a beautiful performance of a truly memorable song / like "MY GIRL" / " EVERYTHINGS COMING UP LOVE " / " WALK AWAY FROM LOVE " / " I WISH IT WOULD RAIN " is David Ruffin's song!
Dennis voice was great for the transition that the Temptations were going through and the change over was perfect for the 70's and the new sound. He and David both had their own sound and styles and both were great lead singers
Maybe im biased but I think the best years of the Temps when they had David Ruffin, that man had a strong but yet smooth preacher voice! Im only 26 but that music is timeless, I compared a live performance to when they recorded in the studio and it sound just alike, pure raw talent!

So welcome to the fold and enjoy a legacy of amazing performances .
@artiium21 No doubt the originals are the best. But David's a shell here. You can hear the voice but it was so strong he was so smooth. I'm 53 and he's even a little before me, but you look at the early videos, man he could move and sing.
David, Eddie & Dennis what a great triumphant. I defy anybody to tell me that Eddie Cain of the 5 Heartbeats was not David Ruffin. The Dells my butt. I love that movie though.
What do you mean the Dennis don't belong. You are crazy. Dennis wasn't one of the classic Temptations, but it was with Dennis singing lead that they won their first Grammy. You have to have been a part of a group 25 years after your first record to be inducted in the hall of fame, but because of his significance and major contribution to the Temptations, Dennis was the only one inducted in the hall of fame with the classic Temptations. And that says it all!

i agree with Willie Scott.. Otis should have helped his comrade he knew Griffin was in trouble.. (drugs) booze women .. there were egos' and you can;t see whats in the heart of a man. You can see his mind but the heart is treacherous and evil, and we don;t often let people see that deep into our souls. As the good book says the heart is treacherous and only god knows whats in it not man..
Simply put: The Voices. These three men comprised the "Sound" of the Temptations and it's a treat to see all three on stage together. Dennis Edwards bellowed out as many hits as David Ruffin and there isn't much difference in the greatness of their individual sounds. But if I had to pick the best between the two, I must select Ruffin. Go back and listen to the great tracks of both men. Ruffin's sound exudes a natural passion and sadness that is peerless. He just communicates so much more.
You better believe David, Eddie, Melvin, and Paul and even Otis as a good harmonizer. They were truly the voices. If Otis was thinking back then he would have insisted David get help for his drug problem.

@TheBigBarros Being the JERK that you are, you mean to tell me that David is the only one that has been on drugs, It's not about the drugs it's about his music that he left us, and the impact that he had on the music industry. If you dislike him and you must, then stop listening to his music . The man has left us something that will never ever be duplicated, you should live so long.
June 1, 2010 will mark the 19th year of the death of David Ruffin. Never before or never again will the world see talent on his level. The hand of God reached out
and touched him with that glorious voice that is filled with his soul.....he truly gave
everything in his being to the deliverance of his song. My daily prayer is that he is
at peace with God in Soul Heaven. May generations to come love and cherish the music treasures of "The Great David Ruffin".

@U4Know2 I've always loved Ruffin's voice and I really miss hearing his type of music and his great voice, but...c'mon.......what does his voice have to do with an invisible man in the sky?? I just wish people would stop the religious bullshit and simply say "Yep!! That guy can sing" or..."Yep...that guy can hit a baseball"......as I said, I just don't understand the religious angle......
This is some absolute/incredible footage!! Anyone know the year it was taped?? Also looking for 85 Live Aid performance (Ruffin/Kendricks)....Thank You for posting/sharing!!
@canrockfan I totally understand what you are saying, I recently heard Sinbad doing his act on TV, and he was talking to a kid of 17, introducing him to something that he could tell his kids about someday, it's called music, and showed him what instruments were, I would have laughed if it wasn't so sad....Lady L.
otis picked the best guys out thee i still cnt believe their gone theyy will be missed and remembered forever in the stiches in time u cant kill the greats
this is one of the things that i like about david ruffin but why does he always do that thing with his hands in most songs. He looks likes something flying into his face
i love david..he was a hot mess but had a magical voice men would pay for its a couple sistas that can still blow but men with this voice..i dont think so.
@MrYoungro2 I'm glad you asked!!! To crack, vocally speaking, is to hit a note off key from the one you intended to hit. Makes the very sound heard in this segment. You can also hit the note but not maintain it and get an "air" sound. Try it, Mr. Youngro2!! You too can "crack". Think of an outrageously high note that you're sure you can't hit and go for it. You may succeed or you may "crack". Either way let me know how that turns out.
Of course nothing can recapture the magic of when The Classic Five were together, but David, Eddie and Dennis stiil sounded pretty good. And David was such an big figure from the earlier Temptations until anytime that he performed, his presence alone was captivating. It still bothers me when I think about how the greatest lineup ever, The Classic Five, one by one (except for Otis), fell apart from the group and met early deaths due to personal issues or illness... The greats gone too soon!
i think they sounded better in the sixties and seventies. in the eighties and nineties they sound like a shell of their former selves. They still were able to sing, kinda like Whitney Houston now. And the reason they couldn't put together solid careers after the temptation is no doubt lack of discipline and we all know addiction is the main factor in that.
That is because it heart was really into it, but if you listen to his last interview in the UK he said he felt close to God and to use your talents to the best of their ability, rumor is he took no drugs on this tour
Aftrward he did. he binged (used a shitload of drugs because he hadnt had any for the longest time) a typical addicts behavior and sadly he died of an overdoes
I met this David in 1980 last time I saw him was 1990,do you know where he was that week was he looking for someone ?. Some reports say he was already DOA others say he died about an hour later. I am an ex drug addict I used from 11 to 22 and have been clean for almost 30 years. I don't think any less of David because he had a drug addict than someone who doesn;t as I believe addiction is part of human nature: sex, alcohol, ciggarettes, caffeine, sugar, tv whatever it is.
yeah your right. its not the drugs that make people talk badly about him its the attitude that he broughtto the group. he was an amazing performer tough.
TO ME DAVID GOT BETTER WITH AGE - HE SANG A WHOLE LOT BETTER IN THE 80'S AND 90'S THAN HE DID IN THE 60'S. This performance just take my breath away. I love Sweet Eddie.
im 23 but loveeeeee the temptations love melvin eddie and otis and paul love david to but he thought he was better then the rest of them, but all of them were good in there own way.also love the movie they made about them they picked out really good actors i always have to watch it when it comes on.love it.
I don't care how good they sounded, without Melvin, Otis and Paul, they aren't the Temptations. Former Tmptations, or Ex-Temptations maybe, but not The Temptations.
I half agree with you. They are not, by any means the temptations...at the time this was made, the Temptations were Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Melvin Franklin, Richard Street, and Ali Woodson.
These guys left the group called the temptations...so they cannot be that same group. However, As Otis and others say, Once a temptation, always a temptation...so they still get to have the title of being Temptations...but they aren't THE temptations.
They are individually all Temptations...but the three of them cannot make up the group the temptations. those guys all have or had what it took, and what it takes to be temptations..and they are legends. But to call whatever group they start after leaving the temps The Temptations...is not fair the group that continued without them. thats my only point, not ragging on Ruffin Kendrick or Edwards, those guys are amazing, and legends.
I wouldn't say that David was 'by far' the best Temptation...I would say...(best lead singer for the group) but...who could sing a bass like Melvin? Who as smooth and could sing a falsetto like Eddie? Who had charisma like Paul and could sing his baritone, or choreograph like him? Who could keep it together like Otis? The true 'leader of the group. They needed each other in order to be "The Temptations" Many years ago They were dubbed as "The Classic 5" No other group like them ever.
I disagree somewhat on David being the best because his voice really was amazing, but you are absolutely right. The Temptations are arguably the greatest vocal group to ever walk the face of the Earth.
wow they all seem ageless, like they couldnt grow old, the originals im saying, hard to believe most of them are gone, R.I.P. David, Edie, Paul, Melvin
David had a VOICE on him!! The first temptations were awsome. With david, and eddie, and melvin, otis, and paul!!! WOW they were a super great team. I wish they could have stayed together!! Well everything happens for a reason i suppose!!
that dude couldv been on drugs, but I tell you what he could support it with that voice. Everybody got vices, I would never judge anyone cuz I never walked in their shoes.
You can find backup singers a dime a dozen!! But a voice like Davids, 1 In infinity!!! There no I in Team, But this is the acception to that worned out saying!!! Done!!!!
I read the article and it actually says crack cocaine. I read something different in another biography. However, I'll admit when I'm wrong. When did I become Mr. Dark? Are you being and ignorant racist again Mr. Poop? You stop that! You're better than that. Or are you? Did you know many "white" entertainers died from drug overdoses too? Maybe you should go on their pages and taint their memory by bashing them because of their addictions. It's only fair. Must be only fun if they're black. Hmmmm
Love the soul of his voice!

Not to be a jerk, but it also reached out and gave him cocaine
TheBigBarros 1 year ago

2:09-2:11 David cracks. too funny
Lionel4482 1 year ago
what ae you talking about
MrYoungro2 1 year ago

The greats gone too soon!
tommiexander 1 year ago
i think they sounded better in the sixties and seventies. in the eighties and nineties they sound like a shell of their former selves.

Diana
dianeanddavidruffin 1 year ago
Aftrward he did. he binged (used a shitload of drugs because he hadnt had any for the longest time) a typical addicts behavior and sadly he died of an overdoes
kaliedoscopesharinga 1 year ago

I do remember the first time that I went to see them live,at the Westbury musice fair in 1966.They were so fantist
ringo244 1 year ago
I don't care how good they sounded, without Melvin, Otis and Paul, they aren't the Temptations. Former Tmptations, or Ex-Temptations maybe, but not The Temptations.
coopm12 1 year ago

But to call whatever group they start after leaving the temps The Temptations...is not fair the group that continued without them. thats my only point, not ragging on Ruffin Kendrick or Edwards, those guys are amazing, and legends.

daaamnn david!
shalesemaria23 2 years ago

Hmmmm
