore seems to be the nicest of the Freshmen dorms. The rooms have their own bathrooms too, instead of shared communal bathrooms like Howard Brodie. I have not heard too many good things about the I House.

  • @xSplatterPaintx I did the pre-college program this past summer and stayed at Howard Brodie, luckily for me and my roommates, we got a pretty big room like you guys haha. I was thinking the Commodore as well. Thanks!

  • @xSplatterPaintx

Thanks for the info. I'm afraid I'm not doing animation. I'm looking more at drawing/painting.

    Good luck with animation.

  • So, I'm a senior in high school and I'm applying to colleges. I thought about AAU, but I'm just not so sure anymore.

Whats the best art school in San Francisco? Academy of Art, California College of the Arts, SFAI, or AI?

  • @RosemaryPoppins

I've only been at Academy of Art and I can only answer for the Animation department because that's my major. What I can say is that the Animation dept. is pretty outstanding; instructors are all professionals within their industry (people from Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, ILM, etc.), the resources provided to students are excellent (many PC and Mac labs with all the software you will ever need, from Photoshop to After Effects to Maya).

  • @xSplatterPaintx is this college good for learning graphic design?

  • @chillywinter16

I don't know any graphic design students, so I don't know.

  • @xSplatterPaintx i'm interested in animation. i'm planning to get started with my application process :) i've a query.. i'm determined to work hard and do well but is it very hard to get in?? i mean, is the acceptance rate per class very low?

  • @satu0 You're automatically accepted if you graduated from high school. They have a high drop-out rate because many people will see this as an easy option (if one day they just decide they're going to be an artist and find out it's harder than it looks). So in other words, it's super simple to get in.

  • What Hall is this?

  • anyone looking to save some money DONT use the AAU dorms they're waaay overpriced, relatively small (most of them anyway), and have annoying rules. craigslisting an apt is a cheaper route

  • @Ninjerina

The "annoying rules" are there for our safety and well being. I personally enjoy that.

  • @xSplatterPaintx the dorms are cheaper than apartments (unless you live in the tenderloin or mission which are shit holes) and the rules are dumb... but easy to cheat depending on the dorm... mine was easy cuzz the RAs are lazy

  • @xSplatterPaintx

Okay well have fun with your excessive rules and paying an extra $1000 dollars a month in rent. I understand if you stay on campus at first to make friends or you dont know the city but after that its just wasting cash.

  • @xSplatterPaintx yeah the school doesnt even want to look at a portfolio when you enter (although what they DONT make glaringly obvious is that if you dont try to get a class waived the first semester they wont ever wait it. Lame, yes). The school has a first year dropout rate ridiculously high. They like conning rich kids whove dont know how to draw that they can go from never practicing art in their life to being a pro artist. It HAS actually happened but not without a ridiculous work ethic.

  • @Ninjerina work ethic is required to make it anywhere in this world... life doesn't reward you for being lazy.

Talent is nothing if you don't get off your ass and get your projects done. The greatest minds in history wouldn't have made anything with themselves if they didn't get off their ass and accomplish something.

AAU I wouldn't exactly say is conning cuzz of the high drop out rate. Everyone I know that dropped out of there was lazy and didn't know what they wanted. Their own damn fault.

  • @dardrex777 They make tons of money by letting anyone come in and then making the initial classes very difficult so that if you have zero experience, it would be VERY hard to pass even w/ hard work. They have fees tacked on to several of the classes($400 lab fee if you take a computer-oriented class, regardless of whether or not you actually use the lab), and then just about 0 in the way of any type of financial aid or scholarships (except they give SPORTS scholarships at an art school)...

  • @Ninjerina If you are coming in to an industry style school with zero experience and can't handle the difficulty... then you aren't cut out for the industry and should find another occupation

I started my stunt production team 3 years before I came to AAU... I've been at AAU for a year and I keep pressing on because I get off my ass and get shit done so that I can end up in the industry ASAP

My edit class doesn't have that high of a course fee. And I have grants+ loans.

  • @Ninjerina if you think the industry is gonna cut you any slack then you are living in a fantasy... AAU is hard... industry is harder... if anything they get you prepared

  • Im going there this summer for mostly TV and Motion Pictures and Fashion, im kinda nervous tho..any info on the classes or a two person room in the Brodie dorm? itd mean alot. ^^

  • oh man that looks like my first dorm room. i know thats 655 Sutter was just curious what room cause mine was at the end of the hall on the right side on the 4th or 5th floor i was a floor below the very top floor cant remember how many floors it had.. i stayed there in 2000.

  • @schristy999

I don't remember the room number, but this was at the very end of the hall on the third floor.

  • do not go here! its a scam!! please be advised . read peoples reviews it will change your mind. all they want is your money the staff and teachers are very poor in helping you in your education. i went for a semester and left because i found out how it works behind the scenes.

  • @CiyderX I'm on my second year there... The teachers I worked with had amazing resumes such as a teacher who edited BATTLE BOTS, or the producer of FLIGHT PLAN, hell even the person who runs the MPT department was in Silence of the Lambs... I wouldn't call that poor staff... most film schools don't even have working professionals so that says a lot for AAU

  • @dardrex777

I agree about the very qualified staff. My animation professor worked for Walt Disney animation studios! He animated in Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan, and many others. Everyone's gotta agree that's pretty awesome.

  • @xSplatterPaintx another good point.

The staff are all working professionals... the VFX professor did the light-saber battle of yoda in Star Wars Episode 2

  • I've read so many negative reviews on this school, but I really like it. But I don't want to get ripped ....any advice ? ...current alumnis?

  • damn how expensive is it? i really wanna go but im kinda having an economic problem a bad one 0_0 but i qualify for alot of financial aid. im going for film as well

  • I'm planning on attending this school next fall. I was wondering if they provide private dorms (without roommates)? o.o

  • I'm a Junior in high school, thinking about coming to school here for film. What's this place like? Is it easy to get loans, aid ect?

  • This is a great place to study art. I took TV and Motion Pictures over the summer; the film sets and supplies, editing programs, and instructors are all fantastic, and filming while living in San Francisco is an amazing experience. Academy of Art University has it's own shuttle bus system to take you to all its campuses around the city, it's own galleries, shows, and more. It is a private school and therefore quite expensive. Most get aid from FAFSA. The school offers campus tours for info.

  • Ok thanks for the help. This school seems like a perfect fit for me, only I live in New England, so travel will be hard along with out of state fees

  • @Hockeygirl4 I go to Academy of Art for film. The classes you get what you put into them. The work load is hectic but it's good preparation for the industry.

  • what college is this?

  • The title should have told you.

  • shows how fast i go rofl

  • Which dorm is this?

  • Howard Brodie on Sutter St.
