One very inportant question. I too have a prostetic eye and i was wondering if you get eye boogers, cause i get alot and i clean it and still keep getting then it gets to the point where i dont even wanna wear my prostetic eye anymore any suggestions?
Hey dude just watched your video looks good, regarding you comment about the shelf life of 3-7 years this can vary vastly I have had mine for 21 years now.
2nd my son he's 2 yrs and 9 months will be getting his removed (enucleation ) within the next few days due to cancer. He will have just his left eye to work with.
Questions ; how hard was it to get used to it?
Did it itch all the time? Is there anything you recommended for us to do to make him not rip it out every 10 seconds ?
@down4thaSS Wow. That's an intense situation. It's difficult to get used to, but mostly from a mental standpoint. The ichiness and 'mild' discomfort is the only physical difficulty i think. If I knew I was going to lose an eye, I'd choose earlier in life rather than mid life. A child can develop depth perception much better than a person who loses an eye later in life.
Your son will be stronger because of it, like I am. Get him in good habits, and he'll leave his eye alone.
You mentioned itching. You mean normal itches, or is it some sort of reaction to the prosthetic eye, like an allergic reaction? Do you at all get used to wearing it, so that you really dont think about it? And how does it affect your everyday life, can you drive? Do you accidently knock over things cause the lack of depth perspective? Did the golfball only damage the eye, or did the socket also break?
I'm sorry you lost your eye. That had to be a hell of a shock.
@BlueZipher Just normal itchiness - no allergies or anything. I haven't been able to get used to wearing it, I think about it most hours of every day still. I can still drive fine, and my road vision is actually pretty good still. But I do knock stuff over a lot - not just because of depth perception, but a lot of things on my left side I just don't see.
@supersnake1599 yeah it turns a little bit. I can't tell in a mirror (obviously), because when I pan around, I can't focus on my prosthetic. @arul3151990mon I imagine it's like 5 or 6/10 on the movement scale. I WISH it was better.
@molly122ful My eye was made in Victoria, BC, Canada. My ocularist (the woman who 'builds' eyes), painted it by hand, and customized it by taking a mold of my eye socket. She tried a few times to get the color right - she didn't take a picture or anything... and it looked and felt good with her third attempt.
did it really hurt at the time it happened to you with the golf ball? You look just fine with it on, can you buy some drops to ease the itchiness? My right eye was injured 3 years ago and seems to be getting worse and I may have to have it removed eventually so I am a bit curious. Please keep us informed on how you are doing. Thanks for making the video.
Hey Dude I have the same problem with my right eye.. But I am wearing colored contact lens cause my pupil was been hit badly and it is completely white in color now however wearing that lens is not just enough as the my eyeball has shrunk with great extent and it does look lil ugly.. So I was thinking about the prosthetic eye however I am worried about the movement of the Fake Eye.. Compare to the original eye how much would you rate the movement of your prosthetic eye between the scale 1-10?
This video was so helpful. I'm glad you explained a little about it.
I am currently writing and illustrating a graphic novel where a character has a prosthetic eye, and I want to make sure I got the details right, even though it rarely comes up in the story (Because she is always wearing it). I prefer first person research, however, I know tons of people with other prosthetic body parts, but no one with an eye.
@AJTwister97 Yeah I definitely feel inside my socket. Around the edges of the socket feel pretty normal, just like when I rub my good eye. Inside though is pretty sensitive to touch, and can be pretty painful if I take my eye out wrong, or put it back in with too much force. The same sensitive pain associated with getting hit in the nuts.
Looks like you could have a better-fitting prosthesis. Return to your ocularist, as your socket may have changed shape since the eye was made. Ideally, it should stop itching, and, as the fit "settles," it will stop exuding-- and may no longer require weekly cleaning.
@xsoldierx1x I was camping with friends and I was floating on the lake while a friend was hitting golf balls into the water. He sliced one and I didn't see it coming. Missed every bone and struck my eye straight on.
@DressageQueen221 When I remove my prosthetic eye, my lid droops pretty low. It still blinks, but honestly I don't really think about blinking - I did it unconsciously for 26 years.
@Warrenmcj I've had a dog "punch" me directly in the eyeball, no contact with the eye socket or any bones. I felt the pain in the back of my brain so I feel for part of your experience very much. This message isn't about me though. I wanted to say your prosthetic eye looks quite natural with your normal eye colour. I couldn't even tell which it was until you made it obvious. I guess I just wanted you to know that because it's the first time I've seen such a fine ocular prosthesis.
I couldn't tell which one the fake one was until you took it out.
