I work on HH-60G Pave Hawks and we once had to make an emergency landing due to hydraulic fluid loss at the tail. A friend of mine that is a Black Hawk pilot in the Army has lost tail rotor gearbox cowlings before. There are a lot of fasteners to hold the cowling on, but they can still pop off if the receptacles for the fasteners are worn out or someone didn't perform a good preflight inspection.
They likely opened the cowling to inpect. Im presuming that they had a tail rotor gearbox chip detector light come on. That can be very very bad and would more than justify a "land right now". Its basically a sensor that's circuit is completed by a piece or "chip" of metal. So if the gears start to fail and break apart the sensor will pick that up, which turns on the light on the caution panel and voila! Safe landing in a field awaiting a new gear box vrs. a helicopter crash :)
You would think that the farmer would at least offer the crew a cold beer or some left over corn on the cob while they wait. After all, they do risk their lives to save strangers.
@jpm1084 Looks like the crew had drinks in their hands , The farmer probably hooked them up. But I bet even if he had invited them in to get out of the sun they are probably ordered to stay with the chopper.
F-ing news people. Picture of sky, field, helicopter. BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!

why the tail rotor tilt in angle like that ?
jvn1111 8 months ago
@jvn1111 The tail rotor is Canted 20 degrees to provide lift (2.5% of total lift during hover).
Mockeraina 8 months ago
@jvn1111 Yep, the tail on the 60 is heavy, so they tilt the rotor over to provide lift, help it hover without over torquing the trans.

I think Osama Bin Lama had something to do wih the tail rotor's gear box going afoul.
