I did the same exact thing. I got about 12 strands for 75% off at walmart, cut the LED's off, and soldered them onto a circuit board. I put that assembly in a nice wood enclosure with a glass front, and mounted them throughout my house. They run on 12 volts from my solar system and they are my only source of light.
Oh, and it was cheap! each LED ended up costing me about $.05, and I'll sell all of the copper in the wires at the scrap yard. They usually give me about $3.00 per lb of copper.
